Question for Graves on UGA Admission Blog:

Thank you for providing a lot of data. An applicant can look at the standardized test scores, # of AP/IB/DE classes, UGA GPA, sports participation, jobs, volunteer activities, etc. and get a sense of whether they will be admitted. They can also pay attention to their grade trend and understand if the classes, jobs, etc line up with their intended major. The wildcard is the “holistic” review. After all those pieces of data and submitted essays, and absent an interview I’m not sure what goes into the holistic process.

What I find interesting is the big discrepancy in number of females admitted vs. males. According to the Common Data Sets, it is always 60% or greater females admitted. Since the yield rate of males and females is close, the enrolled freshman class is always 60% or greater female. Why this is interesting is because of the importance of standardized tests. Given that the mid 50% SAT of EA admits is 1370 – 1500, it stands to reason that UGA is fishing from the Top 10% pond (according to College Board top 10% is around 1340-1350). But, also from College Board…57% of the top decile is male.

So, on average, if you pulled out 100 fish from that pond, 57 would be male and 43 female. But if all the female fish were kept, to get to a 60% female/male admit rate, around half of the male fish would need to be discarded (43 female, 28 male gets to a 60% female composition).

Is the holistic review biased (unintentionally) to females?

Finally, if the state legislature thought it important to mandate 80% of the freshman class be from in-state should we expect to see a similar mandate that strikes to achieve greater gender parity?

Taking the bait . Aren’t more female fish applying? 2024-2025 CDS had 17,600 male fish and 24,800 female fish applying. Perhaps some of those female fish may land in that 10%. It is not a 50/50 pool.

My son missed the fellows nov 1 deadline due to so much going on. Anyone know stats for admits on this ? Hoping he don’t really miss much if his stats are too low !!

D26 was in state admit . Of her classmates currently the top 5% academically is overwhelmingly female.

They were all admitted.

Males had more deferrals (and a handful of admits as well). Per D, the “girls all show better leadership” as well.

So perhaps this is a real life example of what you are saying.

I believe that Honors College acceptance precedes the fellows application consideration. Given the overall stats of admitted students, this is a pretty selective group. Likely 1500/35+ on test scores with top rigor and grades such as IB Diploma.

He can still apply honors I believe until January. He would miss the fellowship but have access to other scholarships and opportunities only available to honors students.

I would expect those that get this to be Ivy like admits. Even at UTK (where stats are lower) the students that make it into the premier scholarship cohort are often choosing between that and Ivies. So that is the type of student I think gets this.

So everyone with good stats should go ahead and shoot their shot (my dd did as an OOS applicant) but it’s like buying a lottery ticket in my opinion. So I wouldn’t fret too much about missing it. Probably a long shot for almost everyone. But if your kid made it in I’m sure he is a great student!

UGA, unlike some other schools - most notably for in state people Georgia Tech - does not consider gender, race, or other demographic information in their decisions. He says this over and over on the blog and in the comments. Georgia Tech on the other hand does actively consider gender because their goal is to have more women admitted to the Institute and the acceptance rate for women is 1 ½ times the acceptance rate for men at Georgia Tech. It is demonstrably more difficult to get admitted to Georgia Tech as a male. Not true at UGA

My guess is this is purely a function of the applicant pool - more qualified females than males. This is in line with the entire country. More women go to college than men. Mr Graves also says they are much more interested in what you do over 4 years in a classroom vs a random Saturday standardized test. So not sure your standardized test info has any bearing .Most colleges weigh GPA higher and in the event a standardized test is much higher than the expected GPA it can actually be a negative.

100% correct. This is not an UGA problem, it’s a US education problem. UGA gets FAR more female applicants than males.

Thank you both for your feedback! My son is a 1450 sat so I think we were assuming he wouldn’t make it lol! Now just crossing fingers to get in OOS !!!

I’ll just sit over here with my dd who “only” has a 34 ACT and your 1450 kid whose “stats are too low” and think wowsers things have gone wild. Hahaha.

They may not make it in OOS but I just sometimes feel like I need to periodically remind myself and my dd that she is statistically a top student and holistically amazing  and college stuff is just weird.

Good luck to your son. I think UGA has dropped off my dd’s list as others have picked up momentum as of late but it is her reachiest application so interesting to see how it pans out.

I believe this is the first year they have split ea in state and ea oos. I wonder if we will see stats for the next round. But I have a tough time imagining a 1450 will disqualify any kid. Not guarantee admission either but a 1450 doesn’t put you in the deny pile.

1250 SAT and 4.0 W D26 just hoping for deferral and not denial here, haha. This was her ‘Well if I somehow get waitlisted and enough people decline enrollment’ school.

Should an OOS applicant with near perfect grades and test score (and high rigor for her high school) be prepared for a possible rejection tomorrow? I’m thinking it should be accept or defer, but I’m just not sure how competitive OOS admissions is for UGA and if there are perfect stats kids who still get rejected in EA. UGA is a top choice for my applicant so we’re excited but also nervous about results tomorrow.

UGA OOS admissions is competitive, but not crapshoot.

It’s one of the most transparent and communicative admissions offices based on our experience last year. Stats are the single most important factor and they don’t make random decisions under the guise of “holistic” process.

if your student has the UGA recalculated GPA and test scores within range of their typically admitted profile, they will get through. EA OOS is bit more challenging, and you can refer the stats posted on the admissions blog page from last year to see where your student places in that range.

Thank you. I’m hoping she at least gets a deferral. Her high school is very competitive and sends multiple students to Ivies & T10’s each year, but they don’t allow AP’s until junior year and then limit it to 3 that year, then 4 senior year. They do have very challenging honors courses, but those don’t count for the UGA recalculated GPA, so her UGA weighted GPA is at the low end of the range of EA admitted students last year. Her ACT is a 35 and she has straight A’s. UGA is not a popular choice from our high school, but my daughter fell in love with the campus when we visited. Hoping for good news! Good luck everyone!

With straight As, 35 ACT and all possible honors and APs that the school offers, I’m pretty certain that your kid will get through EA, and possibly honors college too.. worst case a deferral, but I’m 100% sure your kid will then be accepted in RD.

UGA is a great school and I’m not surprised your daughter loved it. All the best for results tomorrow.. please do post here.

I have a nervous OOS applicant! She got deferred at Clemson yesterday and felt like that indicates a likely deferral today. Already has good options, but seems like to UGA the most!

ACT 33 / Business / I don’t know her UGA-translated GPA but she has maxed out her AP/DE/AAC in the core courses at her school and has all As except 2 Bs. 4-yr athlete, leadership in one school club, involvement in several others, had a job the past two years.

Just hoping for the best! Good luck everyone!

My dd is waiting. 4.0 unweighted with all honors/AP/DE in core classes. 10 APs. 34 ACT. All the great ECs like all the other superstar kids.

Mine is in state at UTK and has lots of scholarship money and honors there so this doesn’t really matter today anyway. But pride.

Good luck! My daughter will hear from UTK on Monday. Such a fun time!!! This is my youngest and I will definitely miss this process as exciting and stressful as it is!
