I have not heard back from Honors, but just submitted my housing application. My recommandation is that you put the Honors dorm as your first choice (even if you do not know about your decison yet) and follow it with your regular dorm choices. This is what an admissions rep told me to do, so it does not interfere with regular housing even if you do not end up getting into honors, and if you do get in you already have it down as a 1st choice.
We are already in Honors. Just not crazy committing to SC without merit $ or answers from all of her schools and FA. Guessing we lose both the enrollment and housing deposit if we opt to attend another school? Ie. Nonrefundable?
Correct - non-refundable. $200 for enrollment and $100 for housing deposit.
Daughter wants to take her chances and wait awhile to deposit for enrollment. Aside from the financial component, feels uncomfortable to commit knowing we could pull out depending on their final offer (and other schools financial offer). With our son, he applied to mid-size LACâs, so there was no rush for housing/deposit. Now I know why people in his year were stressing about early deposits (yet this year itâs even worse as FAFSA is late, which will delay financial aid decisions).
I heard that if you were enlisted in honors during the first wave, you are guaranteed housing in the honors dorm
Might want to check with an admissions rep but I have heard it is true
That would be great. I had thought I heard/read somewhere that SCHC didnât have to stress so much for housing as there was ample space in their community, but I donât have anything official saying she is guaranteed housing. I will reach out to admissions on this. Thanks!
I hear you on wanting to wait until financial aid comes out. We will not be putting an enrollment deposit down on more than one school because thatâs the contract everyone signs on the Common App, but we will not feel guilty about pulling enrollment at a school that follows these kinds of housing deposit formats as I feel the school sort of forces the hands of students or puts undue pressure on them. I have loved everything about SC except for this one little item and unfortunately, they play the game because other schools do as well(App State does too). We donât have any others to put a housing deposit down early on(UNC does low-stress equal priority and Clemson goes by app submission date). I wouldnât feel guilty about pulling an enrollment because the colleges create a situation where that may be more necessary than it should be. Every family is different and certainly, every financial situation is different($300 is nothing to cough at), but I would release any guilt from pulling an enrollment at a school that bases housing choice on an enrollment deposit date, thatâs why they have a deposit penalty. The one thing I would caution about after hearing from a parent last year who had to cancel enrollment further along in the process because her daughter got off a waitlist at her dream schoolâŠmake sure the Enrollment and The Housing Deposit are BOTH CANCELED with certainty or you could end up getting an unexpected bill. My two cents. Itâs my first kid going through this and just when you think the most stressful part is over, there are more stressful things to figure out. As somebodyâs username states, IsItMayYet?!
This might seem like a silly question but if a student was deferred to RD but applied to the HC by the deadline back in the fall, is there any chance they can still be accepted HC? She never received HC decision back when she was deferred, we assumed she would get a rejeciton letter back then.
Thatâs a good question. If your kiddo was asked to apply to the HC, I would imagine sheâll be accepted regular decision - itâs a little shocking she got deferred to begin with. I would maybe email your Admissions Counselor this exact question. She was asked to apply and was deferred in Early Action. Is her Honors Application still up for consideration in the regular decision round? The counselor may even forward your question along to the Honors committee which might prompt a look at your daughterâs file. Nothing to lose. If you do, Iâd do it ASAP as I think those decisions are coming out in the next few weeks. Good luck to your D!
My daughter has been accepted to the honors college but our thought was to hold off on paying the housing deposit and committing until the merit offers come out in Mid-March. Do you think USC would possibly offer more merit to a non-committed kid (than to one who has commited) to try to persuade them to choose USC?
Iâve been asking myself this same question since my D24 was accepted in December. At this point, we are waiting for merit info, but it does make me nervous about housing.
Do you happened to know if the in-state scholarship covers tuition increases for out-of-state students? That would be a great bonus.
I agree with you completely. Thereâs no reason for them to offer a strong merit scholarship if they already have you. Not sure USC operates this way, but like I aaid, we will wait a bit longer to commit until we see merit which I believe comes mid March
I wish I could remember more, but at the time she was down to her last 3 schools and I donât remember the specifics. She found out she got National Merit Finalist in February, so by that point she knew she was not Top Scholar, but she did get In-State Tuition + $6000 for National Merit (Provost scholarship). She ended up receiving the Alumni Scholarship, but I do not remember when she heard this. I know she did not accept her spot until after she knew about this scholarship. She applied for several other scholarships that were departmental, and she did not receive them. (We have since been told they are mostly upperclass students). She spoke to her admissions contact several times via email with questions, etc., but this did not impact her scholarship offer. She was stil narrowing between 2 schools in early April.
Regarding housing, she did not register until after she had made her decision (after she had her Alumni and Provost scholarship offers). She did an interview weekend at Charleston and became friends with another in state student who ended up selecting SC, so they decided to room together. The roommate had made her decision and registered for housing earlier, so this was the date they used to select a room. I am not sure how much of a challenge housing would have been otherwise, but for them it worked out beautifully and they loved the honors residence hall.
Hope this helps!
Good luck!
Good luck!
My OOS sonâs letter stated that it gave him in-state tuition (not just a flat discount from OOS) and an approximate value, as the in-state/OOS tuition may increase. Theyâve held in-state steady for several years, so I wouldnât be too surprised if they increased in-state tuition at some point in the next four years.
I think they have certain parameters and will award the money based on the exact stats. You will not lose out on the merit by accepting. However, I would not stress out re paying the housing deposit quickly. Your child will get housing. There are SOOOO many kids currently deferred that there will be a LOT of shuffling up to May 1st. There is plenty of time b/w mid March (when merit is published) and May 1st⊠good luck!
Ahh that makes sense. I guess we could hope that even if it doesnât hold steady, it might increase at a rate smaller than oos increase.
USC was my DDâs top choice IF she got into the HC. If she didnât it moved way down because she wanted a smaller college feel that the HC gave her. This is the only school that Iâm feeling nervous about housing but I am waiting for the HC final decisions that should come out in the next week or so. She has some other schools that sheâs competing for full rides but sheâs a little wary (specifically due to lack of diversity). I just wish we knew what the full FA package was going to be at all of her schools. As of right now, UNC-CH is the only truly affordable option (because weâre in-state) but sheâs not excited about it. My oldest is HS class '20 - so weâve gone through uncertainties with her due to COVID. At least we had the FA packages for her choices back then.
