UVA Email to Applicants

Did anyone else receive an email from the admissions office? It’s entitled “U.Va. Believes There is No Place Like Home”. Is this just a standard mailing to all applicants?

Yea I got it, I dont know if its standard or whatever. I did find it a little creepy though, but maybe thats just me.

yeah… so i didnt get that email and im a little concerned thats a bad sign… but you said it was creepy… what did it say inside??? ( by the way im from VA… maybe its just an out of state thing? )

Well I dont really mean creepy, it just had this funny wizard of oz metaphor throughout it. It didn’t say anything important concerning current admissions, and I don’t think it was specifically geared toward people who had applied ED or anything. It was probably just a random email sent out by the admissions office.

Yeah I applied RD but submitted it like Nov 4.

could you paste the contents?

Phillip:

“There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place…”

The mythic resonance of Dorothy Gale’s words at the end of the Wizard of Oz underscores
the need for each of us to find a place to call home.

Whether it’s penguins in Antarctica or Dorothy in Oz, most of us need help in
getting home at some point in our lives. It may surprise you though that there
are quite a few folks at UVA who want to help you feel at home here. One of the
great things about our faculty and students is their willingness to reach out
to others, in the university, in the community, and in the world.

At Thanksgiving some of our faculty host students who cannot go home. Some international
students went home this past week with new friends to their first Thanksgiving
holiday and dinner. Find out more about the tradition http://cavalierdaily.student.virginia.edu/CVArticle.asp?ID=25314&pid=1372</a>
of giving to others during this time of year.

While Charlottesville is for us a magical place, we do not have anything resembling
Munchkin Land. On the other hand, on Halloween, a lot of little tots showed
up in costume to visit the students and faculty on the Lawn. This trick or treating
tradition http://cavalierdaily.student.virginia.edu/CVArticle.asp?ID=24979&pid=1358</a>
is one of the most favored by our community and hundreds come far from home to
go door to door in the safety of the Academcial Village.

And while we don’t offer entry into the Emerald City, we do offer students a
chance to study http://www.virginia.edu/januaryterm/studyabroadcourses.html</a>
intensively in the Emerald Isle of Ireland during our January Term. Or if Irish
literature isn’t quite what you had in mind, what about renaissance art in Italy,
or globalization in Nicaragua, or Islam as it flourished in Medieval Spain?

To many, the moment when the great and powerful Oz is revealed to be a simple
man behind the curtain is a revelation that they never forget. Well, the truth
is, some might argue that’s what an admission office is all about. Many people
approach our office with fear, but with hopes and dreams too. People think that
we hold the power when in reality it is the students who are in control. It
is the student who will eventually choose a place to call home. We cannot admit
everyone but there are schools that will support students and that will be a
great fit for everyone. We hope that you will not see us as intimidating gatekeepers
but as men and woman who want to help you in the best way we can. If you have
questions about the admission process we encourage you to ask us questions undergradadmission@virginia.edu.

Use your brain, your heart, your courage and you will indeed get home. We hope
that you will learn to call Charlottesville home. It’s true we can’t tell you
to follow the yellow brick road, but if you have been here you know that we do
have lots of red brick paths and we do hope you will follow them here. If you
haven’t been here you don’t need ruby slippers or a good witch to wave a wand.
Plan to come and we will help you find your way.

Some of you, those who will be accepted for early decision, will know your path.
For others it will happen all too soon. We wish you the best. Come build a tradition
with us and maybe sometime soon your home will be our home.

The Office of Undergraduate Admission
University of Virginia

i got that email too

i wonder if and why it was randomly sent

I received it as well.

Did anyone who hasnt applied yet or who applied in the last few weeks RD get this email?

Is it possible that you guys were just on the UVA email list? I mean, you’d think that they’d send this stuff to all applicants, but I just realized there’s a separate link for a mailing list on the undergrad admissions page.

Wow, it sounds like some sort of likely letter or something. The likely letter sent to RD applicants last year was a little bit more direct, though.

That would be pretty cool if it was a likely letter… guess I’ll know Thursday cause I applied ED. And I think Beth is right, it’s probably from some email list.

haha i think i am just trying to ease my fears

yea so am i =)… but i really dont think it’s anything to worry about. Good luck! Did you apply early or regular?

ED…and I say “fear” because I didn’t get the email, haha. But best of luck tomorrow/Thurs.

Yea I know I meant I’m trying to ease your fears too. Thanks for the luck, let me know how it goes!

FWIW, my son goes to an in state magnet school. He didn’t receive the email. He checked with his friends that applied ED, and they didn’t receive the email either. He was relieved. I hope it’s a good sign to those who received it, but not a bad sign if you didn’t!

I have not applied and I received the email.

ooh. bet it’s their email list then.
that is a relief for me.
