Here’s the place to look up past grade and reviews of professors. Best way to do it is type in the course so like for an accounting course type in acc and then 311 if you’re looking for accounting 311. Then click spring 2021 if you want to see the syllabi for then. It’ll list everyone teaching it and then you can click on find in the list and it’ll show previous reviews and grade distribution for that professor. You can go back further etc or I think you can just type in the name of the professor you’re looking for.
Hi everyone, I’m debating on whether I want to live on or off campus - does anyone have any suggestions on what is better? My concern is also prices, but looking at Castilian it seems like it doesn’t cost much more than most on campus dorms, am I mistaken?
The negative with the off campus dorms is you can’t eat in the on campus dorms for dining. I mean you can, but you have to pay. My daughter lived in Callaway and the food was horrendous (same owner as Castilian) so I bought her $200 of Bevo Bucks. That worked out perfectly for her. Castilian is right across from campus so it’s not a big deal living “off” campus but I think it’s just the pricing for different dorms and meal plans and there’s no guarantee you would get some of the other dorms.
Oh wow. Thank you for the info. Is packing the lunch bumming or inconvenient rather than eating on campus during the day? I heard Dobie let’s you decline their meal plan for an on campus one, is that not a thing for Castilian and Callaway?
Wasn’t an option last year in Callaway. You can get a bagged lunch though but mine couldn’t stand the food and said it wasn’t fresh. I think they cut the food budget mainly because the dorm wasn’t full so they lost that revenue and cutting food was an easy place to cut expenses.
That $200 and her spending money covered her through the year so it worked out.
I remember we had looked at that as an option but mine wanted to be able to eat anywhere and didn’t care about the dining halls but more the little restaurants and such on campus like Starbucks, etc. Also, the Bevo Bucks if I recall can be used at some places on Guad. But it’s a great plan for those who want to eat that kind of meal. The lines in Jester when we’ve been there are also so long but maybe when it’s only kids it’s not so bad.
What are the popular places those living at Callaway/Castillian go to for food.
This must add up quickly…
Are Bevo Bucks equivalent to dollars? or is there a discount?
What are the other restuarants on campus other than Starbucks?
tY
Haha really personal preference. My D likes Torchy’s tacos and always wants to go there when we visit but it’s so cheap so not sure why she doesn’t take more advantage of us! Uchi is a popular sushi place, but can be expensive. There’s a new one now that she wants to go to in a few weeks when I go to help pack her up. Kerby Lane for breakfast/brunch.
Bevo Bucks are like dollars. Good also at some off campus places. I think she likes Einstein bagels too. She’s cheap because she is not on an unlimited budget like many others but does complain about “this meal, that meal, etc”. https://bevopay.utexas.edu/ She’s also a picky eater so isn’t going to fancy steak dinners or eating ribs or stuff like that. Sushi is her vice I guess. I have a list if I can find of restaurants she recently sent me to send to someone else. If I can find it I will send to you later.
Near the Castillian and Callaway, within easy walking distance, Left Wing (awesome Korean fried chicken), pizza press, ropollo’s pizza (spelling might be off), Cains, PTerry’s (great burgers and shakes VERY CHEAP), Chick-Fil-A, Dominoes, Zombie Taco, Chicken in a Cone, lots of Asian food places, Kins dining hall if they want to eat on campus and more…there are no shortage of places to WALK. Torchy’s isn’t a quick walk, but is doable. Kerbey Lane is YUMMY and known for their queso as well as the breakfast food.
I’m so confused about meal plans. What’s the cheapest meal plan for someone who is living in the dorms, but super independent but used to doing my own shopping and cooking?
My daughter got CAP’d at UT, so she’s not attending. We filled out the housing app when she applied and made a $75 deposit. Do we need to cancel the housing app? Or does it automatically cancel since she’s not attending?
They charge $75 for the housing app this year? Two years ago when my daughter applied it was only $50. I wonder which year they changed it. This year or last. I’m guessing this year since the dorms I don’t think are even 50% full. She didn’t apply to live on campus at all but I remember it was $50 and had no idea we should’ve even paid it when she applied. She would’ve been up a creek if she had wanted to live on campus.
@srparent15 you could probably answer this the best since you have kids in these two schools, best I’d appreciate as much input as possible from anyone. As an out of state student (I’m from California) for both UT Austin and Purdue, is there anything that would justify paying $17,000 more for UT Austin than Purdue? I really like/prefer the Austin environment, but are there differences in the Aerospace Engineering program or in general that I should consider? As long as there is something that makes UT worth more than Purdue then money isn’t a concern. Is there also something that would make a degree from Austin worth more in the future (like job opps or connections, etc)?
I don’t have anyone at Purdue so I can’t answer the Purdue part. My senior was accepted to Purdue but is headed to Michigan.
I’m not overly familiar with the Aerospace program at either school, however this is what I CAN tell you about Engineering at both schools…besides that they’re both phenomenal engineering programs…
Engineering at UT you are in the major from Day 1. If you don’t like it, it’s not that easy to change into a different Engineering major. If you decide you want to change into CS (which is in the school of CNS) it’s also not easy. It’s not hard to leave the Engineering school and major in something like math, but it is not easy to do a different Engineering major. My daughters have a friend who’s brother was an aerospace major there and wanted to change to CS but couldn’t. Ultimately he finished his major, and I think got a CS minor and then went and got a job at Google as a software engineer and is going nothing with his engineering degree. Lol
At Purdue the difference is you’re in FYE so you’re not in the actual Aerospace major. So you get a “taste” of all the majors. I love this idea, but what I recently learned is that there’s no guarantee you then will get into that major as you then still have to apply and not everyone gets into what they want and end up having to pick something else or transfer. CS there is also the hardest program to get into at Purdue (also not in their Engineering school) and over capacity for next year so unlikely anyone will be able to transfer into that program. So these are all things to take into serious consideration. My son also read something about many students who start at Purdue do not finish there or change majors. So look at the engineering graduation stats.
Lastly, it is not difficult to get residency at Texas. I don’t know your financial status but we sucked it up paying as OOS first year and it cost us almost as much as my kid going to an Ivy, but this year it has made up for that as tuition is just over 13k. She will also be getting her Masters at an in state rate staying a 5th year so can’t complain. It will wind up being a lot cheaper than our in state school UIUC.
Sorry if I couldn’t give you more info. The other thing is Austin is where it’s happening. Purdue is so blah. I wasn’t that thrilled with the idea of my son going there. I’m excited about Michigan. He had no interest in UT, but it would have made life a lot easier had he been.
