@JaKr … very funny laughing at comment glad only have to go through process once!!!
We have three kiddos… and mentally (and literally) I can only tackle it one application cycle at a time.
HOWEVER, we have learned along the way not sure it helps in the end… on logistical items like when dates open up to start applying, heck this website for release dates… but also since we’ve gone through it twice, our now 8th grader, we’re able to “help” a bit to not only be in volunteering for 400 hours in a leadership role… but to do a smidge more, like progress into the leadership role for the heart association and write for a grant for $10K, and so on… to make the essay / accomplishment slightly better. BUT, the sad thing, no 13 year old is truly going to say hey, I know how to fill out a grant form for a 4103c non profit and so on… that just doesn’t happen without a parent. So yes, he will have learned and done something… you know, it required an adult who has gone this process THREE PAINFUL TIMES!
Wondering if those of you that received Merit could give a general idea of the typical range that is coming out. I think I saw one for $7500. We are OOS but don’t qualify for any financial aid so trying to decide if it is even a small possibility that it will fall within our budget. My understanding is that VT does not give a lot of merit aid in quantity or $. Thanks.
On their 23-24 CDS it says that 889 freshman were awarded non-need based scholarships or grants in an average amount of $3282.99. They are not known to be generous.
Hmm okay so when you go on the application portal what does it say the status of your application is? Mine says “recived” for both the application and the SRARs. F28 trying to go back to school.
Also i noticed a lot of people worried about FASFA deadline, i never saw a deadline for that, only for the SRAR. (Correction F27 (about to be 27, game myself a whole year on my last reply lol)
What questions do you have or issues you need to discuss? I think financial aid is the one area where it is fine and probably preferable for the parent to initiate the conversation. I have found that financial aid offices are more than willing to speak with parents.
Ours OOS got $3,000 which seems typical. We were disappointed but at the end of day Tech is costing us about $7k more than her other colleges that gave merit since their tuition was so high and they inflated their merit. We want to be where our kid is happy. She will just have to work some to pay her debts unfortunately.
