UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

I went to UT in the 90s and the Greek presence in West Campus is still pretty strong, and it’s just not her thing. Hoping for on-campus her freshman year, and then perhaps north campus/hyde park area after that.

Are there any areas you would suggest a young lady shouldn’t live? My daughter loves to run outdoors so I’d like the area to be safe. We’re from the East Coast and have never been to Austin so unsure. Thank you!

No worries! Yeah, hoping for Carothers or Andrews.

Most of the area around campus is relatively safe. Austin definitely has it’s fair share of crazy people and crime, but the area around campus is safer than other parts of ATX. Lots of UT girls live in West Campus (Callaway, Castillian, Hardin) or in North Campus (SRD, a few other small dorms). Those two areas and on campus are probably your best bet.

Thank you!

All cities come with dangers and the main thing is to teach her to be aware, head on a swivel and never walk alone at night. There are a couple of options to call for someone to walk her back to her dorm if she finds herself alone at night. For West Campus they have a program called West Campus Ambassadors, and there is another Safe Walk program on campus. There is also a UT parent Facebook group called Safehorns where they keep parents of current students apprised of safety issues and improvements.

Great, thank you. Yes, we live near NYC so are comfortable with being alert…but teenagers are never as aware as us parents…thanks again for the advice!

I would bet it comes out between 6-7 looking at historical data. Of course, with things going they way they are anything is possible. Other times people received their decisions was usually between 4-8 back in December.

Edit: reading up and seeing that it may come out at 5. interesting if this is true.

I agree. Any school that claimed to give a decision “by” a certain date kept true to it and delivered a decision upwards of a week before the promised date. UT Austin is the only school to deliver it on the date. I wish they would have just used the word “on” if this was gonna be the case.

In their defense, they didn’t know how many applications they would be getting and had no way of knowing when decisions would be ready back in the fall. I understand and am also frustrated with how convoluted UT’s admission process is in general, but I don’t think that’s the issue. I do think that once they have a good idea of how many applications they have received, they should set a date and stick to it to end all of the speculation, but they had no way of knowing that back in August.

I applied to physics and polymathic scholars. It would be a dream to get both! Anyone else apply to either?

Does anyone know if they have let anyone in to the nursing major bc that’s my #1 major and I’m scared I’m gonna get rejected or get another major

Does all housing at UT Austin have AC?

Well, literally you could die in summer Austin without AC. Last year, it went 100+F for a month or 2 in a row. No way they give a dorm room without AC

Yes, but certain dorms have individual thermostats in the rooms, so if that’s important to your child to be able to control their thermostat, then be looking for that feature when you read about each dorm.

Anything is better than Jester. Food at Jester got old after a few months.

Used to go to Double Dave’s and snuck out a bunch of Pepperoni Rolls for Sunday night.
