UVA Women

This question is for anyone who is from the Charlottesville area or are familiar with the girls at UVA. Coming from South Florida, I’m used to a diverse looking population with a healthy mix of spanish, white, asian etc… To be honest, I’ve only spent 2 days in Virginia in my whole life and I’m about to attend UVA for at least the next four years. What I’m asking is what can be said of the girls at UVA? Attractive? intelligent? snobby? outgoing? diverse? Anyone can answer this question and I’m really interested in what people have to say. Thanks!

What can be said for the women at UVA is that there are roughly 10,000 of them. Now honestly - do you expect these 10,000 people to all share some charateristics? I can tell you very accurately what they’re like. On each of the characteristics you cited, a small number will be well above the national average. A somewhat larger number will be slightly above the national average. Most will be fairly close to the national average. A somewhat smaller number will be slightly below the national average. And a much smaller number will be well below the national average.

Thanks… I guess I’m asking a question more related to what’s the culture like in Virginia?

We’re awesome. Be excited.

Haha I am! Something I keep coming across is that UVA girls like to dress to impress. Are dresses and pearls really that common? I certainly didn’t see any one wearing a dress when I was looking at University of Miami and University of Florida lol.

It really depends…you have those who dress up on a regular basis, but you also have the more relaxed crowd (and ‘relaxed’ has several degrees of variation - pajamas/sweats to jeans/polo/fleece).

There is a good amount of cultural diversity at UVA, but geographically, most come from VA and a significant portion of that is from Northern VA/Metro DC.

Generally though, you are going to find that most of the women are definitely intelligent. Most people don’t get into UVA without having some kind of smarts ;)

We wear dresses because days like today, it was 90 degrees, and dresses are the comfiest, coolest option haha.

Girls range all over, from dresses galore to wearing jeans and tee 24/7 to athletic wear most of the time. Nerdy to balanced to airhead. Driven to “mommy and daddy are paying for me to gallivant” to just gettin by. Pilots to future doctors to artists.

It’s funny, the last time someone made reference to UVa students dressing up, [I</a> had just seen this video](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SS9Rng8zI4). I see college kids doing something cute and goofy…no pearls, no formal wear. :)

It’s videos like that one that make me so nostalgic for beautiful days on the Lawn… I’m coming back to visit this summer and I can’t wait to see how South Lawn is progressing.

I’m starting grad school in the Fall and it’s been sooo hard to not feel like I am somehow ‘cheating’ on UVA. :p

that video is so adorable, haha.

be amazed at the cultural diversity and the amazing girls at this school. you just have to look beyond the sorority houses.

That UVA clip would make me not want to ever attend there if I was looking for love --serious case of the uglies who have no class!

Ah, good to know you won’t be joining us.

It’s always smart to judge prospects for finding a soul mate at a school of 13,000 with a video created by 30 of them.

lol. Welll dean J just told you… ANyways, don’t judge a book by its cover…

@marlinfan,
the girls here do dress very well ( I live very close and my dad works on campus.) If you want to dress casual though, UVa apparel seems to be the norm. So buy yourself plenty of Cav sweatpants/shirts and Ts. I have NEVER seen pajamas on campus (maybe in the classes? or between dorms?) but never outside. Then there is the jean and t-shirt look that is very common. And the other most common would be your “prep” look (and not Abercrombie or AE mind you, J.Crew, Anthropologie, and perhaps, Gap).

This also changes between where you are. Rugby Rd. is pretty strictly the last one. The corner is so as well but with more of the others. The lawns, however, are a pretty balanced mixed of all three.

Oh, and one more thing, though the classes seem to be easily categorized, the attitudes here don’t. Girls here ARE very intelligent but nothing else can be generalized.

Anyways, it seems as if you have already made your decision. Congrats! Don’t sweat it and don’t try so hard to figure out the people. With a school so large, it’s impossible and it will only make you come in with preconceived notions. Come here and try it out! You’re bound to find your niche and fall in love with it.

Okay so I make a point of wearing pajamas to class, to the Corner, downtown, and anywhere else I might feel it necessary to go on a Friday. People in Brown College generally think it’s hilarious, but everywhere else I get strange looks. I think there should be more pajama wearing around grounds.
PS I am a girl

^ pajamas ftw.

Thanks for all the input! I generally wear some sort of khaki or cargo with a v-neck or t shirt, so I suppose I’ll fit in just fine. On a bit of a side note, what are the opportunities for sports involvement that aren’t Division I? I play tennis, lacrosse and soccer and would even look to join a water polo club. Are there tryouts to make the teams or are they just for fun and anyone who wants to join can?

There are club sports and intramurals, see [University of Virginia | Intramural-Recreational Sports](Intramural Sports | UVA Rec)

thanks… I’m sure this probably sounds like a dumb question, but how does the weather get during winter? This question is coming from a kid who has never seen snow. The leaves don’t really fall off the palm trees when it gets cold lol
