FYI. The Hokie Focus email was just sent out. It went to my daughter’s email.
I was surprised that the Hokie Focus event was only a half day event. I wonder if useful to those who feel fully committed vs those who are still deciding… Also did not see any info for an honors college session at that event and feel like I saw someone mention attending a session about it. I did email the Honors college to ask.
I think at any school - getting there to validate matters.
If a mass event like this or regular tour or self tour - you need to ensure it’s the right school.
Obviously they want ot to be right for you as 3 of 4 will say thanks but no thanks.
Whether full or half or you already know it’s the right place - just get to that point however.
The full day ones definitely drag but no one has to do the entire thing.
Of course if there’s things the half day misses you can set it up 1:1.
I loved these. My kids both hated. After 2-3 hours, they were beat. And had an opinion.
Looking at my DD’s school admission results for VT over the last couple of years, 90%+ of the high achievers (3.9-4.0 GPA, 1500+ SAT) are offered admission. EXCEPT the very highest performing - those kids with combination of highest GPAs (top 5 or so in their class) and SATs (1580/1590) - are waitlisted at a 50% rate. So based on this one high school, VT does yield protect but only in limited cases. My DD is one of those cases. Volunteering wasn’t an issue with her application, she had about 300 volunteering hours during her HS years.
But again you didn’t see the entire app.
Truth is no one knows.
They say they don’t. I don’t think they’d say that if they did. But no one knows.
I think privates, not publics, play the yield game.
The publics that offer ED do to an extent.
My child has a friend with all APs and DEs, over a 4.6 weighted, sports, ECs… you name it… and they were rejected from VT last year. She will readily admit she half-a$$ed her VT essay because she was more focused on getting into UVA. So she blames her lack of compelling application when it could have been yield protection. It really could have been either.
Does Naviance pull the scattergram information regarding acceptance/deny/waitlist from student input or from what the school has on record?
Students have to update it themselves so it’s not always up to date.
Actually that to me looks like it’s not yield protection at all. Most of the high stats kids on that chart got in, at least as far as I can see. (Unless I’m not understanding?). Not all high stats kid will get in because there are other factors in picking a class. Getting rejected or waitlisted for other reasons as a high stats kid doesn’t signal yield protection. It just means stats aren’t the only factor at play. True yield protection would look very different — we would see the number of rejections go up significantly with stats increases. High stats kids would be rejected more than their lower stat peers.
We just completed it. My son did most of the work but I think you have to sign up for a vt.edu email and create a PID with the student ID they sent in your acceptance letter.
We did that a few hours ago but still could not get into housing contract. I suspect we have to wait for it. The email is now working.
I feel like it’s literally like playing rock paper scissors when it comes to acceptance at some colleges. I don’t know what GPA is considered an average student nowadays (my assumption is 3.8-4.0 from what I’m seeing across all the boards), with that assumption my kid is less than average and she was accepted. Part of it is definitely because we are OOS….$$$$. She also had very strong ECs and recommendations, strong essays, captain of sport, leadership curriculum, and PT job since she was a freshman. But I will say that they put a TON of emphasis on their essay questions…from the amount of times it was mentioned during one of our visits, it almost seemed like it was their #1 in the decision making process. I would definitely emphasize the essay questions to any future applicant.
Yeah he set up the email and PID Sunday evening and lost access to the portal for a bit. Was a little scary. Then login started working again tonight and he was able to start the work the housing contract.
I agree with both of these points. I believe VT is looking for well-rounded students who have a heart for service. VT even sponsors a huge community service day where students sign up for clean-up projects in the neighborhoods and surrounding Blacksburg community.
I think the short essays allow them to weed out those who just have a long list of volunteer work to pad their applications versus those who really put their heart & soul into a handful of endeavors.
Also, as a parent observer, I’ve never seen a more active alumni than the Hokies. They LOVE that place! They show up for game weekends and fill that stadium, no matter what the record is. They show up en masse for the Remembrance Weekend every year…I think admissions is looking for students who they think will also fall in love with VT and become active alumni.
Created login and was able to sign housing contract right away yesterday. Go to the StarRez portal
Yep - he finished last night. We did have a delay while the system processed the change to his vt email. He had no access until then.
Assuming you all knew which dorm to choose already. Can you change it at anytime?
We just started the housing contract. We signed it, but did not finish yet with doing the whole “what do you want in a roommate” section. It’s the actual signing of the contract that puts you in the cue, right? So it’s okay if you finish the entire process later?
Ok. Good. Cause we don’t know what dorm we want but we wanted to get the contract signed. So I went to the terms and conditions to get it signed.
