Cornell Waitlist Class of 2028

If it does come through, it should be tomorrow. Based on a prior post, someone was off the waitlist last Thu @ 2 PM ET… yesterday was a holiday, so tomorrow may be a logical guess… I may be wrong
It’s also a function of how many were sent the final waitlist form with the essay prompt and how many responded… more importantly, need vs how many were offered and how many accepted… so too many unknowns at this point… just my 2 cents waiting in patience

Huh, so last week was just 20 COE waitlist offers? That is a rather small bucket.

Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately that is the case and as all 1400 kids initially responded it sorta seems like the 20 they offered admission to would be interested in accepting offers …. but perhaps a few got a better financial aid offer elsewhere. Hard to say but it was rather disappointing news.

Just for this:

Hello Maya,

Thank you for your email and your continued interest in Cornell Engineering. Our intention is to close the waitlist on, or before, July 1. However, at this time, our waitlist does remain active and will until we determine there are no additional spaces in the class to offer. At that time, we will send final decisions to those who remain on the waitlist.

I understand this has been a long process and appreciate your patience as it continues to unfold.

All the best,

Amanda

guess its over smh

Why wouldn’t they just share that news with everyone, did you specifically email them? I hope you don’t mind as I am going to email them as well with your email. I mean 1400 and only 20 offers kids need to move on why even make them wait until July?

Don’t understand if they know they only have 20 spots why they would make 1400 write an essay wouldn’t you think they would go from the top grades or the overall application that was originally submitted?

I am a parent of a kid on the waitlist and a Cornell Alum. My husband was on the faculty there some years ago in a different college. I contacted the office of admissions in COE and Scott Campbell - who is the director of admissions kindly responded. Why would you think I would post inaccurate information? I know it’s hard to accept the news as the chances are greatly reduced for every applicant now but it may be time to think about this differently.

Also I do mind that you contact with the excerpt I shared as I specifically said I was reluctant to share that with the public.

I wish all of you the best in your future endeavors but I will not longer participate in the chat room.

I think its because they only wanted to conduct the supplemental submission once and they didn’t want to limit their options. Could they have pick 100 real candidates, yes- but that means making a pecking order upfront. By offering to all on the list, the process self selects a bit and it allows the school to have depth of choices to fill those remaining few slots. 1400 responses was probably higher than they anticipated. Yes, the whole thing is a big tease, but it is what it is. Waitlist is really just a nice form of soft rejection for the vast majority.

It would be a hurt to see you leave the chat room. I think it is important we value the information provided by contributors. Everyone here is either a student or a parent waiting in patience, and hope for them/their child to get off the waitlist. It is not easy bearing the offer rate is 1-2%. Not everyone has the advantage of reliable information and at this time, we are piecing information to decide on our own - to wait or to give up

It’s late June. How many spots did you think there would be left?

You are right and I reread what you wrote and would not share what you posted, I also did not say you posted inaccurate information anywhere.

Maybe a bit more than 20 especially they went to their waitlist later. It’s all good my son is going to an Ivy either way.

I think the poster was responding more to the 1400 who were asked to write essays, not that there were 20 spots . Asking over 1000 kids to write ANOTHER essay when you know you only have about 20 spots demonstrates a level of disrespect towards students that is not in line with the values Cornell espouses to hold. If the COE admissions team doesn’t have enough information to determine who to pull off their waitlist from the current applications already submitted, then they are incredibly inept at their job.

Rude or incompetent: both are bad looks for this particular school, and I’m sorry for all the students who wrote an additional essay when there was a 1% chance of getting pulled off the waitlist.

While I don’t disagree with you, this is how waitlists work at many elite schools. Lots of kids are falling over themselves sending in multiple updates, more than one LOCI, etc. An extra essay can level the playing field if the prompt is the same for everyone.

Agree. They also announced take less ED after the ED deadline, pretty rude.

cornell coe closed the waitlist ggs

No, most elite schools do not require an additional essay AFTER the LOCI. No other college at Cornell requires this. As for leveling the playing field, that happened with the actual application. Everyone had the same essay prompts and requirements. My kid did not apply to COE, so I have no dog in this fight. I just feel bad for the kids who took time to write yet another essay when there was a 99% chance of it not making a lick of a difference.
