Class of 2024 Admissions Decisions

So my D’s final two are LSU and Univ of South Carolina.

Both are so similar in what they offer, size, etc. - we are OOS and haven’t heard about $ from either yet.

Anyone have any feedback on something that sets LSU over USC?

  • Or USC over LSU.

She is going for Athletic Training

I think LSU may give better amount for lower stats. I know someone who said they wouldn’t get any money from USC yet they got 15k from LSU.

Her stats are decent for LSU (1210 SAT/3.8 GPA). Not super great for USC.

Money will def be a decision factor.

@Lacole03 Not sure what his GPA is probably over 4.0 but his ACT was 28 and he told me because of that he was not going to get any money from USC. Unfortunately i think your daughters SAT are too low for merit as if you look on line their minimum is around 1300 or so and you have to be close in both test and GPA- its not one or the other.

@jgwolf
I agree with you. And sticker price without any $$ at all from either school still has LSU abit less expensive.

Just got my scholarship. $22,000 over four years.

D20 just got Capstone notification and scholarship amount. For those waiting, they came in a portal update and e-mail.

Does anyone know what GPA and ACT qualify your student for In State tuition?

So, I guess I’m confused. My OOS daughter received an Academic Scholar Merit Award even though her SAT, ACT, and GPA all exceeded the 2020 average scores for each of those categories for the next higher award, the Distinction Award. How does that happen?

My son said he did receive merit tonight. Same as somebody posted above of $22K over four years. Makes USC a much better option for us OOS.

4,35 and 31 ACT

DS got Honors college and excellence award in state and 500 per year. His stats are 1420 SAT and 4.68 GPA. I think this is the lowest award that does instate. The next one down is half of out of state.

My D20 also got Academic Scholar - Superlative Award (In-state tuition + $500) which is lowest award with instate tuition. She is OOS, SAT - 1430, GPA 4.2, lots of ECs and leadership although I don’t know that these are considered for scholarships.

My S got the Superlative at in state plus $500. 34 ACT, 4.0 UW at a HS that does not offer AP/IB. S is feeling a bit slighted, honestly.

We received the $22K over 4 years last night. Glad that they did provide something but it didn’t match what we received from UTK. I had a discussion with my D about where we stand and at this point we look to be heavily leaning towards UTK.

OSS received Capstone invitation yesterday and the Merit award matches what was in the original admissions letter.

***DS did not apply for Honors College or any other department scholarships.

@ShrimpBurrito I know how you feel. Same with us. 35 ACT and at a school with limited APs. Highest possible gpa is 4.3. I wonder if they recalculate. Awesome job to your son for maintaining a 4.0.

My son got Capstone and the Academic Scholar - Distinction Award, which comes to about $15,500 per year. We are OOS and he was accepted to our flagship school - Univ. of MD. He was admitted to Electrical Engineering at USC with 1440 SAT & I have no idea how they calculated his unweighted GPA. He goes to a very competitive prep school and has a 3.78 weighted with 90% honors and AP’s so stripping the weighting probably really hurt him re: merit. We can’t justify USC because in state at MD is $23k and its a higher ranked school. And he really likes MD so that helps.

Just wonder why you feel slighted. This is a great scholarship. What was your sons weighted GPA. The only difference would have been 1500 more per year. I know that can be alot but instate tuition is great 25K is alot better than 45K anyway you look at it
