Yes, it’s likely 8+ APs by end of junior year with all As in those APs and the core classes.
Yeah our school doesn’t allow APs until Junior year. So our core UGA GPA is 4.15 (I think). However my son had a 4.4 wgpa and is ranked in the top 1% of his class. So I don’t know what to think is about to happen…I guess it depends on if they really know these schools.
Thank you. But this is where I get a little confused (and it doesn’t really matter one way or another as UGA does the calculation).
It would seem odd to me that you get a GPA bump on all APs, but only core courses are included on the GPA calculation. Then, it gets a little fuzzy to me as to what they actually consider a core course to be. Clearly science, math, english, social studies, and foreign language are considered, so therefore AP Calc, APUSH, and AP Chem would get the boost. But AP Art? AP CS? This doesn’t affect D25, but I’ve always found it to be just a little confusing.
ALL AP and IB courses get the quality point bump, including AP Art, AP Music, AP CS. It’s very clear in the common app instructions and Graves confirms often on the blog.
But clearly the only way to really be in the “safe” zone is to have taken a TON of APs/IBs by Junior year which some schools don’t offer these classes until then. So, IDK…oh well, it is what it is.
Most schools send a school profile in with the transcript so they can see exactly this! Good luck!!
I thought AP CS is considered core… no?
I believe AP CSA is a core (foreign language) but I’m not sure that AP CS Principles is.
Accepted. 4.5 UGA GPA, 4.0 UW, 1530 SAT, 8 APs, 7 IBs, 2 DEs (GT Math 1554 and 2551), 6/553 class rank
On a side note, can I still apply for Morehead Honors College right now? Kinda bummed I didn’t get in but definitely reasonable seeing how UGA has been getting really competitive over the last few years…
Yes, you can.
What are the benefits of Honors? Registration priority mainly or are there other big perks?
Does UGA yield protect?
Why would a kid with 4.0 UW and 34 ACT and good EC would be deferred?
That’s correct…
A (4 pts) for each of the 16 core courses + 1 additional point for each of the 9 (AP+DE).
UGA does not give the extra quality point for DE. It’s only given for AP and IB.
Someone asked in the GPA blog about CS Principles and he said it was included.
The applicant’s competitiveness would depend largely on what courses/levels comprise this 4.0 UW, and what was available at the school. The UGA recalculated GPA is a huge factor, as well as rigor.
Mainly registration priority which I wouldn’t underestimate. Ability to live in Meyers dorm (although many decide to live in the Baxter St dorms). Some of the weed out type courses are supposed to be easier in honors. Bragging rights.
Negatives are you have to take a certain number of honors classes and they can be hard to get or fit in with your requirements. More than a few get in and then don’t complete the requirement to graduate from the honors college. This is different from graduating with honors which is open to all.
Yes, all APs are included in UGA GPA. Question above was about whether it’s considered a core foreign language like CSA.
Admitted: 4.0 UW, 4.15W (school only offers 8 AP’s total and DE not permitted). 1520 SAT, great leadership & volunteer activities. No honors auto admit.
In general, the Morehead Honors College is very well reputed. From friends and fellow peers who go there, priority registration is one of the best aspects. Getting to choose the better professors and not have to scramble to adjust your scheduling at the last minute is a big bonus.
I am also a big fan of the improved research opportunities the college offers with internships, grants, or funding in general. So, I guess, to a certain extent, the benefits for the honors college is dependent on the person. Also, some people will mention the additional honors classes but because they are honors, they are smaller and sometimes even easier.
