I havent heard back Syracuse, does this mean Im rejected…I dont understand how they are sending out accetpances and rejections…?

brucieinwny, you’ll find those group of kids that aren’t into partying if you put yourself out there.90% of securing your niche is based on you.

courtkid1012 and nyjets21, no one but the admission committee knows how and why decisions are sent out in their manner. But I received my acceptance by the 2nd wave in 2008. Hope that helps.

Would you say that Syracuse is diverse? I come from a small, independent, WHITE school, and I would really like a change for college. I am aware that there are lots of rich, white kids at Syracuse, but…

I guess what I’m asking is if there are opportunities to meet people of different ethnic and economic backgrounds. Or does everyone prefer to stay within their bubble?

I read online that Syracuse has two campuses. Are students housed on the “other” campus, and if so, do you have a choice or are you just randomly assigned?

Also, I just wanted to know your general opinion about SU. I’ve been dreaming about Syracuse for the past two years and I am accepted, but I don’t know if I made it out to be more than it actually is. I am really interested in the sciences and I have visited the campus twice and talked to the bio professor. Both times I visited, I had “the feeling” and could picture myself there, but I’m getting nervous about making a decision. Is there anything you dislike about SU? Would you choose it again?

Thanks!!!

Joeldor - regarding post #17

My family just visited SU for my daughter, who’s interested in Civil Engineering. We had an informational session and tour with an engineering admissions officer. He shared information regarding stats of the incoming 2015 class. Details -
14000 undergrads (includes all years)
1400 engineering
400 freshman incoming to engineering
90 civil engineers for freshman class

We met the Chair of Civil & Environmental Engineering (Chris Johnson), and had a 1/2 hour one on one with Prof Sam Clemence. Nice people - learned a lot.

House, what are the steps regarding housing. My daughter got a $20k grant from SU, is that include room and meal? Oh well, tomorrow is a meet and greet for all the accepted students here in Puerto Rico so I am making a big list for them to answer, but if you can give me a hint about the housing process.

I got one for you House of London:

What’s the easiest science to take for a Whitman/Newhouse dual trying to knock out the science requirement?

lyssarhenry,

It’s not as diverse as I would like it to be but you are bound to meet people from all walks of life. Diversity obviously means different things for different people so you may be looking for a certain student body in which you may or may not find at SU. For me, I was not exposed to or made friends with students from Saudi Arabia and Poland before coming to SU but having enrolled exposed me to some friends and acquaintances from both backgrounds. I would say the student body still lacks in racial and ethnic interaction.

steelersfansam,

That other campus is known as “South campus,” which are for sophomores and up. Freshmen used to be put in sky halls on south but now it is a dorm for transfer students. You will be placed for sure on main campus but randomly assigned (Unless you choose a learning community), which will give you some sort of power as to where you want to be put. For example, Shaw houses the debate learning community (at least it did when I was enrolling). Purposely choosing the debate learning community can give you the opportunity to be put in Shaw if that’s where you want to be placed.

SU overall has been a love/hate relationship so far. I’d rather not get into details or I could be writing forever.

CMIRA003,

As long as everything is covered by either out of pocket and/or financial aid, room and board will be covered. Have fun at the meet and greet!

EAR 117 (oceanography), AST 101 and 104 (astronomy) (to name a few). But remember sciences are an acquired taste.

Hello,
I got into the architecture program at syracuse, and i was really excited. but due to family issues and a bit of senior-itis, my grades suffered. I now have a D in both physics B and calculus BC. I will probably be able to get these up to Cs by the end of the quarter and the semester grade might be better.
My main question is, will these changes cause my admissions to be revoked? does Syracuse have a history of evoking people’s admissions?

Thanks,
ATS175

Sweet, I’ve got AST 101 in my shopping cart right now. Good to see it’s an easy choice. Thanks.

how hard is the dual program between whitman/newhouse?

ATS175,

Keep your grades up. I honestly couldn’t tell you because I don’t see the whole package but I would say from this point on, work hard and if the University does question why you’re slipping, be prepared to give a legitimate reason.

cuse21,

depends on the majors you choose in both schools. It is, though, more work since you’re a dual between both schools as opposed to just enrolling and picking up majors in them. The dual basically makes you fulfill the core requirements for both schools.

Thanks for your answer.
For the things you hate, are they small-ish things like the food or the weather? Or bigger things like the teachers and students?

I’ve talked to another current student, but he received a really good scholarship, so I don’t know if that makes him feel obligated to say nice things about Syracuse.

Thanks again.

How popular are sororities and fraternities at SU? If I choose not to be a part of Greek life, how much will that affect my social life?

so if I enrolled in Whitman I can also major within Newhouse? And if so may I use all the assets Newhouse has to offer (i.e. internships)?

Hello to all.
We attended the Admitted Scholars Invitation at one of our hotels here in Puerto Rico. we were suprized to hear that 258 students applied for Syracuse. A very large amount of applications. We saw around 100 +. They showed us “movie” that they put together regarding being accepted and going to Syracuse. It was ok. My D is really happy that Syracuse accepted her and the programs they offer even abroad.

One thing about the conference, they did’nt show us how the first day may be, how to do the “Move In”.

The spoke about the MSP that will be taken place in April, my daughter will be on her “spring break” and I am going over $ to see if I can send her there for those 3 days.

If all goes well, I am planning to let her set-up on August. It will be really a “family vacation” cause my sister, nephew (10) and son (autistic) will be traveling with her to let her start her new college life.

Hello!

Syracuse is my top choice school but the fiancial aid was not stellar, I got better offers from comparable schools. I have called the financial aid office and asked for a reevaluation of my aid becuase, as it stands, I cannot financially attend. Does Syracuse renegotiate financial aid packages ever?

Where do the kids from Syracuse go snowboarding? Is there a ski/snowboard club that arranges trips?

Sorry for the late replies everyone. 17 credits is no walk in the park.

Lakemom,

There actually is a ski team that arranges trips to alpines (I think) and goes snowboarding. My roommate last year went almost every weekend.

http://students.syr.edu/skirace/home.html

namesake92,

I think it comes down to you trying to ask for a renegotiation. I’ve head they have done it for some students so you might as well give it a shot too.

mango92,

The vast majority of students on campus are not greek (though it may seem otherwise). Your social life would also not be impacted if you do not go greek. There is the bar scene, the house party scene, and social life that revolves around extra-curricular activities. Although you will be more than fine, I wouldnt be so quick to pre-determine that you will absolutely not go greek.

steelersfansam,

I would say the weather leaves much to desired for most people here on campus, including myself. But I think it’s more so little annoying things that I dislike with the University such as the housing process, which contains so many rules. And the order in which students get to choose classes. Other than that, the reasons I love SU could go on forever.

@House of Guru: Just curious about the options on the Admission Acceptance Form. What’s the difference between “I do not plan to enroll” and “I would like to defer my enrollment”? What happens if I defer my enrollment? Is it kinda like a “hmm…I’m not sure” option?
