Your SU Guru | Ask Me Anything

@House of London: I’m sorry, my bad. I spelled your name incorrectly XD. Got it mixed up with the guru title you gave yourself XD.

Kendezi,

Defering enrollment just means that you wish to start your undergraduate studies at a later date. Some students usually defer enrollment either because they would like to do some community service work for a year, go on active duty, or work for that year they deferred enrollment. You will still have your spot in the University but would just start at a later date. It doesn’t even have to be a year. It could just be a semester.

@House of London: Thanks man. I got it.

can I take classes in Newhouse or major there if I go to Whitman?

Also is there a way I could request to be part of the dual program even though I didnt apply for it?

cuse21,

Yes you can take classes in a college outside of your home college or double major if you met the GPA criteria for it.

And yes you can request to dual even if you didnt indicate it coming in

nice thanks @house of london
so do I have to request the dual before august? or can I do it once Im there?

You can do it once you’re there. You apply through a formal application process. I would start by taking the class for that major first in the semester before you officially dual and if you like it by second semester freshman year you can declare it officially.

I was accepted to VPA for communications and rhetorical studies but I plan to transfer because Newhouse is my dream school. I know that Newhouse accepts transfers solely based on gpa your freshman year and I think part of sophomore year?

What classes are considered easy so I can maintain a high gpa freshman year and also knockout some of classes I have to take in the CAS to knockout my core requirement?
Will I be able to take COM 107 my freshman year?
What is the typical freshman schedule for VPA students with my major?
Are there any classes you recommend taking for students intending to transfer to Newhouse?
And when is the earliest time I can apply for a transfer and when do I began my studies at Newhouse?
Can you describe what your financial aid package was like? I’m curious because frankly mine sucked and I tried to appeal but they wouldn’t let me. Like how much are you taking out in loans and what not?

Yeah sorry for asking so many questions! I tried googling some of them but I kept getting mixed answers which just made me more confused.

Whats the “deal” with the honors program? Should I have heard by now if I were selected for it? And I heard that you can apply for it if not selected, is this true?

pixipixiepixie,

Im not too familiar with VPA courses but I know you can take COM 107 freshman year since you need it for admission into Newhouse.

Kcombs,

Contact the honors office as I am not sure about that either.

Hi, House of London.
I’m a newly admitted student of FILM program in VPA. I’ve noticed that there is another TV-Radio-Film program in Newhouse, and I wonder if you know what’s the difference between them. I just have a guess that the former one is more related to television production while the VPA one concerns about the film itself and art. Is that so? Also, how does the SU’s film program rank against others in nation, besides those professional schools like UCLA TFT, NYU Tisch, USC SCA and FSU? From the previous posts, I’ve seen that you may not so familiar with programs in VPA, yet have you ever heard of any comments on this film program??
Thank you.

House of London,
is it tough to double major between different schools? when i talked to an admissions counselor at my interview, he seemed to think it might involve spending 5 years at cuse or a couple of summers. i’m thinking of double majoring in painting and political science or international relations and i will be coming in with massive amounts of AP/previous college credits which should fill most of my freshman level polysci kind of classes in addition to many general requirements. also, given that i was admitted to the VPA for painting, will it be tough to ultimately declare a second major which is in CAS? will i have to actually apply to CAS for that?

BillysDad2014,
Thanks for the info. Did you mean that there are currently 90 Civil Engineering students in the freshman class or were 90 students accepted into next years freshman class?

My son just submitted his acceptance this evening! He visited the college and engineering program a few summers ago and loved it. He’s going to go back and visit again soon.

My D has been accepted to Whitman. Do you know how their Learning Community is or should she not request it?

Also she may be interested in the Marching Band. We understand that Band Camp begins one week prior to when classes start, is there extra housing/meal fees involved if she decides to join?

@cuse21, @houseoflondon I believe many, if not all Newhouse courses are restricted to Newhouse majors only, from what I remember reading in the PDF course schedule this year.

@kcombs I went in as a regular student and was asked whether or not I wanted to join the honors program. You can apply for it even if they don’t contact you.

I know the music program at SU is classically based, but what about clubs and activities for a son who plays guitar (electric and accoustic).

Are there clubs outside of the official orchestras and bands at school - groups of kids who get together and play contemporary or rock music either informally or as part of an organized group? He has always been passionate about music, and he’s been in rock bands and jazz bands and also done digital music.

We can’t seem to find info about this on the SU Website. Is there a list of clubs somewhere, or do you know of activities where someone like him could get involved and hang out and jam and perform with like-minded musicians?

How is the weather at Syracuse? I am preparing my daughter to go to participate to the MSP in a few weeks and would like to know what to pack, if there is any need for some warm clothes?

I am an '84 grad, and my son attends. Lots of snow and cold. Check out this site

Thanks for the 411.

BillysDad2014, love the website. Twins are from San Francisco and wear flip flops year round. I’m guessing this will be a problem in the winter? Ha!

They are determined to accept to Syracuse and I’m holding my breath as I will probably be easily dumping at least $2,500 in winter gear.
