DS Accepted Arts & Sciences (data science intended major). OOS; 4.0UW/4.7W GPA; 1500 SAT; 34 ACT; 13 APs; lots of DE classes; strong ECs w/ research and tutoring. We were amazed by the shockingly generous preliminary financial aid package given that we’re OOS. Does anyone know if it’s safe to assume the final fin aid package will be close to the preliminary number? Also wondering, like some other folks who asked - is there a chance we would hear at a later date about any merit scholarship or would that have been specified in the offer letter? Just trying to determine how affordable it would actually be for him to attend.
UVA does meet need for OOS students - so i’d hope the NPC would be accurate.
Good luck
Rejected A&S. Near top of class at at a competitive HS. 4.0/4.7, 34 ACT, max rigor/APs, good-to-great ECs and essays.
Accepted CAS, in state competitive school, 3.99 UW / 4.422 W, 1500 sat, 5s on all 5 APs taken (taking 5 this year), mainly music focused ECs
UVA does not award merit scholarships.
There are merit-based full scholarships to UVA awarded by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, but that is separate from the university admissions process, and it’s already underway.
DS accepted OOS to engineering UVA, 4UW, 1560 SAT, strong EC and essays, CA private school. Also accepted to engineering at UIUC, UMD, Purdue and deferred at UMich and GATech so far
OOS Accepted CAS
4.0 uw, 13 APs (mostly 5s so far) 1500 SAT, high rigor, not sure about weighting but thinking it is about a 4.6 due to all honors and AP.
DS25 OOS accepted for Biomedical Engineering.
1460 SAT, Class Rank 1 of 108, GPA 4.0, QPA 4.8, IB diploma, Penn State dual enrollment calculus, biology, chemistry 4.0, two sports, theater, max volunteer, summer job, etc. (humbled acceptance as so many have amazing kiddos that are rejected or deferred and that is just awful)
Feeling blessed b/c apply to two safeties PSU/Pitt as those are in state, but then apply to their respective honors colleges which are tough as with anything its a numbers game. Then apply to about 8 “hard targets” like UVA and other public ivies so to speak.
Pardon, as we don’t know much about UVA but now that accepted it is immediately seeming to be in top of list to evaluate. So my questions might seem silly but being OOS and not a school I’m familiar with any guidance to offer this parent doing background research for my DS25 is appreciated.
- Is UVA widely respected nationally? (pardon my ignorance, we’re from a different area, but the next questions might give insights)
- How is the Engineering program?
- How is the BIOMEDICAL engineering program?
- How successful is UVA as a pathway to get into Medical School?
My quick research since Friday evening… is that UVA might be an ideal school… a public ivy, well respected, big school but BME department smaller (?) so best of both worlds, and since getting into med school requires a bit of GPA management and so on… it seems one can if dedicated navigate and do well and that UVA has a decent track record to help pathway students to medical school as an option for a BME student.
If this is off topic, apologies… but I’ll accept any links or info before it might get bounced.
Hi my youngest was rejected this year Ea. We are out of state so figured it was a reach although she had a similar stats to your son. My oldest was accepted to uva undergrad and their med school but she chose different schools so never attended uva.I do believe attending uva undergrad (providing he does well in classes & MCAT may provide a slight advantage into their medical school but by no means a guarantee. I do have friends whose kids attended uva and loved it. They did the business/finance route and have received excellent job offers in NYC so the uva name is well recognized nationally. Congrats
In state deferral surprised us, but also didn’t. We know it’s a coin flip where we are from, but DC had success with other schools that are a harder admit as OOS. I assume DC will stay in the pool for RD, but will move forward like it’s out of the picture.
I think UVA is great for all your questions. It’s known as a top 5 public school.
As for great (but not seen as top 5), so are your in-state schools, even without Honors. At Pitt, you needn’t be in Honors to take classes.
If you did not get aid, it’s over $90k a year at UVA for engineering. Plus medical school.
Med school will not care which college you attend nor that you are in Honors.
Some ‘med school’ parents on this board warn against engineering as a med school aspirant as it can be a difficult major grade wise. And you need a great gpa.
If they don’t go to med school, the average salary is $71k in the major at UVA.
UVA is a great name to brag but as a return on investment in this case vs your Pa publics, it’s an absolute disaster in my opinion.
If you can afford the extra few hundred thousand plus and they want to attend, great.
But from an ROI POV, even without Honors at Pitt/Penn State, for this major and your goals, from a financial POV it would be a huge mistake.
Again…that’s my opinion.
Good luck.
Congratulations. My son is a first year at UVA and I can assure you that the school offers a great education. It has excellent outcomes and high name recognition. That being said, first semester was a tough adjustment for S24 (we are OOS) but he is much happier now that he has met some friends. Good luck to your son as he makes his decision. Seems like he has many great choices already.
Thanks for the great feedback. Yeah, we get the same message everywhere avoid BME or engineering on pre health… but, his older brother is doing just find at another “public ivy” in the south so not to spit up in the air… I will just say that’s the mindset we have so to speak to chase BME and if med school doesn’t work have a great backup.
Financials are not part of the equation which is why I didn’t necessarily ask that… because first and foremost just focusing on what is the best fit for his path… BME as PreHealth… and it seems like UVA… provided he likes the campus when we visit in a few weeks… will be his top choice… as he would likely decline both PA in state schools (also our gig is to go somewhere out of state to explore for 4 years… and then start making one’s way back home so to speak). … only thing that could unseed UVA at this point would be if he were to get into a top ten school like Duke or Hopkins… but those are both reach.
So you should maybe meet with the pre med advisory team.
I think for pre med and for biomedical engineering as a career - there is no advantage at UVA vs. Penn State or Pitt. It’s among the lowest paying engineering majors as the UVA stats show. And I don’t think many put UVA engineering on a pedestal. The overall school yes but engineering, not really. In fact, and perhaps how they report the data is different, but Penn State shows a $77K biomedical salary in 2022, so higher than UVA.
But if you choose to send your kids there (UVA) - and it doesn’t strangle you financially and it sounds like it won’t - then no issue at all.
Wishing them a wonderful experience there, the PA schools, or the others you await.
Best of luck.
Good Luck to all the RD Applicants. S25 has decided not to pursue the deferral and will focus on his other engineering admits.
Best of luck. I’m sure they’ll excel wherever they end up. That’s the beauty of engineering. Short of a few schools, it won’t really matter where.
Good idea on the advisory team.
Right wrong or indifferent… that’s the path we’re going down BME and premed.
Not focused on tuition so we can kind of move away from that as we’re only focused on the best fit… and salaries do not matter either at this point especially if going to med school.
PA schools are all but off the table unless the HC brings them back as an option in March… so presently strong lean towards UVA with only an acceptance from a big like Duke or JHU to shake something up… but those are needles in a hay stack at best!
Appreciate the insights!
So reading back (and looking on line), there doesn’t seem to be any information on what percentage were deferred. Do deferred students just move to the RD phase? My OOS son was deferred but he will continue with the process. UVA was his top choice but I think it might time to move on and possibly be surprised (although unlikely) around 4/1.
Certainly never hurts to stay in the hunt but you are right, emotionally smart to move on and rw visit if it comes through.
Yesterday someone guessed at the #s if you read upthread.
Thanks. There are updates on my chance me thread on the other options. your comments are appreciated.
