Our town put on their website “Do not bring your pets to the city’s 4th of July Fireworks” or something like that. Duh.
I fully agree that the dog reaction to fireworks is real and needs to be taking seriously, but this is funny!

Okay if that doesn’t work because the CC censor asterisked it, search “Nation’s Dogs Vow to Keep Their” and The Onion, and that should find it for you.
Now if there could be fireworks that don’t cause particulate matter and smoke for folks and critters who have sensitive lungs and that wouldn’t start fires we’d be much better off.
I spent last evening in the laundry room with the washer and dryer going so my dog could not hear the fireworks. All was fine until 2:00 am and 3:30 am when some idiots decided to light off more.
So I think I said our younger dog isn’t bothered by them at all but… I let her outside at around 10ish last night and she had just gotten to the end of the deck when there a VERY loud BOOOM. She turned around and ran back inside like “NOPE NOPE NOPE!”
Luckily we got her to go out about 10 minutes later without a problem. She heard more booms last night (while she was inside) and still wasn’t at all bothered.
My younger dog has never liked loud noises or fireworks. While he isn’t terrified, he paces around, and at times will bark. As we were going with my parents to see the fireworks on Sunday, I didn’t want to leave him home alone, so took him with us; I knew we could go back inside if he reacted. While he barked at the first few, because he could actually see the fireworks, he was fine. I think in the past, because all he knew was the noise, he felt threatened. By seeing the actually fireworks, he knew where the noise was coming from and wasn’t afraid. This was not a gigantic display, but still loud.
While I would suggest taking your dogs to a display, it worked with mine and I was surprised.
Please remember that dogs hearing is WAY more sensitive than ours. Even if they’re not frightened of the noise, it can still harm them. It can cause ear ringing and permanent hearing loss for them.
Both my dogs couldn’t care less. In fact, I’ve never had a dog get freaked out by fireworks.
^That’s great and fortunate. Not sure if you mean it to mean that the fact that so many do isn’t really a thing. I’d like to think that’s not why you said that.
Well, we had hot dogs and grapefruit margaritas on D1’s front porch. Sweet.
We used to time Maine to include the Thomaston parade: veterans, old fire trucks from every little surrounding burb, kazoos, even a Ladies in Purple Hats group.
Three cities’ fireworks shows for the pice of one walk to the park.
The only issue is my neck hurts from trying to watch them all at the same time.
It is 11:30, and someone is still blowing up their stashes! Come on, folks!!!
Illegal in Hawaii so nice and quiet. We plan to see Wonder Woman again. The shower was lovely and bride delightedly surprised.
S arrives in 3 days and D has been here for 2 days! We are
:x
Had a wonderful time at friend’s backyard bbq with friends, food, drinks, and dessert fun. Got to help light up some sparklers to add to the festivities.
There was much more street fireworks in the NYC area this year than in previous years. And they were far more open and continued to set them off well after midnight.
Seems like past campaigns to stamp out this practice has gone by the wayside in a big way this year. Especially considering some of those street fireworks were being set off well within the vicinity of several local police precincts to the point it almost seems like the ones setting them off were daring the authorities to enforce the street fireworks ban.
@garland, no that’s not what I meant. I know some dogs have that issue. I’ve just been lucky.
We could hear the big fireworks show in Albany and then those in the neighborhood being set off until after midnight too.
@cobrat, probably more because they are legal in some NY counties so people don’t have to go to PA. They can just go to Rockland County and buy them now.
I got to watch fireworks from my balcony.
Here some tribes sell fireworks year round. Some even sell illegal firecrackers that are super dangerous. Many cities ban personal fireworks, but that does not deter folks from driving to tribal lands and loading up. If the town next door has 1 1/2 full time cops, who is going to bust the folks setting off illegal fireworks? Sigh.
Unless the legalization on the sale of fireworks in Rockland County was enacted only within the last year, it makes no sense as the NYPD used to be much more strict about enforcing the ban on street fireworks.
The comparison between street fireworks this year vs last year in the same areas is like night and day.
It’s only been legal for less then 2 years in RC and sales are very limited to dates they can be sold. Perhaps most people didn’t even know last year. I only found out 2 weeks ago they can be sold in my county. As more and more people learn it’s legal in some counties more people will go there and bring back fireworks to places they aren’t legal.
After a few employees of a disposal company died after transporting seized fireworks, there has been a sharp decline in use of fireworks in our state. I believe their deaths also helped in getting legislation passed restricting fireworks throughout the state and requiring permits issued by fire dept.
