And wrt ED advantaging affluent students…not only because of awareness/good college counseling, but also the many families who can’t afford their calculated SAI who have to merit hunt and can’t do that with an ED app. And don’t even get me started on need blind…these schools might not know an individual applicant’s level of need, but they use many tools that make it clear which apps have need and which don’t.
Strong focus on entrepreneurship, academically rigorous, competitive culture, bucks the trend of higher female to male ratio in many colleges with 57% male.
I threw it out there as another Boston school. You said your daughter wants Econ and they have a concentration - but it is a business related school. Extremely well thought of and I know you’re looking to get your student a leg up career wise - and they place well, really well!!
Students at Babson can cross register to expand offerings - with top LAC Wellesley, Brandeis, Regis and Olin College of Engineering.
But it is a very focused school.
btw - it’s “cousin” I call it - similar but maybe not as entrepreneurial is Bentley - and Bentley also places very well - but is an easier admit. They cross register with Brandeis and Regis.
But again, it’s good learning for you but probably too narrowly focused for your student unless they’re 100% intended a business type disclpline.
Piggybacking on this - I am a Wellesley (BA) + Columbia (MA) grad and my supervisor is SUNY Genseo (no grad school), but guess what? They worked their way up and have more experience in the field. They are also a phenomenal, natural leader.
My kid too. I think many schools are reluctant to turn away good ED applicants for a whole host of reasons – they nay want them RD or off the WL when they see who the pool/yield is, they don’t want to discourage other applicants, etc. And yes, it makes it hard to figure out if ED2 is a good option or not.
I can tell you from personal experience it DOES happen. S23 ED1’d to a school (reach) that was a rejection. He EA’d to a school that deferred him and sent the typical "don’t miss out, switch your application to ED2. At this point we hadn’t even visited the school so weren’t going to do that so his app went to RD and ultimately was accepted. He’s starts his Sophomore year there in a couple of weeks.
Something similar for me. Rejected ED. One of my top choices (doesn’t offer EA, just ED1 and 2) asks all of their RD applicants if they want to convert to ED2. After my ED rejection, I thought I should ED2 somewhere, but I had not visited this school which would’ve been my ED2. We did not feel comfortable with a binding decision.
I was accepted RD and that is where I’m going after visiting.
The details are a little hazy (I don’t remember the exact wording) as it was 6 years ago, but my D19 EA’d to Tulane and they contacted her to ask if she wanted to improve her chances of an admit (not deferred - it was before decision day for them) by switching to ED2. She’d just gotten her ED1 admit so was about to withdraw her Tulane application anyway and in any case she had another school lined up to be ED2 if she’d been rejected, but I do wonder how many people that works for.
Kid decided not to do ED anywhere. Applied EA to flagships in the Southeast, got in. Sent RD applications to Vandy, Duke, and Wake. 34 ACT, 12APs, 3.95 UW GPA, good essay.
