For pre med which of the 2 (UMD and Upitt) do you think is better. I know its about fit / money and all, but those things put aside. We are out of state and will visit soon.
My daughter would love Pitt but we won’t visit - no aid. It’s a bummer. Other than the cold part, it sounds perfect for her. Nothing will replicate you visiting and these two schools aren’t horribly far apart - you can probably do them one day after another.
That said, on the CC, I read nothing but great things about Pitt. But I read the same about FSU and not about UF, and yet my daughter preferred UF.
You have to go. Unless Pitt is cheaper, many will look at you cross eyed for choosing it over UVA. But that’s not a reason to choose a school. You have to spend four years there. And Pitt is exceptional, just not elite.
Is University of Pittsburgh allowing campus visits. We want to visit the campus before making a decision.
Yes, they’re sending an email with a unique code to accepted students and holding tours starting on April 1.
yes, they should have sent emails…going on an official visit next Friday!
Fit and finances would be a consideration. City vs lovely college town. Higher “rank” and prestige vs state flagship. D21 has the same choice, but Pitt is an in state option with merit for her. She is looking to major in global studies and language right now. D18 is at Pitt on premed track, Pitt has been great for her. Both very good schools, Pitt may have edge for research and hospital volunteer opportunities if pre med is the desired track. Good luck!
Two great choices! I’m a UVA alum, but I am also very high on Pitt. My oldest D’s high school sends a large contingent every year.
Med schools don’t seem to care much about “prestige” and care more about a high GPA/MCAT and work/volunteer experiences. Although both Pitt and UVA have affiliated med schools, it’s unclear to me that being an undergraduate helps in the admission to the affiliated med school.
One thing that always impressed me about Pitt is that it is consistently in the top 10 for NIH funded institutions every year - medical science research is quite high in the area, undergraduate research opportunities are easy to find.
My son also got some pretty decent scholarship money from Case Western. We are comparing Case and Pitt. Anyone have insight on Case. We do plan to visit but would be helpful if someone has experience either the school.
depends on major
For those of you accepted at UPitt, did you receive anything from them other than the letter of acceptance posted at Pitt Passport?
you should get an email with a video and you’ll get an official acceptance in the mail
Hmm, probably best to call them.
Also anybody here knowledgeable here about the pros and cons of the “premed program” at Pitt vs. Maryland. Heard nothing but good things about Pitt. Of course, it all depends on the student, and one can be successful anywhere but in terms of resources/guidance available. We will visit of course for the “fit” part.
My son accepted to UMD, Pitt and American also. We visited American and UMD this past weekend and he took American off his list right away because he said it was way too small. Proximity to DC seemed just as easy at UMD and he preferred that campus and overall vibe vs American. On paper, he was all ready to sign up for American and the visit changed it completely. This is worrisome- for us and probably many others- since it is so hard to visit all the schools on his list. We live in Pittsburgh and he is a die-hard Pitt guy, but may want to move away from home. I can answer any campus questions about Pitt if anyone has any. Best of luck to your daughter!
AU is my daughter’s top choice but with $15K off it’s about $57K COA.
We are in MD - but full pay - so it’s a bit less. We never made it to UMD - now I wish we had because it can be an AU substitute - but the monies are similar - I think UMD is like $53K.
Pitt - also know money - everyone raves about it though…
We will likely end up at Charleston - cheaper - but my daughter really wanted DC.
btw - American not very nice and they have a rat problem.
Case was in my daughters top 2. The biggest difference between Case and Pitt is size. Case is a much smaller school, and your student will likely get more attention/guidance/support. Lots of medical sciences research of course done here so undergrad research experiences are easy to find. The campus is gorgeous and a nice mix of green/urban. Downtown Cleveland is a few miles away.
Thank you. What did your daughter decide on?
My daughter received a nice acceptance package with stickers and a journal. She got in in December, so if you were accepted more recently, you will probably get it soon.
Northeastern
You have great choices really, congrats!
How is Biomedical Engineering at Pitt and what are the employment chances with a Pitt degree? Any advice will be helpful.
Biomedical at Pitt is top 25.
