Where are you applying for film school?

I think they must just be releasing it with Regular Decision later today

What do people think of Syracuse and Emerson? My kid applied to both RD but we are in CA and didn’t visit. Doing more research lately and they seem like great options; curious to know why people chose (or didn’t) these schools.

Emerson is a school kids need to visit because it is a few tall buildings and very rabbit warren like. My kids did not like that. My kids also felt second majors and minors were more limited.

Syracuse has a very traditional campus with green quads and clean and comfortable and updated buildings. Film and business buildings are both amazing.

As far as film both are excellent options.

My student is in at FSU for film production. I don’t know if all decisions are out yet. They called her and one other student from her section on the 18th so far.

Thank you! Not sure what his odds are of getting accepted, but sounds like we should visit if he gets in.

Congratulations! FSU sounds like a great program! Is it her first choice?

She has some decisions to make - and only half of the schools have announced so far.

NYU ED2 today if anyone applied for film.

Mine did not apply ED anywhere.

Neither did mine. CSULB just announced decisions.

Big congrats! My daughter just got an email that she was waitlisted. She’s doing alright but I think she’s just very concerned for the future as she is on two waitlists for her 2nd and 3rd dream schools. It’s going to be a couple of long months until we hear back… She was luckily given the opportunity by Emerson to be flown out and attend class and dorms overnight for 3 days. Kiddo isn’t too excited about it but I hope she finds it to be more fun than she thinks.

She may find the energy of Emerson students to be a soothing balm. That is a really good group of kids and she may find some new besties.

S25 got his acceptance to CSULB and the University of Hawaii. He had actually forgotten about CSULB so the announcement today was a nice surprise. He’s at 100% acceptance rate, which is cool but it was a pretty limited list.

He’s going to visit LMU one more time and ASU this weekend. He knows LMU is a financial longshot, but he seems to have his heart set on it.

We have visited both and live less than a hour from Emerson, and about four hours from Syracuse, where my son spent two weeks at a pre college program. I know graduates of both and people who have worked at Emerson.

Both are awesome academically. Both are outstanding, and very easy to distinguish from each other. Here is my opinion (obviously it is different for everyone)

Emerson is the way to go IF your student is inspired by cities and people everywhere and is interested in making film specifically. It is more narrow in focus and attracts communicators and artists looking to make media. They make a lot of it. Although the school is narrow in scope, there are lots of colleges in downtown Boston, so they may meet students at other schools in the area. The alumni network is fierce. The study abroad options focus on Paris, but there may be others.

Syracuse is the way to go IF your student wants to be a part of a campus community - sports, Greek life, etc. It is in a small city. Syracuse film is situated in fine arts, but has relationships with their famed broadcasting school. There are tons of options for classes in all subjects, and students can choose which classes to take (including history, biology, etc.). It is a more broad based liberal arts education. The study abroad focus for film is Prague.

My take is that Syracuse is more of an arts philiosophy (what do you want to say?) and Emerson is more of a creativity philosophy (how can you say something new, orig8nal, or in a new way?).

Others may disagree - this is just my take. I’m a communication professor so I like to look at mission statement, general Ed classes, etc. You may find a different experience. Just my personal opinion.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! It’s extremely helpful. I personally would prefer Emerson over Syracuse because it’s in a city and is easier to get to. My son is a city kid but also wants a “regular college experience” and is drawn to Syracuse for that reason. He also doesn’t want to go to an “art school,” which is what Emerson seems like.

I really want him to go to DePaul or Ithaca but he’s been pretty lukewarm, hoping he’ll come around. We toured DePaul and I personally loved it and Chicago. If I can convince him to go for one of the accepted students days, it might change his mind?! Right now, I think he’s focused on what his peers think and unless you’re from Chicago or applying to film schools, people haven’t heard of DePaul or Ithaca and that’s influencing him more than what the schools actually offer.

At any rate, glad to know Syracuse and Emerson are solid options if he gets in. Thanks for your response!

Daughter got an interview at UNCSA! A glimmer of hope in these stressful times, we are very pleased.

I have two children and both applied for filmmaking. The oldest is now at NYU Tisch for film and tv and the youngest still waiting for decisions.

Neither applied to UNCSA but both know film kids who did. I had no idea UNCSA required interviews. Interesting!

We have had few schools offer, request or require interviews. I only know of two other major film programs that require it.

I’m a Nor Cali mom too and my D is a junior at DePaul (not in film). Every year our HS sends 1-3 kids to DePaul it seems like. Regarding whether DePaul is “known” on the west coast, when I wear my DePaul gear around town, I often receive comments from people who know DePaul! I would say many West Coasters are not familiar with Emerson though…

But if your kid is not feeling it, that’s okay. There are lots of great schools out there!

Thanks, that’s good to know! I honestly don’t think his bad attitude had anything to do with DePaul. He had just spent a couple weeks in NY at a camp and had the time of his life, then was “forced” to hang with his boring parents at a school tour; life is so hard. How does your junior like DePaul?

She loves it! She wanted to be in a big city with seasons and she got it! She’s made great friends and has enjoyed most of her classes. She’s hoping to stay in Chicago after graduation but I told her she needs to get a job to make that happen!

LMU Regular Decision just came out! My daughter is starting to get annoyed because she is on her third official waitlist. Lots of waiting ahead. She did love Emerson though, but it’s disappointing she has to wait so long for other schools.
