47% yield is awesome. Speaks to high quality and moderate cost for in state enrollment.

Michigan is 46%. Berkeley, UNC-Chapel Hill and UGA are all at 45%; UVA comes in at 40%.

My kids’ high school UT yield is ~58% with 70 enrolling out of 120 admitted.

Has anyone else every heard this… if an applicant is NOT auto-admit, UT Admissions does not even look at the 2nd major.

No idea. I hope it’s not the case.

According to unofficial UT Admissions blog that is correct unless you are an engineering major. “ Following many university-wide reforms related to four-year graduation rates, the admissions process aligned itself accordingly. Now, there is the important component of “fit” into your desired program. UT is only concerned about whether you fit into your first choice major and reviews your resume, essays, and academic record through this prism. They want students who are more likely to graduate on-time and less liable to change their minds when they arrive. Fairness aside, this is how it works.“

@atx888 yes. I heard they offered 1 or 2 non autos their 2nd major if it was in COLA, but nothing in other majors, and those people were very very very very rare. Most people who are not auto-admit get offered CAP/PACE/rejection

Now that I’ve had time to process it, it makes sense. There are only so many spots and they have soooo many auto-admits. Anything remaining has to be insignificant. Just shocked me when I heard the admissions person say it on the phone. Thanks for the response.

Mostly correct. Why mostly?

  1. Auto admits: Auto admits get in to UT. If they request a major that does not align with their stats, admissions will try to place in their 2nd choice major. If neither are matches with their stats, admissions will work with them to find them the best spot. My son’s roommate was his high school’s valedictorian. He did not get either major 1 or 2 of his prefs. But, UT helped him find a degree plan that encompassed his goals.
  2. Engineering: each type of engineering has its own admissions stats & criteria, as well as a cap on the # of spots. If an engineering applicant seeks admission in either of two areas of engineering (ranked 1 and 2), then if 1 is a no, admissions will consider 2.
  3. Plan II. If every kid seeking Plan II was kicked out of the process due to lack of room in Plan II, UT would miss out on some of the top kids in the USA. So, for those who do not get Plan II (which is a high brow, Uber-capable group), UT still considers them for their alternate major choice. In fact advisors advise kids applying to Plan II to put Plan II 2nd so their alternate major sits at 1st place.

There may be a few other finite exceptions. But, the general rule is: UT applicants get their 1st choice major or no offer of acceptance. 2nd major listed is not considered, as a general rule, except for those who fall within a narrow exception category. My source: A talk I attended at UT-Austin where the guest speaker was the Director of Admissions of UT-Austin.

Yes, this is true in most cases. At least this is what they told us on the tour

As a side note on Plan II- when we went to the info session for my son 19 they told us NOT to put Plan II as your first choice major, and that they were the only major who did not care of it was listed first. Both my sons were autos, put other majors as first choice and Plan II second (both admitted). So, perhaps they state this so strong applicants can still get in to UT even if they don’t make it into plan II and it does not deter the other majors from choosing them.

Hi! Has anyone heard back from LAH yet? I know it might not be for awhile though. I’m an auto admit who was accepted as an Econ major on 11/20 and applied to LAH on 11/6

I got into McCombs but still waiting on the honors program. I’ve seen a few people hear back but not many

We were both auto-admits, both 4.31 GPA Weighted and 4.0 GPA Unweighted. I got a 36 on ACT (34 Math, 36 English Reading Science) and 1550 on SAT (780 Math 770 EBWR). She got a 34 superscore ACT (30 Math, 35 English and Reading, 34 Science). Both involved in varsity volleyball, student council, robotics, etc.

And thank you so much!!

My son is UT23 LAH and he didn’t find out until February 17 (,I remember the exact date bc it was on his sister’s birthday and she felt a little upstaged ). I have heard other people day February is the norm to hear about honors.
