My son was accepted back in November, and was awarded $15,000/yr. He’s guaranteed admission to the School of Pharmacy for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program. 4.3w GPA, TO, good ECs. We are OOS.
It seems like test scores are no longer a major factor in awarding merit scholarships.
I have no idea. You should reach out to Pitt’s processors with any questions about your application. Here is the link : https://admissions.pitt.edu/processors/
But what are they considering? My daughter has maximum rigor with a 4.0 (weighed to 4.76) from a very competitive HS. Also ECs ranging from science research, to journalism, to performing arts.
@PAparents2020 probably the case. She did apply to 15 other schools, and would have considered Pitt with solid merit aid; but I guess they are not interested in attracting high stats kids.
It’s not just about test scores and ECs. Perhaps they think your daughter is more likely to go to MIT or CAL Tech with those scores. Maybe they weren’t convinced that Pitt was her real choice? They must know something. Also, there are fewer and fewer boys going to college–perhaps they needed to attract more boys and are offering larger merit to get more balance. There are probably lot of factors that go into it. Big universities like Pitt are looking to pull from all over the country and internationally. It’s really about fit and the university’s needs.
My son finally got the buttons tonight after several email this week prompting him to check his application status. Still nothing in snail mail, no email with merit, and no video. Pitt is his first choice, but we really are hoping for merit.
When you look on their website, they have regular merit which in the past has required a 33 ACT but I’m told it’s not a must have - just a reference point. Those are small.
Then they have the Cathedral of Learning Scholarship which is a diversity scholarship. The typical minimum ACT is 28 and that goes up to $15K. I wonder if that’s the $15K we are seeing which is a wonderful opportunity for those who achieve it.
I was hopeful schools would get more aggressive this year. Yes, it’s a business - but if Covid stays, people may attend community college and defer. After all, why pay all this money for our kids to be imprisoned in their dorm room.
I agree, I was hoping that schools would be aggressive with merit as well–ESPECIALLY after this year. One school offered my son $28,000, but the sticker price of the school is outrageous to begin with, and it’s too close to home to warrant paying a ton of money to stay on campus, and I don’t want him to commute. He needs to have a life after this year. He’s done so well, but we would love him to be out there in the world. Pitt is his first choice. Fordham is 2nd only because of the sticker price and we really doubt he’ll get enough.
Pitt has rolling admission and since you applied during the busiest time with majority of students applied and the Holidays, I guess it will take little more time.
