Homeless = Bohemian. Now that is funny. Also, many schools have downtown near a campus, but don’t have homeless people across the street from the entrance gate to the campus. I love how some of the people on this board try to spin any possible negative said about UGA. UGA is a great school, but it has its issues. Let’s keep it real.
Yes, it’s true. I really like UGA and will see the bright side when I can.
But it’s also true that in any city of any size that I go to, warm or cold, I see a lot of homeless people. New York, Philly, Ann Arbor, and even Gainesville. It’s sad but it’s a fact of life in the US.
On a political note, I like the fact that Athens has shelters and a well established food kitchen to try to take care of its poorer people. That’s not a plug for UGA.
First thing my daughter said and continues to say about Gainesville “There’s a lot of homeless and bums here”. I’m not sure what UF you visited, but 1 foot off of campus is very dumpy at UF and Gainesville is not a nice place by any stretch. In the 80’s and 90’s it had a much nicer and “town feel” to it across the street from campus with restaurants and nice houses and a walkable area. Now that’s all gone and it’s not good. UF is a great school, but Gainesville is a dump and there’s very little in the way of nice or entertainment. The newer renovated downtown-ish area is okay, but not great.
I was waitlisted and while I got into Emory, U Miami, UF and a few other great schools UGA is still in my top 2 choices. Does anyone have any advice on whether or not a letter of continued interest would do any good at UGA? They are so adamant that they do not track interest and do not consider letters to counselors etc. Any insight would be appreciated.
I don’t think it would hurt but I would keep it very direct and to the point. don’t try to butter anyone up.
you said top 2 choices- did you get into the other one?
actually, I changed my mind:
- As stated on the FAQ, the Wait List does not have a “ranking” of students from 1-X number, and you do not need to send in a “continued interest” communication, as we assume anyone who replies to stay on the Wait List is still interested.
so I would not bother with any communication. just accept your wait list spot if you want it.
Unfortunately, I think you’re right. It doesn’t seem like there is anything I can do to affect the decision. Thank you for replying.
Waitlisted at UW Madison. That’s the other one. They did however ask for a LOCI
We paid the housing deposit just after OOS early action (December 16th). I know Brumby and Russell are two of the freshman dorms that go quickly. Does anyone know if they fill up before they get to the early action OOS students? Just curious if OOS students from previous years were able to select either Brumby or Russell when they got their housing appointment.
i don’t think in-state vs OOS has any bearing on this. our OOS daughter was admitted EA, paid her deposit a few days later, and got a room in Russell. the only dorm filled already was the new one, BDM.
Russell and Brumby are pretty similar. I actually like Brumby’s lobby better, but it’s a tad further up the hill walking back from classes or wherever.
I do believe this is the first year UGA had in state families able to pay the housing deposit ahead of OOS families. My son is a sophomore and I think everyone did it at the same time. He lived in Russell.
oh tht’s true- it was different this year, with instate EA decisons coming out in November and OOS EA decisions in December. I don’t know why UGA did it that way, but I guess that will affect housing registration, with fewer OOS students getting the earlier picks. this might change the makeup of the popular dorms, which til now prob had a high % of OOS kids. maybe not, but something to consider.
safest thing to do for an OOS kid would be to try to find an instate roommate who got in EA, for thaose early picks…
Is there a way to appeal merit for UGA? We are OOS, daughter admitted EA and to HC, but no mention of merit and I think the window to receive it is closed. So, is there a way to file an appeal based on new info since she applied months ago? Many schools offer an appeal process, but can’t find anything on UGA’s site about it. She also reached out to Admissions. I know it’s a longshot, but worth a try if it will be considered.
I don’t think they will give much more aid, especially to oos students. But defienently give it try. The worst they can say is no.
Agreed, but not sure how/where to appeal it? Other schools have specific processes to follow. Guessing I go to the head of Financial Aid or Head of Admissions, not sure who’s ultimately responsible to grant/offer merit at UGA.
I don’t know about the specific process either. I would just give admissions a call and they will point you in the right direction.
