I am pretty sure it was. My daughter received a waitlist decision and that was one of the options in the decision letter.
Yes, VT benefitted hugely from the methodology change this past year, jumping from 87 to 47 if I recall. The privates were creamed (Tulane specifically, although quite a bit of whining from Vanderbilt and WF)
US News
Most state schools do this- give priority to and lower standards for instate. Although itâs gotten a lot harder to get in OOS, they also raised standards for instate students as well. I know quite a few instate kids that felt confident based on years past stats only to be rejected or deferred. If you were not in that auto admit pool, all bets were off.
Has anyone still not heard back from UTK nursing but got in for their second choice major during early action
I was curious as we are OOS but it seems like UTK will still end up with more OOS students that were in the freshmen class from 5 years ago. See chart that shows > 70% in state in 2019. That number was decreasing and the new legislation has stopped the trend.
there was a small uptick for instate from 2022-2023, but overall trend is lowering instate %. That drop seems to correspond with higher standards for instate students that Iâve seen. Time will tell how much of a bump we will see, but that 72.9% included many instate students that would not be auto admits today.
I totally agree, AppMama. For those of us on the waiting list, this chart shows how UTKâs yield has changed over the past 10 yrs. Who knows how the auto admits will affect it. My math says that despite having 7,000 more applicants, UTK admitted 3,000 less students. I have not seen any report on the number of applicants waitlisted.
Many schools, like UTK, allow early action without committing to it. My own daughter was accepted at UTK early (but likely will be turning it down even though I was hoping it be UTK!)
It is a big circular problem. The common app made it too easy to apply to many schools. This caused schools to get too many applications which caused them to be a bit random with who is accepted or denied. That makes it harder for students to predict where they will get admitted. That causes students to apply to even more schools, which makes the problem worse as the snowball gets bigger rolling down the hill.
This includes applying at very different schools. An application costs 50-100 bucks while going to visit may cost $1000. Students will see where they are admitted and what the money looks like then visit as needed.
I find this post, incredibly uninformed and shortsighted. Youâre inability to see someone elseâs perspective is really something you should perhaps give some thought to.
Just because it doesnât make sense to you does not mean someone else doesnât have a very specific reason for applying to those schools
especially at out of state flagship schools, acceptances shake out in strange ways these days. A school may have not been top of the list but may end up being exactly where a child goes
ahhhh got it. There is a difference between ED(early decision) which is binding and EA (early action). I think you meant EA and not ED.
A high stat student may have had no interest in going to a certain school. It may have been a âsafetyâ but then if they are rejected from other schools and get a bunch of money from this safety that may be where they go. I donât know who you are to judge that they applied in the first place
Does anyone know when UtK begins pulling off of the waitlist? I have heard a couple of different things?
Any school starts pulling off WL (or not) once they start to have a firm sense of enrollment commitments (though actual deposits). In MOST cases that wonât be until very close - or after - 5/1. Sorry not an answer directly related to UTK but waitlist isnât something like admission decisions where you can look at past years to see dates and how many, etc.
Agreed. I also think the FAFSA debacle will delay some familiesâ ability to decide so they may hold onto a UTK acceptance (b/c the min auto merit is definite versus some other options).
Our admission counselor said that last year they did not begin looking at waitlist until May. I also think the number of spots this year will be much higher and they need to look holistically again at everyone. Keeping fingers crossed for early May but cautious. We are going to tour UTK this month and then will decide if itâs still #1 for him or if he wants to move on.
As a parent whose S23 was WLâd at his (original) #1 - I would advise mentally moving on from any school youâre WLâd at. It can be a nice surprise if they get the call but holding out strong hope can be wasted emotion.
Best of luck!
Was the study abroad option given to everyone waitlisted, do you know?
Everyone waitlisted did not get the Verto Vols abroad option. I know of someone just offered the Pellissippi CC pathway.
I honestly couldnât believe I was seeing the username here of all places. Am embarrassed to admit I did a quick search just to make sure there wasnât some other kind of ____ truck I was unaware of, ha!
Very nice to know there are so many other good people out there dealing with this mess and like many have previously said on here, I truly believe the man upstairs has a plan for all these kids. So if youâre dealing with a lot of disappointment like my daughter did (and it was putting a big damper on her SR year which chapped me big-time), keep the faith, itâs going to work out great b/c youâve put in the work, there IS a perfect place for you and youâre going to have the time of your life while youâre there.
I am disappointed in Carolina, no doubt. Weâre at a massive & very competitive HS in Charlotte and of the students that were accepted there, they were plenty smart and had great grades, but not a lot of well-rounded kids like Iâm used to seeing. The difference in admission appeared to come down to GPA and SAT only as there were friends with 0.03 higher GPA than my daughter that were accepted with no sports, no significant ECs from same IB program. Whatever, at least my kid will get to watch some quality football the next 4 years. Iâll get over it as soon as my kiddo tells me sheâs living her best life at UT, which I know she will.
