University of Tennessee Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Yes, she did. It came via email and her portal a few weeks ago. Her recalculated UTK core GPA is showing at 4.5.

Ok thank you for letting me know!

My OOS son applied EA over a month ago and just now he went under the ā€œjust for youā€ and sees he can apply to the Cook Grand Scholars, but he never received any ā€œinviteā€ via email. We’re not sure what to make of this since he just happened to click on it and the due date is in 2 weeks to apply to it. Not even sure if it’s supposed to be showing up for him as his recalculated GPA for UTK is only 3.89 but he does have a 33 ACT. Any guidance or opinions on this please share!

If your kiddo is an engineering hopeful, from what I can tell, it’s a nice honors program geared specifically to engineering with similar perks to the general honors like registration perks and special housing but with requirements that would align more with an engineering degree. I think it depends on how willing he is to write another essay. Alot of essays can be reworked from something that was already submitted to another school or program so maybe he wouldn’t have to do too much work. Not sure the notification or lack there of matters. If it’s in his Just For You tab, they must think he’s qualified to apply for it. I briefly searched their website and can’t find admission requirements or stats. A 33ACT is a great score. Not sure any of this helps. I know my kid is petered out at this point and opted out of applying to something at another school for this reason so it’s kid and energy dependent on how much more effort they want to put forth. Good luck!!

Ok thanks for the feedback! He probably could recycle another essay. I don’t think that would be an issue. I think he may be concerned if it’s a lot more work while being an engineering major - however I was reading you can drop it. He has 2 more weeks so we’ll continue researching. Thanks!

The 24 ACT is going to be tough. We are in-state and things have definitely changed since they started the in-state auto admit. (It’s not hard to get accepted in-state vs OOS!) My kids are at a public high school outside of Nashville and over 100 kids from the graduating class last year are now attending UTK. It just made OOS more competitive. UGA will be tough as well. Has she considered Ole Miss or Alabama? WIshing her the best!

So tomorrow is the day in state. Dd should be all set with guaranteed admission and this shouldn’t be suspenseful but it will be good to make it official.

Congratulations!!!

Would love to hear stats from those who today is the big day (I understand OOS is different). Congrats again!

My dd has a UTK GPA of 4.57 and a 34 ACT. She applied to Herbert School of Ag.

She knew she had guaranteed acceptance but it was nice that the merit was as expected and the Chancellor’s Honors isn’t guaranteed so it is just nice to have it all in writing as it should be.

It’s quiet because if you are in state you pretty much know you are getting in if you have a 4.0 (can be weighted) and a 24 on the ACT. Over 100 (out of 400) students from my kid’s class last year went to Tennessee this Fall. Many did not have a 4.0, but still got in! The big thing that in state people are looking for is if they get into Honors - that is more competitive!

She’s in at Alabama, but it’s not high on her list. No interest in Ole Miss…. My daughters were born and raised in Nevada, but I grew up in NC and VA. My daughters love the NC, SC, eastern TN areas. Not a lot of options in Nevada- just UNLV and UNR. She has no real interest in either in state school and does not want to go to CA, OR, AZ, etc. I just hope she gets into one of Clemson, UTK, or UGA. Have my doubts, but remaining positive for her. I feel bad for her- she just clams up whenever someone talks about colleges. She’s already convinced herself she’s not smart enough to get in to these schools OOS because of her test scores.

FIngers crossed for your daughter! What are her test scores? My son is at Clemson - he absolutely loves it. Did she apply to any other schools in the TN/SC/NC area? I know it is stressful but it somehow works out in the long run!

I was going to ask the same- Appalachian State and East Carolina University come to mind and her ACT scores are within range for those schools. Best of luck to her. It is so hard for these kids to separate test scores from everything else. Makes me sad they equate intelligence with ACT/SAT scores.

My oldest daughter is a 2nd year at Clemson. Selfishly, I’d love youngest to end up there. Logistically, it would be easier on us traveling back and forth from Nevada to see them.

Didn’t apply to any of the smaller regional schools. She’s all in on the bigger schools.

It is sad that they relate these scores to intelligence. She’s dreading all of the early action releases. A lot of tears being shed. I keep telling her that most people will be deferred, so if it happens, it’s not over, but she’s not having it.

Clemson is a great place. Did you submit scores or go test optional? Having a sibling there might help! Especially if she is open to Bridge or summer start. My son picked Clemson over Florida like your oldest daughter. It felt like a better fit for him and I think he was right!

I love Clemson! Love the small town feel. I’m a VT grad, so Clemson really reminds me of Blacksburg- both great places.

She went test optional - had a 24 on ACT - so we are hoping that will help her out at Clemson. Also hoping that since her sister is at Clemson, they figure we will be an easy mark for more OOS money, lol.

Thanks! Yeah, it makes me sad that she thinks she’s not smart enough because of an ACT score. I mean it’s still in the 75th percentile. Everything is just ultra competitive these days. She’s all in on the big schools, not interested in the smaller schools.
