Well… it would’ve almost been better if he’d gotten less merit aid. It’s still $10k/yr more than our in-state option (Va Tech) - which makes it low enough that it’s doable, but still makes me question whether it’s worth it.
We’ll be heading to admitted students days at both in the next few weeks to see where S25 is leaning.
Not sure how Clemson decides merit. Seems like previous years it was based on GPA and test scores. Maybe it changed it this year. That school school in the middle of the state ended up being 2/3 the cost of our in-state option (MA) and the honors college seems great.
I feel like test scores might be the difference since between levels (at least 7500 and 10K). My kid seemed to be right on the edge and was given 7500. They also have Clemson HC, so we’re still trying to decide. Cost is now equal to Penn State Honors, more that UGA and less than Michigan. So many factors to consider…
My guy got the $10k and didn’t get in to the honors college (he’s waitlisted). My guess would be that the $$ is more straight line based on test scores or numbers (he had a 35 ACT, 4.0 unweighted GPA) and the HC admittance was more “holistic” and based on the essays (and his didn’t ring the bell).
Mine also does not have honors college at Clemson. I similarly would guess that test scores were very important. Which makes it all the stranger that they can’t provide these merit numbers earlier in the process.
Yes, Clemson bases merit on test scores. In the past, the thresholds/levels have been posted on various threads. I’m pretty sure that the lowest threshold was 1400 for the SAT (ACT equivalent 32??) as of 2 years ago. I inquired because my current Clemson S23 had a 1360 and did not receive merit scholarship. My current S25 with a 1440 did receive merit scholarship, so that threshold still seems fairly accurate. It might vary somewhat dependent on the data distribution any given year
yes, it may need to be north now, or some combination of standardized test and GPA??
this was posted 2 cycles ago, but was referring to several cycles before that. So clearly, the thresholds have increased, but it at least gives some idea of the parameters (test/GPA) being looked at. The hyperlink is a table of merit levels
The info in the portal with the merit amount said that need based aid announcements would be out later. (I can’t remember exact wording, but I don’t think it was TOO far into the future.)
In case it is helpful: oos, 4.4 GPA, 10 APS, 1 Dual Enrollment, 35 ACT, Presidential Service Award, great EC: $10k per year Merit Scholarship.
Anyone have first hand experience with the business school? Daughter accepted here, IU Kelley Honors, UMD Smith Honors, UWisconsin (pre-business, not direct admit), University of Florida, Uconn and Villanova Business. Still waiting to hear from a couple of schools but based on rankings alone for where she was accepted leaning towards IU Kelley. Appreciate any insight anyone can share on their experience with Clemson business program.
mjcacmom has a daughter in the business school (junior, I believe) who did the CUBS (business LLC). Good things to say about it, but I’d recommend you locate her posts and reply or DM directly. My son is in the college of sciences- so all I can say is that the business school complex is new/nice and the program is fairly reputable. My S25 is also looking at business/finance at Clemson vs in-state options
My daughter is a senior finance major/math minor at the business school and is very involved with her advisors, professors, and other students (she will be taking her 4th actuary exam after graduation and start working at Aon in July, loved her internship last summer). She’s really enjoyed her classes (will graduate with 150 instead of 120). Of course she loves everything Clemson and has taken advantage of the whole experience. The business school got a great brand new building when she started. I’d be happy to forward any questions.
Trying to gauge how much more Clemson will cost vs. her other main choice. We’re guessing $50 to $60K more. (I estimated $48K yesterday, but that’s based on this year’s numbers.)
I’m just biding my time until my husband and daughter reach the inevitable conclusion.
