Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

Son accepted today:

Out of State and was deferred EA- was accepted at several other Big 10 schools in the fall
His Big sister is a sophomore at OSU
Was his dream to attend since he was a little guy
30 ACT
3.9 GPA

Daughter loves OSU and so have we- she is a student in Fisher College is Business

Not sure, but looking at their data, it looks like yield was down slightly last year. From around 34-35% in recent years to <33% last year. Not sure if that’s enough to move the dial, though.

I think the internationals will be a question not just for OSU but everyone else and perhaps they want to make sure they can cover. The current emergency also adds an extra layer of uncertainty. Even some potential students might choose to stay closer to home as well.

I’m an African American male, my mother is an alumni and donates monthly to the University, not sure if that played a role. I’m apart of national honor society I’m captain of the track and cross country team. I’m in band and NJROTC. Strong essay m, and my gpa is now a 3.7 after I was deferred! Good luck to you!

That’s impressive @cowboylover49 I never had any family members that went there but my physics teacher is an alumni and she wrote me a recommendation letter there so I’m curious if that might help at all.

ACCEPTED - OOS EA daughter Aviation Engr’g with Pro Flight

3.7unw/3.97w
29 ACT
Deferred end of Jan

TOSU was By far her 1st choice school for many, many months. With every 2nd and last Friday each month having to check decision status and being disappointed, I watched her get worn down & disillusioned with tOSU admissions process. THE only university that she applied to that frustrated the hell out of us, TBH. Not sure it will be tOSU or Auburn now.

I wish everyone the best of luck and know you will be wherever you were meant to be in the end! Keep an open mind. Your might be destined for your ultimate dream school and not even know it now!

Son ACCEPTED 03/13/2020
Engineering (Aerospace)
4.2 GPA
1250 SAT
Deferred in January

Also accepted to CU Boulder, Penn State, UMass Amherst, Still awaiting on U of M.

I got accepted on Friday, but I applied for the Morrill scholarship and honors college. When will I hear about those?

@cowboylover49 You’ll hear back from the morrill scholarship program by the end of March and hear back from honors by mid-April.

Thank you so much!

@Whats4dinnerMom My D20 was accepted, but we haven’t been able to visit, so not sure what she will decide. We are in California and she has a couple of UC acceptances as well as a few other OOS schools. I just wanted to let you know that my son graduated from Auburn with a Professional Flight Management degree in 2018. The program has moved out of the business college since he attended, but he absolutely loved Auburn. He was also in marching band and concert band. Auburn prepared him well. He started flight instructing after completing a 30 day CFII program after graduation. He is currently finishing training with Envoy, a subsidiary of American, who fly American Eagle routes. If your daughter has any questions about Auburn, I’m sure he’d be happy to answer them.

“acceptance increase is mostly due to domestic students” → And I believe most likely they were OOS. I didn’t see any In-state acceptance in Feb & March (still this is sampling though). Does any In-state accepted recently? Kind of expected since they had enough acceptance in Feb. already. What kind of policy OSU has? Compared to U. of Maryland, Texas Austin, Wisconsin. LOL. So many OH students have to go OOS college since OSU likes OOS students. LOL.

These 2 charts show IS/OOS for past years…

http://oesar.osu.edu/pdf/admissions/USANFYSmap_web.pdf

Fall 2019, OOS was around 33% (1st yr, FT, Columbus campus).
My D19 is OOS. And to be fair, we hear the same complaints about our state flagship, UMass Amherst. (D19 was also admitted to UMassA, but chose to go to OSU.) According to UMassA, OOS and Int’l brings in $$, which helps support IS.

@YS1111

Not true… OSU is viewed as the top public school, but the state of OHIO has excellent In-State options in Miami, Cincy, Ohio, Kent etc. The concern that I have would be how long will these events last before we all get back to normality What if many many more end up committing to the school?

I think you are out of point or I didn’t say clearly. Anyway, I didn’t mean last year or old history but just for now (likely since Feb.). Why couldn’t see any in-state acceptances in last Friday’s wave and the big wave in February (if I remember correctly). Is it just coincidence because all waiting in-state students have low stats than accepted OOS’s? Or only OOS posted here if sampling is matter?

@ys1111. Keep in mind that College Confidential is a small percentage of the reality of college admissions. Nobody here knows if the majority of the acceptances since February have been OOS students. I would think that OSU wants to make sure it keeps within the integrity or within the type/profile of students they would normally admit in order for those students to be successful at the school.

Also, room and board is a major source of revenue for the University. The fact that they will be issuing a prorated refund will be somewhat of a hit to the school. The summer schedule could also be in play which as of now is still an unknown.

As we get into the eleventh hour of the college process, the majority of the people have pretty much committed to a school or have narrowed it down to a few. Financials are probably the deal-breaker. I am assuming that OSU and many other schools are digging deep into the deferred/waitlists.

Most of the OOS statistics here are freshmen admits. OSU accepts a lot of in-state upperclassmen transfers from the OSU branch campuses and other state universities. The influx of in-state upperclassmen reduces the percentage of OOS students in the overall student body. It is important for state flagships to have OOS students for publicity and reknown outside the state as well as bringing in the all-important OOS tuition dollars (even with some OOS merit scholarship discounting for a fraction of OOS enrollees). The presence of OOS students is a big reason why the in-state tuition rate to OSU is so dirt cheap (for a flagship).

has anyone received the housing contract yet?

All of those who were accepted this month, did you find out your acceptance through mail? Also, I applied EA and was deferred end of January. Still waiting to hear…
