University of Virginia Early Action/Early Decision Class of 2030 Official Thread

Search for an email from UVA asking you to set up your portal and see if you can still do it.

Daughter got in OOS. No financial aid help though, so kinda pricey.

Rejected, which was a sad surprise, expect at least a deferral. In-state, ACT 36, 14 APs (all 5s and 4s), 4.36 Weighted (school doesn’t count UW), very rigorous schedule, research, etc. Applied for Math major.

DS deferred for engineering. Instate. All A’s, except one B, 12 APs, took highest option available for all classes. Varsity starter all 4 years, good volunteer hours. Oh well, VT was his top choice anyways, which he got accepted to.

This is pretty surprising. Stats are so good! What is his highest math and how many years of foreign language?

Took Calc BC in Junior year. That was pretty much the top math at his school so took AP Statistics Senior year. Scheduling conflict Junior so didn’t take a foreign language that year, so with 8th grade, has 4 years of foreign langauges.

VT is a great school, especially for engineering. But I’m still hoping he gets into UVA during RD.

Would having 3 years of foreign language and not 4 be a negative?

I have heard that UVA will ding you if you don’t take a FL at least through junior year. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’ve seen qualified kids not get in who don’t have that. Dean J says she wants to see all 4 core classes all 4 years, plus foreign language. UVA has a language requirement to graduate from there and if you take too many years off in HS, you lose what you have learned and makes meeting that requirement harder. Both my daughters were accepted, both had AP German senior year.

On a side note, I think FL is important for a lot of top colleges. In Cornell’s application it specifically asks how many years you’ve taken.

Thank you

I think 3 years is still acceptable, I took 3 years of a FL until junior year at the regular level and was accepted. However, it’s holistic and those who took 4 years probably got a leg up in admissions.

does anybody know if being deferred applicant has better chance than RD applicants.

No, they are all part of the common pool. Theoretically, someone who applied ED might have a slight advantage if they are trying to calculate yield, but not an EA applicant (and probably not ED either).

Did you submit all the materials for FA for UVA on time? If so- click on the financial aid tab and it should show preliminary offer.

deferred OOS 1500 submitted, 4.0uw, 7 AP (all 5s so far), 4 DE. Good ECs.

Does anyone know when scholarship / honor awards decisions come out?

Same here. Boo!

I heard that too. My kid made some choices that he knew may not help him with certain colleges. He did a lot of volunteerism and cultural/social justice ECs and is a great athlete with a ton of leadership but didn’t want to do academic extracurriculars. Really nothing was connected with his major other than some doctor shadowing he did to see if he really wanted to pursue medicine. He took Spanish 4 junior year but didn’t want to take a language senior year so he didn’t. So, you make those decisions and the results fall where they may.
