UVA Email to Applicants

Don’t stay home on Thursday. Don’t stay in bed. Go to school. Your life will not end if you don’t get into UVA. For what it’s worth, I was rejected by UVA 31 years ago. The reason - there were so many Baby Boom applicants that UVA used a computer to sort and select from among the qualified applicants. I was sad, but my life did not end. I ended up at a different school and was VERY, VERY happy. I also got a fabulous education. You will all go to college. The school you attend will be the one that is right for you. Also, whether the news is good, bad or indifferent for you tomorrow, remember that one of the most important things you need to learn in life is how to deal with disappointment. Soldier on. Put all that nervous energy into writing an essay for another college application.

That being said, my D applied ED to UVA. She got the OZ email. I don’t see any hidden meaning in the message. Her SAT scores are great (770M 740V 680W). Her grades are okay, but not great (3.6UW). She attends a public high school in No. Va. Her course load is all honors and AP. She is a legacy (Dad is a double Hoo) and she’s got a good non-athletic “hook”. She’s been told that she has a 50/50 chance of being admitted at UVA. She’s been admitted to another school already, so she knows that she will go to college. She’s decided not to check online. She’s going to wait for the letter in the mail. She’s applying to other schools. It’s an interesting mix of small and large; public and private. Sadly, my alma mater didn’t make the list. :-(

For what I can tell, everyone on this board has at least a 50/50 chance. You may get in, or you may get deferred, or a few of you may get rejected. There are 300K more HS seniors this year than there were 10 years ago. You may find like I did 31 years ago that there are simply too many Baby Boomlet applicants. (Blame your parents.) Finally, if you do get in, don’t lord it over the kids you don’t make it. You aren’t better than they are. Just consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
