Class of 2024 Admissions Decisions

@KJJ2020 they said mid-May which isn’t bad at all considering other colleges usually set July as their date. Even if accepted I’m not sure i’ll take the offer.

Portal just updated. I

If your GPA is 3.5 weighted then it’s probably not hit the mark to get merit I think the lowest award said 4.0 GPA

This is why this whole process is puzzling. You get into VT my son get WL and my son gets into USC and you get waitlisted. Good luck to you hope it works out and if you go to VT you have a great school waiting

@user9167391 - I agree- Mid-May isn’t bad. And they’ve been running early on their deadlines, so hopefully you find out sooner. But I get it. Sometimes you just need to push forward on those for the sake of finalizing the process. Daughter got waitlisted at Clemson and she’s crossed it off her list for that reason- plus the realization that there wouldn’t be any merit on top of it. VT is such a fantastic school so you can’t go wrong with that one either. Please keep us posted!

Daughter accepted tonight into her second choice major - sports management. Was hoping for Darla Moore/marketing but was told it was
“ at capacity “. Need to figure out if it’s realistic to transfer into the business school after freshman year. No guarantee which makes for a harder decision! 1230 SAT - 4.3 weighted GPA.
OOS CT.

Daughter wait listed! Any advice or strategy on how to get off this list would be greatly appreciated. SC was her #1 choice but I’m thinking her chances are really close to zero now with SC boasting they had record applications.

Looks like UDEL or JMU is in our future!

I do have to say, the Admission process at SC was truly a ”cart before the horse” experience compared to other colleges… ( Hey kids! We issued you our VIP ID’s, your USC ID’s, this gains you access to our Onecarolina portal that will actually show you our SC semester class scheduling) Um? About that? Sorry! No! ?

@NJOOSNOSIDAM - I’m definitely no expert on this topic since my daughter is my oldest. But our family approach for everything is typically that it’s better to reach out and go for something rather than wait. So when she got deferred from USC in December, she sent a note to her Admissions Rep and AO and gave them an update on her internship/any helpful updates since her application, and told them that USC was still her first choice and why she’d make a strong addition to the class of 2024. Not sure if that helped at all, but we figured if she wasn’t going to get in, she didn’t want to look back and wonder if she should’ve advocated for herself. Some schools care more about that “expressing continued interest” than others do- but i can’t imagine that it’d hurt anything to try! I really hope it works out for your daughter. The process is so tough :frowning:

My D did exactly the same. Sent her admission person a nice email with similar sentiments as your D. - we don’t know if that helped get her in (just heard good news tonight) but like you, didn’t want any regrets and figured it would only hurt our D if she didn’t try.

Great advice! @KJJ2020 @NJOOSNOSIDAM

@NJOOSNOSIDAM … I was waitlisted at a school that doesn’t consider demonstrated interest. I sent them a long email about how my grades have been improving even more senior year and what I am up to in my free time, as well as let them know the school was and still remains my top choice. They told me they do consider demonstrated interest for the waitlist, so I would recommend writing something like that to admissions— it can’t hurt.

My daughter sent similar emails to the rep (and we travelled great distances to meet w the rep twice - and she knew we travelled far). But it still wasn’t enough to get her anything more than a waitlist after initial deferral.

On the other hand it’s interesting to see that a poster above was not accepted as a marketing major as its fully booked but was offered sport management as an alternative. So sport management is not fully booked. Maybe a glimmer of hope to make it thru the waitlist.

Does anyone have experience or feedback on switching majors in your sophomore year? My daughter was accepted last night into her second choice major which is sports management. Her first choice was the Darla Moore Business School for Marketing. In her letter of acceptance, it did say that marketing was at “full capacity”. So I now have a few questions.

    • There is no guarantee she will be able to transfer in the business school in her sophomore year. The website says its grade dependent AND only if there is space.
  1. For those students who have been accepted into the marketing program but haven't committed to the school, (or will decide to go elsewhere), doesn't that create space for those incoming freshmen who are hoping for their first choice major?
  2. Could there still be a possibility that her portal could change/update at a later date and she could be moved into the marketing program once the school starts to get a good feel on how many are going to commit or decline?

We are so afraid to roll the dice. It’s a big $$ ticket for OOS with no guarantee of getting into your major.

Should we call the admissions office directly? Just looking for any opinions/thoughts and feedback. Thank you.

I agree with you about it being a roll of the dice. I don’t like how many colleges today make students decide on a major before they start their first year. Many kids know what they want to do, but many do not.
I advised my son to declare “undecided” in most of his applications. He knows he might change his mind once he gets to college and that’s okay. I teach college and I see this all the time. Students’ world views and eyes are open in this new college setting and they’re growing intellectually in tremendous ways.
I’m eager to see the responses to your question as I, too, have this question.

@Jlh0204 the same exact thing happened to my daughter! With same major choices as well, she has decided to try it out and go with that everything happens for a reason!

@Jlh0204 Definitely good idea to call admissions with your questions or email your admissions rep for your state.

@Jlh0204 My son got into business and i had asked about major changing etc. and my regional AO told me that once you move out of business to something else it is very hard to get back in if you wanted to. So my son will be starting with business and if its not what he wants he will transfer to another major 2nd year.
It would be rolling the dice for her because there may be spots open after all is said and done in May but I am sure no guarantee.

That being said we did go to the Sports management session at ASD and they do have alot of business related classes some of which are even taken through Darla Moore so your daughter would be able to take those businesses classes there.
What other schools is she considering. I guess you have to weigh all that with cost

@jgwolf -she is also considering Arizona State University as well as the University of Tennessee where she did get into the Marketing/Business Schools.

@Jlh0204 My son got into Tenn. as well and he considered it as their Business school is good. I think he just liked SC better

@jgwolf - It’s nice to know that some of the classes in the sports management major do take classes at the business school.
My other question is if my daughter were to go into the sports management program as a freshman with the hopes of transferring into the business school sophomore year, do those students have an advantage of getting in over an incoming freshman? Are current students given a priority for switching over someone just coming in?

@Jlh0204 My daughter got into UofSC in 2018. I’ve learned a lot about their process since that time. Here’s what I know about transferring majors. She was a Chemistry major when she applied, but at the 2-day orientation process, she had the choice to change her major if she wanted to, so she changed it to Biochemistry. It was a simple process, just letting the advisor at orientation know that she wanted to change. She mentioned that her friends also changed their majors at that time. So, that’s one possibly route. I’m by the date of your daughter’s orientation, there could be some spots that are open, and just make sure your daughter makes that request at that time. In fact, if I remember correctly, there’s a sheet of paper for your daughter to fill out before orientation, and that letter might have the request to change major on it too. I don’t if they changed that this year, but that’s how it worked out in 2018. Good luck.

@Jlh0204 I was told something similar as @DDclass2018 by my regional AO concerning changing before orientation. I would just be careful as there may be limits on certain changes into more competitive majors .It could be easier to change within the same college ie. sciences, within business or like my son from business to something outside of business. It could be harder to change to business .you should contact your regional admissions person They could probably give you more guidance
