EA decisions UGA class of 2024

Good news for those of us wondering about OOS merit scholarships, specifically the Presidential, which waives OOS tuition. This is from UGA AO David Graves, on his admissions blog:

“The Presidential Scholarships are based on a number of factors, with activities and leadership being among those factors. As such, we need more time in order to review files for this scholarship, and no Presidential Scholarships have been awarded yet. Due to our limited timeline, our focus up to now has been to review files for EA admission and to get those decisions out. I do not have a timeline for the Presidential Scholarships either, sorry.”

Not sure if anyone has said this or not yet – we did a campus tour last Friday, and the admissions rep said that the Deferrals during early action are often just because they couldn’t get through all of the applications. So for those worried or confused by a deferral, that could be why!

This is how they manage enrollment. The first gage of interest will come from those who got accepted and pay the housing deposit which started on Monday. An enrollment deposit is not required. But will the housing deposit will be used to gage “interest” as a way of seeing the “maybes” They will also get a lot of enrollment deposits between now and say February when they start to release the RD decisions. They will get another spike. Then they will slowly start to release those students who have been deferred and they can do in waves between March and April This is probably the way they can manage the admissions model. By no means, what I am saying is for those who got deferred to lose hope over acceptance. Lots and lots of deferred kids will get in. But the waiting is frustrating.

Twin sons applied, and we got the outcomes we predicted…

Twin 12:30 a.m.:

Accepted/Denied/Deferred: Accepted with Honors
State of residency : GA
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
UGA GPA: 4.2
SAT: 1550 (790 Verbal/760 Math)
AP/IB classes and scores: 14 counting senior year (including STEM stuff like mechanical Physics and Calculus)
Leadership roles, notable ECs: Lots of stuff, including state champ in TSA and band leadership

Twin 1:00 a.m.:

Accepted/Denied/Deferred: Deferred
State of residency : GA
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
UGA GPA: 3.9
SAT: 1380 (730 Verbal/650 Math, I think)
AP/IB classes and scores: 12 counting senior year (but no AP Physics or Calculus)
Leadership roles, notable ECs: Basically a carbon copy of his twin brother’s resume

Feel good about twin #2 getting in regular decision, although not 100% sure. EA doesn’t take measurements for the things he is best at (everyone loves him and he’ll make a hell of a leader some day).

Twin #1 has other options he is still exploring, but this is a strong contender. I think if his brother and all their main friends can go to UGa together as roommates, that’s likely the deciding factor. I think really challenging himself at the best school he can get into is also calling to him as well, though.

My sophomore son at Univ of Tennessee is more like twin #2. I have no doubt that he will do great in life because he does very well socially. We just have to get him through college! It’s not always about numbers. My daughter is more like Twin A. She was accepted EA to UGA. My son would not have gotten in. Tennessee is a great fit for my son.

Accepted/Denied/Deferred: Accepted, but not auto accepted into Honors Program
State of residency : Georgia
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: White
UW GPA: 3.975
UGA GPA: 4.2 - 4.3 - they were unclear if they were counting AP Research for UGA GPA
SAT: 1490 - English 90 points higher than math, so also NMS semifinalist
ACT:
ACT English and Math:
AP/IB classes and scores: AP Human, World, Lang, Research, Environmental Science - all 5’s, 6 more AP classes in progress, but 2 are 1/2 year so a total of 10 APs at graduation
Leadership roles, notable ECs: founder and president of service club (has over 600 hours of service), ranked in top 5 in state for debate, 2 year debate team captain, recognized in national writing contest, GA GHP
Work experience: Spanish Tutor

As her E.C.'s are likely more impressive than her composite SAT, we are really hoping for honors college acceptance with the application. Hard, as our daughter is not well rounded, and UGA tends to place a bit more emphasis on those composite test scores for honors program than some other schools do. We will be waiting until April to see how things pan out. UGA Honors program would be perfect for her, but not so sure about UGA without that program as she thrives in small, interactive classes. Wish we could be more excited about her acceptance as I know many others would be thrilled just to be in.

Agree with #Tech88. Most of the “What??? Scratching our head…” deferrals we know of seem to have handed in their application at the last minute.

Middling. According to UGA admissions, because not every EA decision was based on a holistic review of the file, they have not given out any scholarships which are based on any component other than just GPA and test scores. Not sure on the timing of the Ramsey, but the final interviews are in February, so I'd assume they must contact those invited by sometime in late January. My understanding is that they continue giving out scholarships all the way until April. For example, my older student received a UGA scholarship offer, but wound up going elsewhere due to her interests (wanted a hospital on campus) - we assume when she contacted them with a final decision, that scholarship was given out to another deserving student. Of course my younger student, who has UGA much higher ranked than her older sister, did not wind up in the same situation as her older sister at the end of EA round...so we are also hoping better offers and scholarships come through as holistic reviews are completed. Good luck!

@OldTimer1234 It would be so great if Universities reallocated scholarship funds as students decline admission. I did ask that question to one admissions rep (from another college) who said that school did not reissue money. Fingers crossed for everyone applying!

@H0llyw00d My guess would be that if a student declines a Fellowship or Ramsey scholarship, those are not reissued, as it’s a weekend long interview process that they do not repeat it again. However, my oldest received a Charter Scholarship ($2,000, I think) along with her EA decision 2 years ago. The following week, she was accepted somewhere ED and therefore declined UGA’s offer. I always assumed the $2,000 was thrown back into the “pot” and later distributed to another student in the RD round, or a student who gained entry into the honors program with an application. I do not know for sure though. FYI, we asked this question at a private university recently and they sometimes give out scholarships AFTER a student has accepted, so they do not need to “reissue” them. Weird policy in my opinion, because unless you are doing a binding decision, you’d want to have all the financial facts while making the decision. IF my youngest gets in there without a scholarship and want to go over UGA (right now if she can get into Honors, UGA is her first choice), she will reluctantly be making a phone call to that school to let them know of other offers and see if they can throw any aid her way. We do know of one student from GA who had a Zell Scholarship to go to UGA and only received a partial scholarship to UNC. She wanted to go to UNC really badly, and her parents told her she had to attend UGA due to finances. She called UNC and they matched the offer she had in GA. It probably doesn’t happen often, but if your student wouldn’t be able to attend otherwise, it’s worth it for the student to at least try to make a phone call. GOOD LUCK!!!

Colleges base scholarship offers knowing that some will decline, therefore the money doesn’t go back into the pot. They get into trouble when more students than expected accept. See Temple for example. As another example, UGA had too many accept the Fellowship last year so I expect there will be fewer offers made this year. Just like with admissions, colleges calculate expected yield on scholarship offers. That isn’t to say that exceptions aren’t made. They most definitely are, but as a general rule, when one student declines, the money isn’t awarded to someone else; they already factored that into the number of scholarship offers made.

That’s good to know @tech88. My daughter met with her counselor this week and her scores and extracurriculars appear to be much higher than two of her classmates that got accepted. Here’s hoping they just hadn’t gotten to hers yet. She loves Georgia and it is her first choice. The waiting is just gonna be hard. Does anyone know if any decisions come out prior to that March/April timeframe?

@ATX2024 you mentioned scores being higher. How were her grades compared to the 2 others that got in. Georgia puts a premium on grades more than they do for test scores. They mentioned that on their web site. They say they would rather take a student with 3 years of excellent grades over a student with a high ACT or SAT I’m curious if your child had better grades as well ?

We really are in the same boat! Our daughter also got accepted without honors and I know it was her test scores. Her GPA is pretty much exactly the same as your daughters and even the AP’s are very similar. She took the ACT and got a 34 but her strength is English as well and her Math score is just too low with a 30 :frowning:
She is going to apply for honors college but with her Math ACT it likely won’t happen. Unfortunately, since UGA is really high on her list and it stinks that Math will ruin it for her. She is not even bad in Math, just not fast enough to finish all the questions in time. Plus, she wants to go into Journalism and not into STEM. Good luck to your daughter!

My child was also last minute, she always is and was not deferred.
