DS25 deferred EA. OOS.

UGA is still his #1 and we are crossing our fingers they want a well-rounded student from Maine. 3.7UW, 4.1W, 7 AP’s, 4 year varsity athlete, leadership positions on campus, owns his own profitable business (and has for 5 years), solid essays and strong LOR’s. Still, UGA is tough to get into and we are well aware it is esp hard as OOS student. Still, saying our prayers!

OOS Daughter deferred as well. All 7 kids in her NJ high school were also deferred. It is nearly impossible to get into UGA as an OOS student. The stats parents posted on the EA board that received acceptance were absolutely insane. And it seemed like the majority all got the Honors College. Those stats reported seemed to me that UGA would be a safety school for them with no intent to go to UGA. But UGA, unlike many other universities, obviously does not care about yield protection. Purdue def did from reading that board and seeing the kids denied with very high stats. UGA claims to do a holistic review but it seems that the EA round went mainly to high stat kids. We are holding out hope as my daughter has excellent ECs that show motivation toward her career path and leadership. Her GPA is above range and her ACT on the lower cusp in range. Her essays were also very well written. We are counting on their claim that they will look more carefully into her app in this round. Good luck to your son!

anyone know if UGA has announced a firm RD decision date?

No, they have not. Dave on his Admissions Blog said he would post the date when he knew.

Yes, EA always goes to high stat kids both in and out of state. This is explained on the admissions blog. They have to be cautious with EA acceptances because they don’t know what their overall pool will look like.

From what I have read, EA, specially for these flagship state schools/ SEC, are more of a numbers admission. The RD is much more holistic, and UGA is known to be one of the most holistic approaching admissions during RD round. This seems to be panning out as truth as I’ve watched the rounds for EA and then RD release for several flagships this year. A lot of greatly qualified, well rounded kids were deferred almost unanimously in EA but more often than not, gained admittance in the regular round. My daughter is what I would consider well rounded, high achieving but not overly so. We strategically opted for RD at all schools because of this, as I had a feeling she’d be dealing with mostly deferrals in EA. This has worked for her; she’s been admitted to every RD school she’s applied to thus far, including Tennessee OOS, which I consider only slightly less competitive than UGA. Many of her friends went through the deferral process EA, and it seemed to cause unnecessary additional stress. I would think unless you’re truly set on a specific school, or your student is a statistical outlier, EA is not the most strategic route.

new blog post, seems to be preparing for a larger than usual waitlist. Good luck to everyone waiting for next Friday. I am hoping for an acceptance or denial. so many defers and waitlists already this year for my kid. It is #1 choice though

my OOS S25 applied and was accepted EA to engineering at Clemson and Tennessee, deferred for business at UGA. His brother had the exact same pattern applying biosciences (deferred then WL at UGA, attends Clemson). I definitely think UGA is more challenging to gain OOS acceptance across the board (whether EA or RD)- because of the larger population/pool of highly qualified in-state applicants drawn from the metro GA regions. I expect my S25 to be WL at UGA and would be surprised at an admission, in spite of EA acceptances at other regional schools. Hope I’m wrong. We won’t know if your theory holds true until your own UGA outcome (and even then, its a limited sample size).

Until a couple of years ago UGA did not consider residency as a factor in admissions. They always seemed to hover around 80% in state and 20% out of state which was their goal. As UGA has become more popular for out of state admits this was no longer working. They then decided that their target goal was a hard 80%/20% in state out of state breakdown, and to accomplish this residency became a factor. Now in the second year (or third?) of this program, it is demonstrably more difficult to get in out of state. For EA this year in state acceptance rate was 42% and out-of-state acceptance rate was 23%.

Any new portal astrology from anyone? Any new changes to note in people’s portals?

The ability to withdraw was disabled on Monday but I think that’s for everyone.

Good luck to everyone
