So, my daughter’s admissions counselor from SC called me today and told me that while housing is assigned based on when you deposit (no priority for Dec invitees or housing guarantees). BUT, she told me as long as she commits by mid April, based on experience, there will be SCHC housing available as their numbers with respect to beds correlates with how many matriculate. She said not to worry, wait for the merit award and she should be fine to get HC housing.
My son is also deciding between UNC-CH and USCHC. He doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to decide. Sometimes, I think this is harder on us than them. Hang in there. It’s almost March. As for being too late for a priority dorm if they choose USC, I think it will all work out but of course am anxious as well. I would expect with FAFSA delayed, a lot of people will make their choices later than usual.
I would not stress re housing, unless she ONLY wanted HC housing.
I think as an OOS kid, coming from a small magnet high school, she’d really wants to be in HC housing. Makes a big school feel much smaller we think, so yes, for us it’s not the end of the world if she doesn’t get it, but it certainly will be a disincentive if she can’t live there (we toured it last week and liked it).
We are confirmed for the April 6th Admitted Student Day. Ideally we wanted to do one of the earlier days so our D24 would be able to narrow things down much sooner, but the other dates didn’t work for us as we are OOS. Does anyone have any idea what to expect? How many students do they typically have join?
Yes, it does.
We were there last week and it’s hard to estimate number of students as there was so much to see and do, nothing felt crowded. You will have an academic session catered to your child’s interest area and an opportunity to see dorms, go on a campus tour, take pics with Cocky, attend an activity fair and attend sessions on financial aid, housing and other topics. You can also self tour the fitness area. We were there from 830-330, also from OOS.
We were also there last weekend, in state. It was a great time. We had an HC reception on Friday evening. The dean and a panel of students held a QandA for about 30 minutes. Then we had time to talk with students in her specific college one on one. On Saturday there was an academic session for an hour and an HC session for an hour. We toured the HC dorm and ate lunch at Russel. The university gave out Bingo cards to help the students talk to other prospective students. Our daughter won one of the prize packs. Included lots of USC branded items- hat, backpack, shirt, cup, lanyard, $100 parking voucher. She was thrilled! It was a nice event.
Regarding tuition holding steady, be a little cautious about your tuition expectations. My understanding is that USC keeps tuition rates so low because the increase occurs on the fee side. We did not know this with our daughter and were shocked when we heard what the fees were. Each college has a different fee - nursing and engineering/computing are the highest I think. We just looked for my son who is intending to study computer science, and it was $1500/semester. There is also a fee for being in the honors college. It is really hard to find online, so I attached the link below. It looks like Business undergrad is listed as $696/semester and Honors is listed as $575/semester. As I remember for my daughter, by the time we added these 2 plus the expected technology fees etc, it was a little shy of $3000. This isn’t unreasonable with how comparatively inexpensive SC is, but it is important to know as you plan your budget. Maybe we were just ignorant of this and the rest of the incoming students knew, but it was shocking for us when we first discovered it.
*The lists have all the fees for travel, graduate studies, etc. Just look for the undergraduate fee somewhere on the list.
Thank you for this info–very good to know when budgeting and comparing net costs from school to school.
Definitely true on the fees, there are a lot and they seem to be pretty common at at least public universities. We budgeted for the Engineering school and honors. IMO, the honors fee is well worth the benefits if they deliver on what they promise.
Thank you for the info. This will be our first visit to the campus, and we are excited to spend so much time there so she can really get a feel for things. We are doing a tour for Clemson the day before, but it is pretty short. However, we are planning to hang around all day so she can also get a good sense for their campus. We have watched a ton of virtual tours, but it’s just not the same.
It sounds really great. April is a little late in the game to visit, but at least she should have all of her decisions in by then. It’s going to be a crazy month…
does anyone know when honors will come out this week?
Is anyone familiar with how roommate matching works? I thought they said it was available today but nothing looks changed on my D’s housing portal, and I don’t see links of any kind to roommate matching. It’s not a huge rush. Just curious how it works. This is our first college-bound kiddo.
I think it will be either Thursday or Friday. Last year, it was Friday 2/16.
did she check her USC email?
My daughter doesn’t have anything either
I’ll tell her to check. I just saw on another thread that someone had called housing and they said the email doesn’t go out until 5 today. Thanks!
My daughter just got the email from housing.
