Thank you! My son is leaning towards Pitt and we will visit, the issue is that Ohio State doesn’t seem to be allowing visits right now. It’s hard site unseen! The pricing at Ohio is better, but I don’t know if it’s significantly better if my son falls in love with Pitt! We’re also waiting on Binghamton S0M and that would be much better price wise so who knows what will happen. Good luck to you!
My daughter and I did a trip - 11 schools in 4 days. It was great. You can tour on your own. They all have self guided tours. Or just walk around, talk to kids on campus, see how it feels.
My daughter did 6 schools this week. None were official tours. It’s not the best but it’s still pretty good and worth it.
And just think, you get to avoid the info sessions which frankly, are boring, and all the same. Pittsburgh to Columbus isn’t that far so you can get it done pretty easily.
Which scholarship was the $8500? I ask because I haven’t noticed any OOS merit aid that were not multiples of $5k.
you could still go to Columbus and walk the campus. That’s what we did. At a few schools, we reached out to department chairs, who were willing to meet outside and have a 15-20 min discussion about the program. We walked the OSU campus over the summer…very different experience than Pitt, which is more compact, but a really nice campus.
I’m guessing Fisher is huge. Pitt business probably has 1,200 undergrads. They also have a business honors program.
I got admitted to Applied Math in Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences (Out of state). They didn’t mention anything about Scholarships or last date to make a decision. I’m guessing it is May 1st?
i don’t think they are giving out anymore scholarships as the date has passed(i think) and if you want to enroll you have to submit a deposit by may 1st
To follow up to this post, my daughter got accepted to American University with a Presidential Scholarship and offered unsubsidized loan. As this was her reach school this is now a game changer and she will more than likely change her mind. It is closer to home, smaller school, better program. Pitt really disappointed. She really liked the school but it seems they didn’t really like her.
How much is the Pres Scholar? We got $15K…Dean’s Scholarship. Still puts the pricetag at close to $60K.
I’m not sure I’d say AU is better than Pitt. It’s not ranked as high. It depends on the discipline - likely anything governmental, maybe journalism…maybe - but that’s about it. Pitt is a very fine school.
Everyone gets offered the loan - that’s not just to you. Even rich people!!
I know many of us didn’t get merit - but this is well advertised by Pitt that few get and the scores of those who do are off the charts. So we could all hope but shouldn’t be disappointed. We won’t end up at either but Pitt is still the cheaper school for us.
She got $20K and plans to major in PoliSci and intern on the Hill. We live in MD.
AU is good, solid - but Pitt is solid in this arena too. Congrats on your decision. I get it- we all wanted merit. My daughter is in all 3 - AU, Pitt, UMD. Neither Pitt nor UMD gave aid. Also Poli Sci…well at AU the SIS school. I think AU wasn’t as generous as years past. Pitt and UMD are never generous.
My daughter got in to Pitt, MD, UMASS-Boston, Penn, and AU. She got Scholarships from both UMASS and AU. Her first choice was Pitt her reach school was AU. I really wanted her to go to MD being that it was my school. She felt it was way too big. She wants a smaller school. So, this works out for her.
You don’t mean Penn…you mean Penn State? Penn is Ivy - would be the stretch school.
Anyway, if she’s happy and you can afford it, I wish you luck.
Pitt is a really good school though. My daughter won’t even check it out because the $$ won’t work. But I hope it didn’t leave you with a bad taste. That’s budgets, etc. These are businesses. So I understand even if I don’t like. We added high merit schools just in case - South Carolina, Florida State, Alabama, etc.
Yes, excuse me, PennState.
We also live in MD and my daughter also applied to Pitt, UMD and a few public and private schools nearby. At the end, she may end up in UMD due to cost, location and what the school has to offer.
Anyone have thoughts on Pitt vs UVA?
Well. What about ? I mean UVA is elite. Pitt is solid. But what is your question in relation to ? What are you studying? What are your hot buttons etc ? What are your likes/dislikes etc
Major is biology. I guess my question is what would look better when he continues his studies? Does it matter since they are both good institutions?
If you continue to med school your mcat will matter. Pitt is strong medically speaking. However most would tell you reputation wise UVA is a better name as it’s elite.
They are two different schools. One big city. One small town.
I would look at what’s most important since you have to spend four years there- finance and then fit.
People always miss that fact. Do you feel a spark at either ? Is one less expensive.
There’s not a bad answer here
Thank you! My son does want an urban environment so we will have to think hard on this one.
