@jhmoney Actually, her gpa is higher than theirs, a 4.0 unweighted, 102.2 weighted and scores are probably about the same or just slightly higher. Her counselor was dumbfounded. Maybe those accepted somehow had a higher UGA average. I’m not sure I understand how that works. One of them has a sophomore attending already; so, maybe that had an impact. She just heard from Texas A&M and is in the Honors program at Oklahoma State; so, we’ll be educated (ha ha), but Georgia is definitely one of her favorites.
Who knows? I’m just hoping she can get in with regular decision.
@ATX2024 ah ok… good luck… not sure how Georgia made the decisions… my daughter has a 4.24 Georgia GPA and a 1300 SAT and was accepted… her unweighted is a 3.96gpa . i believe it was her grades, course rigor, class ranking 14/565 and her EC’s if they looked at those as part of the decision? good luck and I’m sure with those stats perfect 4.0 she will get in… doesn’t make sense to me that she was deferred!
Does anyone have experience with the Honors college career placement, including internships in the financial sectors and/or consulting (not accounting/auditing)? My son is torn between UGA Honors and W&L, which has an incredible job placement record.

UGA sends a lot of students into Consultancy firms. My h works for one of the big 4 and comes across Georgia grads a lot.
The bigger question is fit. W & L and UGA are very different schools. Has your son spent an overnight on each campus? My d turned down The Johnson for the fellowship at UGA. Message me if you would like to chat more.
Agree with Sally22 that your son should spend time on the campuses that son is in final considerations on in the end (W&L and UGA and anyone else) - and find which one fits him best. They are very different and each will have their pluses and minuses for him. Don’t think he could make a bad choice with those two as they both are solid offerings. We have son at W&L. He had gotten accepted in previous year in UGA honors but chose W&L over a couple of other schools also. He is happy with his choice as our we.
@Sally22 Turning down the Johnson for UGA . . . Wow! I get they are totally different schools but given the acceptance rate at both they are so different! What a tremendous honor!
@itsgettingreal17 It depends on the university and the specific scholarship. Wake Forest specifically said they have certain scholarships that are funded from a Family Foundation or other sources where they MUST award all the money each year. Thus, if one student turns it down, it goes to another student. However, they are also the ones who said that they sometimes award these types of scholarships AFTER students accept (to avoid the hassle of getting declined and having to offer the scholarship more than once.) LOL, of course that school has one of the highest tuitions in the U.S., so it would be nice to know your offers BEFORE committing - no idea what their thought process is on that one!
@UpstateSCmom “My child was also last minute, she always is and was not deferred.”
Is it possible your daughter was one of the 1/4 of top academic students who were admitted to UGA EA without a holistic read of her application? Did her stats exceed the average admitted student? On the UGA admission’s blog they said many of those who were deferred they just did not have time to do a holistic read. FYI, when my oldest applied to UGA two years ago, the entire EA round was only based on GPA, class rigor, and SAT/ACT scores; this holistic read in EA round is still very new to this university. They originally said ALL applications for EA would be given a holistic read, but then on their admission’s blog admitted that those who were in the top 1/4 academically were admitted without further review of the application, those who were low academically were just denied - they only did holistic reads in EA round for those students in the middle. It seems to be many of those students in the “middle” who turned in their applications late who were deferred. Also, maybe it made a difference if the student was OOS - I’m assuming from your name you are in SC and all the students we know who were deferred with last minute applications and stats that seem like they should have been admitted are GA residents. Another reason for deferrals seems to be if the high school uses a particularly unusual grading system and UGA had some trouble converting the grades to their “UGA GPA” format. Seems like they often set those aside to deal with after EA round was over.
Also, good luck to your daughter in the Honors Program admission’s process. My daughter also wants to go for either Communications/PR or Journalism. She went with the SAT because there is more time per math problem. We know someone who got into Honors last year with a 1460 SAT and really good extracurriculars, also much higher English than Math. Since UGA does NOT require a math course there - it’s a math OR science for many non math related majors (with several schools designated for non-math-heavy science classes - like agriculture, forest management, etc.) we are trying to hold out some hope in the holistic process for Honors Program. GOOD LUCK!!!

How likely is it that a deferred EA student will hear in February if the only reason they were deferred is that admissions didn’t have time to look at their app?
The first admission wave after December was in very early February last year. These were very high stats regular decision kids who were admitted and also a small handful of deferred early action kids. I know a couple of EA kids admitted in early February who submitted very high rigor 4.0s for their fall senior year grades. The speculation is that make a difference for them. If last year is any indication, decisions will continue to roll out in batches until the March deadline.
So my son that got in early action honors has decided to pull the trigger and is going to accept UGa. Now we wait for his EA deferred twin brother to find out, although he has already gotten in somewhere else on Honors so it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t get in at UGa (but UGa is his first choice by far). We’ve almost wrapped this process up, thankfully. Good luck to everyone!
@TwinsDad2024 Congrats on being done, at least for one of them. That’s gotta be tough, with twins applying to overlapping colleges.
My S (accepted EA) is not close to a decision yet. It is down to three schools, but we are waiting to see how merit offers shake out. We are hoping he’ll get something from UGA. He was auto admit to Honors and still no word on merit.
