UT Austin Class of 2021 Thread

ADMITTED!! Who else is in the class of 2021!!

Son was accepted to Mccombs! 18/847 rank, 1280 SAT, 29 ACT

Wow got in. Honestly was not expecting it.

OOS, unranked 87 GPA 28 ACT
Applied undecided to CNS

Either my essay / resume was 10/10 or they accidentally hit the accept button

One question: if I apply as undecided, will registering for different majors in CNS be more difficult?

DS got into CS. In-state, ACT 32 and 8% of the class. I’ve been mentally preparing my son that he has only 5% chance to get into Computer Science. He is lucky and UT is his first choice !!! Also got into UIUC, TAMU, UTD, Baylor and Trinity.

@TexasMom2017 - Sorry to hear about your DS. Wow. Based on what I am seeing from others (ACT2017, etc.), it appears that CS filled up with auto-admits.

Based on a conversation with a UT CS professor:
UTexas CNS is an open college, meaning: “If you get into UT, you can choose your major in CNS.” I am believing that there is a huge demand for CS this year and the class was filled with auto-admits. Years ago engineering got around this by adding math, etc. requirements.

DD is a senior and many of her friends received “Huh” rejections from UTexas today. All are above the reported average non-auto-admit SAT and ACT scores for UT.

@boilerhorn - please note that my son is not auto admit. In state non-auto admits compete for 15% of total seats.

@boilerhorn - What is the source of your information? I had not heard that.

@ACT2017 - sorry about that and hank you for the clarification. I thought the cutoff was 8% this year.

Congrats on your son’s admission!

I was merely speculating based on what the CS prof said and analyzing the limited data presented here. Eating some crow right now

We are hearing from DS’s classmates that a LOT of them who expected to be admitted, based on past admission patterns at UT, were CAP’d this year. Makes me wonder if they have changed their admission formula. These are kids who have lots of fantastic options elsewhere so it is a little discombobulating.

does anyone know the nursing acceptance rate (out of state)?

Senior here, from an extremely competitive public high school.
-Today I got to witness several of my friends being accepted into UT Honors programs, Dean Scholars, etc.
I also got to witness friends who have been dreaming of UT for 8 years get rejected; a friend who got CAPped but whose boyfriend got accepted; people screaming in joy in the hallways or breaking down in tears.

–This is a reminder, to anyone reading, to remain humble. Be there for your friends, your children, your family members, whoever they may be. Be there for them for when they need to vent or for when they need to celebrate.

—You guys can do whatever you want, but I strongly disagree with posting stats along with acceptances/rejections because those numbers create a social hierarchy. (“If she got accepted with a 28 ACT, how did I not get in?”)
-----(to seniors) You are so much more than your GPA, your teacher recommendations, your ACT/SAT scores. The path ahead, into the “real world”, will reveal to you that you can learn so much more from rejection than from simply achieving what you wanted to achieve. Rejection, and the inevitable pain that comes along with it, sucks. But it will build your character more than victory ever could.

I’m definitely thinking that UT Austin has shifted to a more holistic approach to admissions and that GPA/rank/SAT/ACT scores do not play as big of a factor as the college essays, resumés, and, with that said, speak and post carefully. Be wary of speculation and be mindful of others’ extenuating circumstances.

how many students does UT CAP? I heard that UT CAPs students that they would like to attend/join UT but they don’t have enough room in the school to offer them admission so they CAP them

@megxhan ouch, man. people here who post their stats just want future-attendees to know what the competition is like. in doing so, those applicants will know whether or not they need to work harder to get where they want. if you probably didnt know already, most public universities are stat-based. with tens of thousands of applications, these stats are what put people in the running (still not the only focus). while not the most important factor, it is still a big one.

Thanks again @beverlyg for your wise and kind words. We are going through the stages of grief and this is just going to take awhile. I’d even secured a space at one of the best private girls’ dorm at UT. So angry at UT that I can’t think straight. I’ve been a LH for 39 years so now am going through the process of eliminating what I thought were good memories. Hope we get to “acceptance” phase of grief soon, but it’s going to take awhile. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness. Greatly appreciated.

@gotodoit77 and @hssrdad1 I think we are all 3 in similar boats. Just overwhelmed with the bad news today. Such high achieving kiddos. It shouldn’t end like this. Best of luck to you both.

@adam31 sure, maybe posting your stats on CollegeConfidential could help prospectives size up competition and motivate others to work harder, but I would actually argue that in the long run what will serve you more than your stats at age 18 is an inner sense of resilience; a confidence that you can handle whatever twists and turns that life hands you. Sure its better to get into the school of your dreams, sure it may seem beneficial to learn about the competition, to land a great job, meet the perfect mate, etc. But in the real world there are rejection letters, scheming co-workers playing office politics, and divorces.

CAPd for biochemistry. In state, 8%, 1390 SAT, great ECs, I’m very surprised and disappointed. Will be attending TAMU next year and hopefully can transfer
