Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

Nobody I know received decisions today, I suppose the next round is 12/6

Anyone know when the Lower stat decisions start to come out?

i don’t think, osu release decisions by stats, last year , my 2 friend’s son and daughter accepted honor and full scholarship with 4.75 wighted gpa and 35 act and similar, but they both got admitted on last wave(end of Jan), both schools don’t have ranking system and in ohio state, applied around end of Sep, so I believe they just check randomly, and someone said ranking is required so they have to calculate ranking with gpa makes delay for no ranking system school.

How would they calculate ranking if the high school doesn’t rank?

Received letter from Fisher about being a direct admit today.

My son has yet to hear but four of his classmates have gotten accepted and their school does not rank. Take that for what it’s worth, kids! Hang in there !

Anybody know when next wave of decisions comes out?

My S20’s HS does not rank either, and he was accepted in first wave. High stats kid, engineering. In state. Applied October 28. One other high stats friend heard second round (non engineering). Other high stats friend (engineering) no word yet. Stats, rigor and ECs almost identical. Who knows how they approach this!

They don’t- only 41% of enrolled freshman submitted class rank last year. https://oaa.osu.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/irp/cds/columbus/IRP_CDS_2018-2019_Columbus.pdf

Not specifically OSU, but I’ve heard a couple of things.
(1) Some schools that “don’t rank” actually do send a rank to colleges, they just don’t report ranking to parents/students,
(2) Some schools that don’t rank do provide a breakdown of percentiles, so something like… 10% of students have GPA of 3.9+, 20% 3.75+…that sort of thing. (obviously I made those numbers up, its just an example). So, if your GPA is 3.8, they know roughly where you rank.

Ah, ok. The reason I asked was that someone previously in this thread said that perhaps some applications take longer because Ohio State has to calculate their rank. But then I looked at previous years’ comments, and it seems like rank is only important for certain scholarships but not for admissions. Thoughts?

Are the decisions based on when you applied? I submitted my application on September 24th and haven’t heard back yet and there are people who applied the day before the early action deadline who have heard already.

Hi all! I’m a first year at Ohio State and I am also a recipient of the Morrill Scholarship! I’m not quite sure how college confidential works, but I’m happy to help answer any questions I can. With that being said, I am not an admissions counselor and wouldn’t be able to tell you your chances of getting in at the university. As a reminder for the Morrill applicants and those of you who have issues with the scholarship program, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion does not read the MSP essays until after you have been admitted to the university, so applying to MSP doesn’t automatically guarantee your acceptance. The admissions office reviews all applications holistically and doesn’t just look for a specific ACT, SAT, or GPA. You are all talented students who will succeed no matter where you go! Don’t hesitate to ask me questions (however this website works)!

Don’t believe it is based on when you apply, my son applied August 2nd and still nothing,

Hi everyone! I recently heard back from OSU and thought I might share my stats as a reference for other people waiting on a decision.

For reference, I applied on Nov. 1 (the EA deadline) and heard back on November 22 that I was officially admitted to The Ohio State University!

I was very surprised by the fast turn around. While several of my classmates and I have heard back, I know several friends who are still waiting on their decisions, despite applying before I did. I’m not entirely sure why I heard back so soon.

My stats are as follows:
Unweighted GPA : 3.84
Weighted GPA : 4.6
SAT : 1390
Rank : School doesn’t rank
Race & Gender : White female
Major : Undecided/Exploring

I also have what I would call fairly strong extracurriculars, leadership roles, and volunteer experience. (Captain of 2 varsity sports; Track & Field state finalist; Irish step dancer of 12 years; President of Debate & Mock Trial; 400+ volunteer hours; counselor at police sponsored leadership development program for local youth; intern at US Nuclear Regulatory Commission & Walter Reed Military Hospital; plus a few other activities)

I also applied to the Honors Program, the Morrill Scholars Program, and the Eminence Scholars Program. I am still waiting for news on all three of these programs.

I wish everyone luck as decisions roll in! I hope this is helpful!

People are always trying to make some sense out of the order of decisions. Is it by stats? by major? by application date? by state? by school? by last name? In reality, there is no rhyme or reason.

I imagine each AO has their own system for reviewing applications. With multiple AOs reviewing apps, any pattern in one AO’s process is offset by the 5 other AOs in the office, each with different patterns. So decisions just come out seemingly random. That is totally just speculation on my part, though.

But generally, for any theory, there’s a counter-example to disprove it.

The 12/2 admissions report is out, and it shows that there were NO additional admits last week. No surprise, since it was a holiday week. But also disproves the theory that there are decisions released during the OSU v. Xichigan game. Doesn’t look like that happened last year (11/24) or this year (11/30).

date of report. 2019. 2020
11/18/19. 5,225. 5,441
11/25/19. 5,231. 7,503
12/2/19. 5,236. 7,503

Also, want to remind people that there are A LOT more acceptances coming. I would bet there’s another 5,000 coming this month alone. Last year, OSU admitted over 25,000 students in total throughout the entire admissions cycle.

@momzilla2D I wasn’t really speculating about admissions per se, just curious about the idea that a school would try to estimate class rank if it wasn’t provided (since someone had suggested it earlier in this thread).

@rbc2018 Oh, huh, I don’t know why I tagged you. lol. My mistake.

One reason why OSU calculates a rank where schools don’t provide one is b/c for some programs - like Fisher - rank is one of the stats they use to determine if you will be a direct admit or not…
