EA decisions UGA class of 2024

I get it on the financial aid stuff being a big factor in people’s choices. I just sold my company in the last year, so there is no way my kids will get any help other than merit (and that’s fine, let those who need help get it). Zell Miller is a big bonus, of course, and a big part of why I decided to stay in Georgia before they started high school (might have moved back to Virginia otherwise).

Has anyone who is majoring in Psychology toured and met with folks from the Psychology department? We’re planning a tour, but nothing specific to the area my D21 wants to major. Any recommendations? Or is a general tour ok?

Anyone know what percentage of EA deferred students eventually get accepted under regular decision?

On UGA Admissions blog it says small wave of acceptances coming out this afternoon. Mostly strong RD applicants who would have been accepted if had applied during EA round. Anyway someone just started a thread for RD applicants to post their stats:

February 14th admits and statistics (Class of 2024)
Started by VirginiaBelle
February 13
University of Georgia

Just in case anyone deferred from EA wants to start following that one. Or is there already a thread for RD UGA?

Also his blog states that the final wave for RD will be released on Fri March 13th.

Do you know the thread name? Can’t find it

Pretty sure this is the actual thread name
“February 14th admits and statistics (Class of 2024)”

Also many of you probably already read Dr. Graves’ Admissions blog, but if not…check it out. Has tons of info and is extremely helpful!

Hey did this happen to anyone else? My dd was admitted EA and applied to Honors by the deadline; up until yesterday (when they happened to release the Feb admits), her applicant portal showed her Honors Application as submitted; but now the Honors app is not even showing up on the applicant portal - it’s like it disappeared. If this just means they pulled all the Honors apps out and are reviewing them, that would be fine - but worried it means it’s gone somehow?

@H0llyw00d This is just my personal opinion, so I hope I don’t get a lot of grief on here about expressing it. As great at the UGA admission’s blog is (in my opinion AMAZING), the actual tour at UGA was the worst - by far - of any university we visited with my two students. First of all, unlike most of the other universities we visited, they do not attempt to divide students who are visiting by interest, deviate the tours by interests of the students, or allow students to pick their tour guide by what they were majoring in (at least that was our experience.) Additionally, most of the tour your family will be sitting on a bus and they point out the buildings going by, give you information about UGA traditions, etc. They failed to explain how to use the bus app to get back to any parts of campus you wanted to see in more detail unless you specifically ask about this. The walking part of the tour focuses on Central campus, is extremely general, and does not take you into a dorm. You basically see the student union, the library, the football stadium, they took us into one classroom. It’s not that the actual tour guides were bad or weren’t friendly and the information session was on par with other universities we visited, but the tour itself is the most limited one we experienced. We actually came back on a separate day to meet with a student who attends UGA, saw his dorm, and walked the majority of campus by foot, he showed us how to use the bus app, we went into Athens, etc. If you really want to get a better feeling for the psychology department and see the buildings where your specific student would spend time, talk to psychology students, etc. I’d recommend you trying to set that up in advance or planning a bunch of additional time on top of the regular tour provided by the university. Lots of stuff UGA does very well, but they don’t seem to spend as much time and effort on marketing their school with the tour as many other universities do. I guess they get plenty of applications without needing to.

@OldTimer1234 Thank you for your feedback, and I agree with you. We toured UGA a couple of weeks ago, and between my older child and my D21, we’ve visited about ten universities. I was so excited about seeing UGA, as my son decided not to visit during his journey. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable overall, but it was his very first tour. In addition to the things you mentioned above, I had questions about campus safety when I noticed there were no Blue Lights on campus. They were taken down after too many students pushed the button as a prank, and if my daughter was walking home from the library late at night, and felt unsafe, she could request a police escort. I found that to be a bizarre answer.

UGA has A LOT going for it, so if my daughter is lucky enough to get in, we will go back for another visit to dig deeper into our unanswered questions.

@OldTimer1234 I wonder if you toured UGA during finals season? My S has toured UGA twice, and both times toured a dorm. Most (all?) colleges are more restrictive with admissions tours during finals so as not to disrupt the students. We didn’t get to see a dorm on our Rice tour a couple of years ago. It was August and I forget why, but there was a specific reason. So maybe you just hit UGA on the wrong day.

Bama also does the bus tour. I don’t really like it, either. It’s gotta be hard to give a good overview with such a massive campus, though.

In general, we try to schedule two full days to explore a college. Especially large universities with massive campuses. There’s just too much ground to cover in a 2 hour window.

@ShrimpBurrito We toured Feb 21st and did not see a dorm on the tours. Many schools have model dorms set up to give people an idea of the layout. UGA’s Visitor Center was the most impressive I’ve seen, so I did expect to see a model dorm. There aren’t any people from where we live who currently attend UGA, so there wasn’t an existing student to tap into for that tour.

I do agree about needing way more than a 2 hours window to explore any campus. We typically spend an extra two hours at each university to see students, visit any buildings we are allowed entry, etc.

I can’t speak to the general tour, but at least some of the individual colleges do a separate tour for interested students. My DD is a Terry ambassador and gives tours of the business school to small groups or individual students. They offer them every day. I’m not sure how you sign up though whether on the website or by calling.

The Terry tour is great. It really clinched it in my twins’ minds that they wanted to do UGa and Terry.

@oldtymer1234 I am sorry to hear about your disappointing tour of UGA. I toured UGA 3 years ago when my D18 was looking at UGA. I also toured it this past Fall with my S20. Both tours were the same and pretty much as you all describe it. We did not see the dorms on either one of the tours or at least that was no part of it. Keep in mind this is a very large university and 1.5 hours is not enough to see the whole school including the area of interest. Always allow a full day if not two days (if coming from a faraway place) in order to get a real feel for the campus and the general town. Try to include a sporting event or a play if at all possible. For sure venture out into the town and even get a meal at the school cafeteria. The majority of these large schools will not include a tour of any department unless you book it separately.

When I went to see Indiana U, I had a general tour and then I had to book a separate tour of the Business School. It worked out the same way at Ohio State and I am about to see Florida in the next couple of weeks and it is also 1.5-hour tour, but I am planning to spend the night in order to really get a feel for the school and the area

I can see how disappointing the tour can lead to a negative impression of the school. But not many get a negative vibe out of UGA. The school has a lot going for them.
