University of South Carolina Early Action for Fall 2024

Fortunately we dropped the short lived UofSC, we’re Carolina or USC for those accepted. The earliest I anticipate notifications to be sent is 3pm this afternoon. Those previously notified beginning in early November were top 10% in their graduating class.

The policy change accepting the top 10% of all in state schools makes this process more challenging as it removes the weighted calculations previously applied to each school. The top 10% at a poorly preforming school could be top 40% at another school but now receive automatic acceptance.

Thanks for the insight. So does that mean that the Carolina calculated GPA is now much different? Previously, the state of SC promulgated the calculation of HS GPA for all in state and out of state high schools, which led to some ridiculous numbers (i.e. 4.8-5.0 GPA’s, etc.). Is it now more “normal” and in line with others?

He applied IU business as well and haven’t heard from any yet. It’s unnerving. He has a weighted GPA of 4.63 and got all A+ and 2 As this semester 4 AP this year. Lots of activities and works 20+ hours a week. School doesn’t rank. Wondering why nothing yet. Hope today yields some success

Previously in state schools were weighted based on their performance rankings. They still are to a lesser extent but now the top 10% of each school regardless of school performance ranking are accepted into Carolina.

Example I know kids last year that were top 40% at a top 5 in state school that were accepted with early admission and another that was top 10% at a low ranked school that was not accepted early. This year several kids I’ve coached at both high and low performing schools were accepted beginning early November. There is a finite number that ca be enrolled. It’s why you see growth at USC’s satellite campuses around the state.

The issue is a large influx of out of state applicants, mostly from the NE, SAT/ACT testing no longer required, now top 10% of students from instate schools receive an automatic acceptance regardless of school performance. We can’t build on and off campus fast enough. If you’ve seen downtown Cola you see the transformation.

It’s amazing how much has changed even in the last two years when my son went through this process. The amount of deferrals for very qualified and overachievers is unbelievable, especially for these larger state schools. Maybe there will be a shift back to smaller, liberal arts institutions over the next few years. My daughter attends a small, private high school with all the options of AP’s, etc. you could imagine. I believe 12 kids applied to Clemson early action this year and only 1 got accepted - the remainder got deferred and/or rejected. Insane.

I confirmed with admissions office that Honors College admissions & merit scholarship notifications will come on later date.

I’ll add this for the parents and applicants awaiting a decision. As an alum, a former player at the school, an in state resident whose family came to SC in 1701, the parent of a current junior at Carolina, I’m in the same boat as you. My $10,000+ yearly contributions get me diddly squat advantage. The next 6+ hours will be long to say the least.

My daughter is top 12% at a top 5 academic performing 5A in state school, plays 3 varsity sports including winning a state championship and I’m as anxious as you for those notifications to be sent.

Gotta love the long snappers!

I chose that name to be a little less conspicuous but I’ve handled long snapping in emergency situations before. Best part is you’re the first down the field on the punt

Anxiously awaits while acting calm and positive in front of my kids.

Did I hear that they released decisions last year at 3:54pm? I could not have made that up lol

Does USC offer merit with the acceptance letter or does that come later? Asking for a friend.

It will be late afternoon if they follow the process from last year, I doubt anything before 3

I’m out trying to distract myself. Very OOS and a girl with a gamecocks hoodie just walked by me. Maybe it’s a sign😬

Last year they announced oos merit with acceptance but someone mentioned above that they called and spoke directly to the admissions office and they indicated both the honors and merit this year will come out a little later.

My daughter is a Gamecock, already home on break….we will go crazy if my son gets in.
Realistically expecting a deferral though. It was less competitive for them 2 years ago!

Agree. I have a junior there as well. Not sure she’d get in if it was this year. But that said- she’s thriving and will graduate with honors. This is a kid who’s highest super score on the SAT was an 1100. She got good grades as she works hard. Goes to show you that a less then great SAT score doesn’t define who they will be as a college student.
All that said- we are from NJ and our gamecock was driving home early this morning. Last night at 10pm she called us hysterical as her car wouldn’t start. Kinda frustrating when they are so far and you can’t help them. I enjoy that my third decided on a school closer to home. It does all work out some how!

Safe travels for your daughter today. It really is hard being so far away.
My son went test optional (topped off under 1200 on the SAT) so who knows where that puts him. He’s been deferred at two schools but given $ at two others so he’s all over the place.
Only a few more hours to go!
