UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

For those accepted to McCombs, were you interviewed? Is interview a MUST step before admitted? Thank you.

Both acceptances and rejections are experienced as the deadline approaches. I know a CNS Biology major who got their notice exactly when UT said they would
towards the end of January, which is actually early for Priority date of Feb 1. If they did not apply Priority, UT has until March 1. So any day at all is up for grabs for anyone who applied to UT.

No, an interview is only needed for the Business Honors program.

Thank you!

One explanation why some high caliber applicants still did not get a decision is because UT is waiting to see who will be withdrawing their application because they got accepted ED by another school. These students have to enroll in ED school and must withdraw their applications in all other colleges. UT is protecting their yield (number of applicants accepted who actually enroll) by waiting. They do not want to send acceptances and then students do not enroll. Most EDs are out in the mid to end of December.

I know of 2 kids who were accepted into McCombs last Thursday and who also EDed into other colleges. I wonder if they have a deadline to withdraw their applications or decline their offers.

This is so helpful to know!!! I never realized that EDs had to decline before UT is required to announce
so this is actually super awesome news! UT says it does NOT practice yield protection, but this seems like an easy backdoor way to do it without it being an official practice.

I don’t believe that what she is saying is actually happening. She is speculating that is the case. It sounds like a great strategy and she may be accurate. As someone who works in this area, that is a lot of work (specifically for a large school). From my experience, schools have a strong idea based on past years of who is and who is not likely to attend, and they use that to help make decisions. Students who have been accepted under ED usually have to deposit immediately, but some schools allow until mid-January to confirm their enrollment. With FAFSA being later this year I know of some schools that will allow students out of ED decision for financial reasons after the FAFSA results are in. Some schools also have ED2, and those deadlines to submit are typically the first couple of weeks in January with a decision coming within a couple of weeks. All of this is to say holding back from releasing acceptances to see what ED students do is an interesting strategy, but it’s also complicated. I would be more than happy to be wrong and that the OP is accurate, as we too are waiting (not so) patiently.

Yes, exactly, I meant to say I was speculating that this may explain the delays. I do not know this is UT’s strategy or not. But this helps explain why some kids are still waiting. When I read this on one of the blogs, this made sense to me, so I wanted to share this with others who are still waiting and wondering. In terms of a deadline for withdrawing applications, I found this on Cornell’s site: “If admitted ED to Cornell, you must withdraw any applications filed at other colleges or universities and send notice of commitment and the enrollment deposit in January”. I am sure every college is different though and Cornell is just one example. Any other speculations why kids with very high stats are still waiting for their major at UT?

Here is what I found on the web: “Students who were accepted ED (Early Decision), must withdraw their applications to other colleges. The deadline for withdrawing applications is not fixed and varies from college to college. However, students are expected to withdraw their applications as soon as possible after receiving an acceptance letter from the ED college.”

Did everyone get the Happy holidays from the Longhorn family email?

Yes, I recived it. Does not mean anything admissions wise.

Absolutely nothing other than they have your correct email address.

And I guess
that they haven’t declined your application (yet- which is good) because otherwise, it would be in poor taste to send this email. IMO

We did not receive any email. What does that mean :frowning:

I don’t think so. It would not be poor taste. It was just a happy holidays message.

My son got it. I’m sure it’s just a lovely message to all or part of well-meaning marketing. : ) I like positivity any way I can get it!!!

They got over 60,000 applications. They don’t send emails to all 60K all at once. Just like they don’t send physical items in the mail to everyone all at once. They usually do them in batches.
