I have applied to Philip Exeter Academy as an international student. Now it’s my time for the interview. But due to time zone and location It is difficult for me to attend a virtual interview. Should I choose the recording or the virtual interview option? Does submitting a recorded video reduce my chances of admission?
It will be far less work for you to do the virtual interview if there is any way you can make that happen. There will be a more organic give and take. If it is impossible, then do the recorded one. It’s better than no interview, and if it’s all you can do, there’s no point trying to figure out if you should do a virtual interview - because you can’t.
Actually, I have scheduled a virtual interview on 30 January, but I want to cancel it because we live in a joint family and there is no room free at night for the interview.
Are you worried about your housemates or about how it will impact the interview?
I’m worried about how it will impact the interview and also as an international student, I can’t speak English fluently like a native English speaker which is why I am facing a lot of problems because this is my first experience applying to an international school. I’m coming from a domestic school.
If you don’t speak English fluently, a pre-recorded interview might make that less apparent.
Otoh, an interviewer might appreciate the environment you are coming from more if they can see it. If you started the interview by showing them your space, saying it was the most private in your home, they would understand. Wearing earbuds/earphones will help screen out background noise for you, which can help.
It’s really up to you how you think you can best present yourself.
Thank you, it helped me a little. I think a pre recorded interview is better, but I’m still worried about whether they value it as much as a live virtual interview.
A live interview is better, but only from the quality of it. As you mentioned, your English isn’t fluent, so a live interview would probably not go as well as a pre-recorded one
