University of Pittsburgh Class of 2025 Official Discussion Thread

@WBct2003

We are basically a full pay family, and while it is true that she considered Pitt “a safety”, so to speak, based on previous information about merit, we were assuming she would get a larger amount. She is also National Merit SF (most likely will be named a Finalist next month), and has other options for merit scholarships at other colleges but was not interested in pursuing them. This is such a stressful process!

@ttb1263 Case Western keeps sending emails to my daughter for her to apply. In fact she just got one this morning, urging her to apply even though the deadline has passed!

My daughter was accepted early in December. She hasn’t received anything regarding merit. Does that mean she isn’t getting any?
3.96UW 4.26W OOS
She’s received merit from Miami of OH, Furman & Stetson so far

@RockyPA

Case is great school for Premed and Engineering. My daughter applied and was deferred :frowning:

She still wants to reapply via RD but personally, I prefer that she withdraws since even with great scholarship, we still have to pay around 35K-40K a year.

I know some folks got a message about merit, then info in the portal, but previous to that merit letters were arriving in mailboxes. Is that method still in use, or now solely via portal? Anyone still getting mailed merit notices? Thanks

My daughter received snail mail for acceptance, no mention of merit. She’s applied to a program where I would think have more male applicants (actuarial mathematics). She got an auto admit to the masters program.

My son keeps getting those and he was deferred from Pitt last month and has to submit mid-year grades. He wouldn’t get into Case Western in a million years. I do not know why they keep spamming him.

Alright I applied December 9, and I’m still waiting for my decision. It says “This Application is Complete”, it’s not that I’m like impatient crazily, but how long did it take you guys to hear back?

Applied November 11. Still waiting.

Does anyone know typically how long it takes to receive merit information after receiving your admission decision? My daughter received her decision mid-December but has not heard anything on financials yet.

It’s late now - but if you do it again - if you look where you likely work - the schools people go to vary. I mean, i works with folks with Masters managed by people who went to a non-pedigree school. So we all want the best for our kids - but if they go to a regional school like Youngstown State, instead of Pitt…they’ll still be fine.

My daughter’s top choice is a private school. Even with their max scholarship, Pitt is in the same range. But if money is an issue - there are definitely schools you want to apply to if the stats are good - such as Miami of Ohio or Alabama and Arizona which are insanely aggressive. Florida State (same rank as Pitt) is cheap even without a scholarship but if your stats are good you get one.

I hope we all get what we want…but that’s why we applied to so many. To have options financially. Even if you can afford the dream school, if another school ends up $100K less over four years, is the higher priced school worth it? That’s what we all have to determine.

Good luck.

Same here. I got the "buttons on Dec 7, still no word. I’m especially interested to know if people are still receiving merit letters via snail mail, as some were in December. If not, I could stop waiting at the mailbox! lol

Very true. I work at a company with a lot of brilliant people. (I went to BU, Middlebury, and an overseas school for grad work) My manager says he does not look at the school when he hires. He looks at previous work and internships. In fact–and this guy is an amazing manager and brilliant–he went to a regional university here in CT that people might see as 2nd rate. My mom and a niece went there as well and they have nothing but great things to say about it. I am praying that we get money from Pitt that will make it comparable in price to that regional university, but if not, that’s where my son will go. It is LITERALLY not the academics, but the skills they learn that will make them employable. It’s probably different for high level math and CS, but for everything else, it’s the job skills you learn.

My daughter was accepted last year similar stats to your daughter, OOS and got nothing! Needless to say, she does not attend Pitt. She waited patiently until mid-March before giving up. UD gave her a great scholarship and she loves it there!

Last year very few computer science majors received any merit. My high stats daughter received nothing. She went elsewhere.

@Topcat123 my daughter will most likely not attend either! Not sure why they even bothered with the $2000/year merit. She would have potentially considered it with substantial merit but I guess that is not going to happen. Good to hear your daughter is happy at UD!

Son likes Pitt one of his top choices but OOS and waiting on merit which I don’t think its going to happen. He is already moving on to other offers with substantial merit and still waiting on instate Florida schools FSU and UF

I know it’s a bit late in the game to start applying for class of 2025, but current juniors should here this, if you have any type of diversity hook, TALK ABOUT IT IN YOUR ESSAY!! I had a 3.8 weighted a got 15k, while my friend was high stats and got the full ride diversity scholarship

my daughter got her button on 12/3, email on 12/7 and merit on 1/15. When we asked in December the Admissions office said “Applications are reviewed periodically for merit scholarships starting in October and students who are awarded merit based scholarships will traditionally be notified by letter no later than the last week of February.” They also said this about the honors program " All student’s who met the December 1 Honors deadline will be notified of their decision via email and letter February 1. This cannot be viewed in the portal."

my daughter received a merit email on 1/15 - it is not visible anywhere that we can see on the portal.
