Congrats to your son! For every non-top 6%er who gets in, there are many multiple who don’t. Being outside top 6% makes it more than likely the student won’t get in even with stellar stats otherwise. See it happen every year. Some schools are batting close to 0% in getting non top 6%ers in with GCs telling families assume it’ll be a rejection.
Are there any high schools in Texas that don’t rank? How does that work? I have an OOS daughter at a small non-ranking high school that was admitted in December to McCombs. We heard OOS was hard, but sounds like may be worse in state.
I go to a non-ranking high school in TX. I think it’s beneficial to the majority of us (our school is small, but extremely competitive, so I personally am nowhere near top 6%), but it does suck because virtually no one at my school knows their decision.
My daughter’s high school does not rank. Their scholarships went through the roof, and more kids that weren’t in the top 10 percent got into A&M and Texas than ever before.
Congrats on your D!
wait how do we know decisions are coming out today?
they like to give out decisions during the week cause they are closed over the weekend and they said priority deadline applicants will hear by Feb 1
My daughter’s school (in Austin) doesn’t rank. They just started that this year. Her school district wanted to start a pilot program, and her school, which is super competitive, volunteered.
That said, even in her school, the top 6% know they are in the top.
Will regular decision hear before feb 1st or no?
no they will hear back by march 1
yes ! lot of good option. Good luck !
no. by march 1st (unless you are auto admit)
If they come out today, what time would it be?
probably 6 pm, could be 5 or 7 though
My son did CAP and is now a senior at UT Austin. It worked out well for him. He went to UTSA and then UT. He also transferred straight into ECO with almost a 4.0. He is very happy he chose CAP. I do know not all kids get offered CAP since some of his friends were rejected. He was ranked high (not auto) and had a good ACT. I’m not exactly sure how decisions are made in regards to receiving a CAP offer.
Don’t all TX high schools have to rank the top 10% or at least designate which are in the top 10%? Our public HS ranks only up to the top 10%. If your school doesn’t rank, do they still designate a valedictorian and salutatorian?
They do let students know whether top 10 or 6.
hire him a tutor. it will be a big investment, but it should be off. top 6% is hard. we’re talking all 93-95+ throughout advanced classes in high school. and from what your other son had, and still ended up 15%, it seems like high school is ultra competitive. i made the mistake of thinking my freshman year didn’t matter. please emphasize to him IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT year for rankings.
Our big, 6A high school in the Dallas area doesn’t release class rank until after the first semester of Sophomore year. After that it’s updated after each report card cycle. My S23 twins just got their class rank for the first time and one is at 6.1% and the other at 9%. There are 1103 students in their class. I’m fairly certain their rank will rise over the next year…S21 went from 26% to 17% by the end of Junior year and is at 16% right now.
I’m fairly certain both twins will
be auto admits to UT, but since we’re going to be massively chasing merit aid with these two, I don’t know if UT will be the best financially…now if they are able to secure their desired majors and get into one of the honors programs, we’d find a way to make it work.
If your school doesn’t rank , UT assigns their own rank ( by quartile) based on your schools profile . The thought is that it is more favorable toward applicants and that admissions increase once a district stops ranking outside top 10%
