I think the deadline has already passed.
yh. You applied?
Big changes coming immediately to research universities, likely spilling over beyond:
Do your homework out-of-statersā¦
Do think this will mainly impact stem majors? Likely the university as a whole. Do you think it will drive up costs altogether? My daughter is admitted to business OOS and we are watching closely. Interestingly my junior is a high stats stem kid and currently applying to 15-ish competitive summer programs, many funded by the NIH and grants. I would think high school programs would be the first to go. Not sure if those will be immediately affected or not.
Imo, if these cuts stick, the impact will go way beyond STEM (āUWāMadisonās largest source of federal supportā), the 15% level was the current floor on these types of costs, which are individually negotiated by each university with NIH. Iāve read that the national average of negotiated cost coverage is around 30%, with some universities as high as 70%.
The main reason that I am considering the OOS price premium is that my childās career path requires a PhD, in a very competitive and seat-restricted field, the two main things that justify going OOS for us are primo research opportunities and recommendations from those researchers. She can get the equivalent coursework almost anywhere, and her GPA is up to her.
We are all nearing a decision point on what will be at least a 4-yr investment. The prudent thing is to identify your key assumptions, and relook at your cost:benefit analysis.
If this change sticks, the effects will not be limited to a particular field of study or university. I find it hard to believe that universities will say course/staff cuts and tuition increases are off-limits. Probably see dreaded across-the-board cuts, in many cases.
Thatās such a shame. I used to work in institutional research at Columbia in the faculty of arts and sciences. These cuts will be devastating. We live just outside of Boston and thereās a huge concern here. So many thoughts right now.
Impacts of this will go way beyond research universities - Again⦠If it sticks.
There have been news reports that one of the motivations behind this is directed specifically at Bostonā¦
I know. Itās sad. Iām going to refrain from unleashing my feelings right now. Letās hope it doesnāt stickā¦.
Youāll have until May 1 to decide college choice.
Wrt summer programs, these are cash cows for universities. I doubt they will cut them, but course cuts and price increases are low hanging fruit.
Sheās applying to stipend and selective only, no pay to play. Last year she did cardiovascular research locally, she was unpaid but it was free.
The pay to play will probably just become more expensiveā¦.
Corporate funding will have to play a bigger role. But corporations are really short-term oriented when it comes to research, so the funding will be more about how promising and close to commercialization the research is.
The current/previous research model is for universities to develop an idea, corps to finish taking it to market. So anything close to market will have better chance to remain fully funded.
Does anyone know if deferral decisions for UW always come out with RD announcements some time end of March? I read somewhere sometimes they can also just update students portal with a final decision? My kid has all the acceptances in but holding off to wait for UW as it was a first choice and of course the one that we got a deferred from. Just to keep life interesting I guess. Thanks for any insight. I did read last year they released on March 21st, just wondering if we still have more than a month of tortureā¦
The kid I know who was deferred last year heard with RD. Sorry you are still waiting, best of luck to your child.
If you want to put in the time/effort, you might check the ā23 & ā24 EA threads to see if anyone mentioned if their acceptance came b4 RD date.
Earlier, I quickly scanned ā24 and didnāt see any.
Thank you!!! I am ok since there are great options on the table but understand the need to wait for that āoneā to say yes or no. What a long process!
For those anxiously awaiting hearing back on your deferrals, maybe brace yourself for what we went thru last year: Son was deferred from EA, and then when he finally heard back, it was the dreaded WAITLISTED!! Long story short, he finally got his acceptance to UW on JULY 11 - on our drive home from orientation and registering for classes and getting his dorm and roommate assignments at his second choice school. So we had to undo all that, and he accepted what I believe was the very last spot at UW
He really wanted in!
Congrats
UWās rate is about 53% or fairly high. I donāt think this will stick. Maybe a small cut in the 5% range as a compromise. https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/11/politics/trump-administration-public-health-funding/index.html
Fingers crossed here.
Anyone OOS get a merit offer yet? My daughter got an email today with a loan offer, but no merit attached.
