Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

We just received the snail mail letter about National Buckeye yesterday, so hopefully many more letters are on their way for others.

@TheFrenchChef We are also waiting for Ohio State and Michigan. Son accepted to UMass Amherst, Penn State, and CU Boulder (All for Engineering). They all seem to send Scholarship information at random times based on the school. Son got $25,000 at CU boulder over 4 years (or $6,250) per year. Was notified by email and letter in mail. It something but not a lot for what they charge for OOS at CU Boulder. Still it helps put it in play for decision with his other accepted colleges. to date. Oh, and we are NOT need based.

@Chazer congrats! Your son must be high stats - we are expecting nothing from Boulder :frowning:

@furbina1 Not that this will make you feel better, but I will tell you from my own experience that the time a student was accepted has nothing to do with scholarships.
My son was accepted first round a few years ago and more than qualified for Buckeye and did not receive a dime. Ultimately, my son decided to go to a school that showed him some love.

That happened with my D19 last year, but it was still within budget for us, so she ended up at Ohio State anyway. I never called, and still wish I had. I’m glad you called. Did they give you any hope that more money may become available, as some decline?

Hoping for this too. Fingers crossed.

Momzilla2D They mentioned nothing about something coming our way in the future. I explained that I had reserved Buckeyebound and that I was about to purchase plane tickets, but that it wouldn’t make sense to come to the event if we didn’t hear about scholarships beforehand. The rep said he would investigate and get back to me. The next day he said that everything had been awarded that was available even though my son qualified for the scholarship. I’m glad I found out before we made the $3500 investment of bringing our whole family to the event.

Yeah, unfortunately OSU’s merit scholarships are not guaranteed, like they are at some other schools. The criteria on the website are just to be considered for the scholarships. Sorry it didn’t work out for your son.

D20 received a notification via phone call of Morrill distinction scholarship today so they are still coming in hang in there.

@momzilla2D we sent an impassioned letter listing the six scholarships our daughter received from other schools as well as the two that are less expensive than OSU. While the admissions counselor was sympathetic they said all money had been handed out so there is no appeal process. That said D20 loves OSU Fisher and John Glenn college and so will be attending. Would have been nice to get merit aid but luckily not the determining factor.

Well, that makes me feel better about not calling last year for D19. Ironically, D20 did get the National Buckeye this year, but I will be shocked if she chooses OSU. There are a couple of schools higher on her list, and still waiting to hear from her #1 school. But you never know.

D19 loves it there, though. Ohio State was definitely the right choice for her.

eta: Glad to hear your daughter will be choosing OSU. I’m sure she’ll love it.

I called today asking for the scholarship and told me the same thing that all scholarships have been awarded, except he might still be considered for the Morrill Scholarships. What surprises me is that their early action process is pretty random (that is what I was told), they do not review applications in any particular order. My son applied in mid October but he recieved his decision on the last day (Jan 31). By then I had already heard of others getting scholarships as soon as they were accepted, some as early as October. So in the random process if your application was reviewed late then you are at a disadvantage. Oh well, this is not in our control and if he gets no scholarship at all then OSU will move down the list

I think the U. Maryland process is much better. They had a set date for EA notification and a set date for scholarship notification and so every application gets reviewed for scholarship and not a random process

When I went through this a few years ago, I inquired about scholarships becoming available as students declined their admissions offer. Two of my son’s friends both had little interest in OSU, and as luck would have it, they received the Buckeye, and my son did not. Admissions told us that they give out more merit money than they have with the knowledge that people will not enroll. That means, scholarships from students who do not accept admissions are not redistributed.

@FRDad I’ve been following these college boards for a few years now, and based on my own experience and everything I’ve read, the only thing I’m sure about is that there is no science to this process. When my son applied, his application was in by October 1st, he heard in the first wave, he was more than qualified for the Buckeye between his 93 GPA and 32 ACT, yet he did not receive money. There is simply not enough money for everyone, and it appears the EA wave you are accepted in has no impact.

I know this process is chock full of stress, doesn’t always make sense, and at times can be disappointing, but everyone will end up where they are supposed to be. I wish everyone the best of luck!

All thanks for all of the back and forth on these boards. We did a Buckeye Bound day on 2/29 and a Maryland visit 3/6. These were the two schools that had both an Accounting major and Public Policy minor with great internship and learning opportunities near government. The joy on her face after the OSU visit and the lack of enthusiasm yesterday sealed the deal. On the drive home she went online and accepted her offer to OSU! Going to have a Buckeye in the house! Good luck to everyone still deciding, I hope you have the same clarity my daughter realized.

Congratulations @smgins ! That’s a great feeling. We had the same experience last year with D19, but between Clemson and Ohio State. Decision was made as we were driving away from Clemson.

Only one student was accepted last week. It starts to look like whoever is still in deferred/evaluation status will soon to see their status change to waitlisted/denied. Good luck!

My son applied EA to OSU in mid October. He was accepted on 1/31. He has a 3.75 GPA and a 29 ACT. He is in the top 18% of his grade. There are 817 kids in his grade. He was accepted to Fisher. Yesterday we found out that he didn’t receive any merit scholarships or special scholarship that he applied for. I am so disappointed. We live OOS and I can’t afford the university at the current price.

Next expected release of decisions?
