1250 is a very good score. That was a huge score back in my day! One of my daughter’s best friends got in OOS to Georgia last year with a 1225. She was deferred and then got in regular admission.
That’s what I told her! That gives me some hope, although the bad thing is it won’t get auto merit at UTK
Wow, that’s awesome. S24 got deferred then denied from UGA (his only denial) with a 30 ACT which is the equivalent to SAT score of a 1370. Just shows one never knows and should always apply!
Absolutely! Where did your son end up?
It also tells me that it really does matter which major one applies to. Most of these universities like to say they don’t admit by major, but they really do. There is no way they can take all Stem and Business majors. They have to fill out their ranks with the other fields of study as well. I read an article a few months ago about UCLA acceptance rates. Their overall was something like 10%, but the admission rates for History and Anthropology majors was around 53%.
All these admission metrics are just a huge crapshoot, you never know WTH is going to happen.
I don’t know what it means for anything but my dd has about 100 kids in her graduating class and at least 25 of them got accepted to UTK (in state) already. So more than the top 10% and they weren’t all over a 24 ACT. So it is all odd. Obviously it is easier in state but they told all those kids how hard it was going to be and she only heard one kid say he was deferred.
My daughter got honors and they are doing something new this year with different fellows cohorts that involves funding for travel or research. My dd got Summit Fellows which looks to be the lowest tier. The other high achievers in her class didn’t apply because UTK is just their safety and they didn’t bother with the honors application. So she doesn’t know anyone else in honors yet or who else is in this fellows cohort. She is the only all AP kid in her class serious about UTK. So if anyone else knows anything about that…
While we’re all anxious waiting for results, I’m curious if in-state folks received anything in the mail for the acceptance. I feel like 2 years ago, one of the tells was looking at your informed delivery and seeing a package from knoxville on its way, lol. There was fun confetti and like a UT flag. Do they still do this?
He’s at Auburn. Was admitted to UTK, Bama, Maryland, Boulder, UKY, Ole Miss, NC State and South Carolina. Deferred then Denied from UGA. Political Science.
We haven’t gotten anything yet. My kid who graduated from UTK in May did get a package with the flag but that was five years ago now.
However, my informed delivery does show a package waiting to be picked up from the sender from “university mail services”. I can’t figure out where it is coming from though. Surely it is Knoxville but they are late if it is still in the mailroom!
They probably realized they needed to wait a few days after admission decisions to send it so as not to give anything away, teehee. Maybe you have some confetti coming your way.
Well that would at least give something to do to pass the time while waiting for everything!
I did appreciate that UTK did deliver the acceptance, automatic merit, and honors, all in one punch at the designated time. Even with other rolling admissions schools with automatic merit it hasn’t always been made “official” at acceptance and this is the first honors acceptance. So it was nice to have it all in one go and all in writing and official and more organized than some of the others (even less competitive schools) with the piecemeal rollout of stuff.
Nothing in our informed delivery and UTK is safety-ish (and kid was hounded relentlessly to apply for honors) so a little concerning…
This person is in-state and has already received their acceptance so OOS packages (if they send them) won’t go out until after OOS acceptances. No need to worry if it’s not in your informed delivery.
Oh, thanks for the clarification. ![]()
Correct! We are in state and still no package so don’t worry! Maybe it is even from some other school. lol. I haven’t seen anyone posting anything anywhere with UTK swag so I would not worry.
Anyone know of OOS admits getting merit scholarship if they don’t have the SAT number for the auto merit?
I came across this that explains the tiers. Sounds like a generous donor added money for new funded experiences in the honors program, pretty cool.
It’s definitely cool. My son was in Chancellors and there wasn’t anything like this so this is definitely an upgrade to the experience.
I have to admit though, my dd went from “yay I made honors” to “ugh I’m the lowest tier of honors” pretty quickly. Kinda of deflating. While part of me wants to scold her for being silly I get it. Everything is so competitive. She could have just felt good about being in honors for a couple more days.
She really was grateful to make honors. How quickly the bar gets raised and now feelings are hurt that she is the bottom tier of honors. It never ends.
But they have improved honors benefits overall. Both the new fellows program and now they give the small yearly scholarships for continuing. It is more than what it was. She had gotten more excited about another option but now she is talking more about UTK again. We will see how the next couple months shake out.
I get all of that especially when they finally get to the point of realizing the benefits of all of their hard work. Big feelings. Good luck to her in the coming months!!
Thank you. So many feelings. It’s a lot on these kids.
