Did Melissandre have that little girl (can’t remember her name) burned so she could have her life force to keep living?
I wonder about Melissandre. She looked so despondent when she took that necklace off. Can she put it back on? Will it still work or is the glamour gone for good?
Also, it was still daylight when she crawled into bed and Davos will surely be knocking on her door any minute. He won’t be offering mutton!
I thought that Stannis had Shireen burned alive so that his army would prevail – which they didn’t. Melissandre may have suggested the sacrifice, but it was Stannis’s choice so that he could defeat the Boltons.
Maybe Melisandre influenced Stannis to murder his daughter so horribly in front of everyone to take him off the table and clear the way for the REAL heir: Jon Snow.
We do not know whether she revived him, the camera cut away. We also don’t know whether his spirit jumped into Ghost.
They seem to have dropped the whole plot about the young man being raised by Rhaegar’s friend on the houseboat, last seen in the books landing in Dorne, IIRC.
I’m pretty convinced that Melisandre believed what she saw in the flames and is now questioning her faith – not the power of it, but maybe the “rightness” of it.
It would make sense for Jon’s spirit to warg into Ghost.
I’m not sure where the books are going with the Young Griff/Prince Aegon storyline, but yes the show doesn’t include him at all. It seems like with the events in Dorne on the last show, there’s not much reason to spend significant time on the show with the characters left in Dorne.
I have read the books twice (on tape) and have watched the series as well. Episode 1 was a great Meh. Way too many open parts of the plot are begging to be closed, and supposedly HBO is only planning two more seasons including this one. Not see how.
Speaking of Jordan, yea, he passed on right before the final book and his widow worked with Brandon Sanderson and Jordan’s notes so that the final book could be finished. It also had to wrap up many plots and eventually did just that but not in a great (IMHO) way. Let’s hope GoT does not do the same.
I read that GRRM was trying and planning to get the next book out before this season started so he didn’t commit to write any episodes for HBO because that would take up too much time. Well, he missed his deadline. It would be nice to get the book before next year!
YESSSS!
Things are finally happening. I felt like there wasn’t much going on last week.
I felt sorry for Hodor having to lug Bran around now that the actor playing him weighs about 50 pounds more than he did a couple of seasons ago
Great episode, and looking forward to the next one.
Loved seeing young Ned, Benjen, Lyanna, and young Hodor. Preview had part of the Tower of Joy flashback!
Did Arya actually pass the “no one” test?
In the books, there was no explanation of how Balon fell from the bridge, and some indication that it was a faceless man, who could have been hired by Euron. I guess that would have been complicated to explain.
Why didn’t Roose Bolton see that coming?
Best line: “That’s what I do. I drink and I know things.” Interesting (and happy) that the dragons didn’t BBQ Tyrion.
And finally: Yay!!!
I agree with the Best Line! Second best lines - “I don’t tell dwarf jokes”, “but you THINK them”.
I remember Balon falling from the bridge having something to do with Melissandre roasting slugs full of “king’s blood” on the fire to kill all the false kings = Rob, Balon, etc.
I liked this episode too. Sansa’s concern for her sister. Ramsey being extra evil (awful but in character), the YAY that you could see coming. Tormund Giantsbane returning to Castle Black. Tyron - being excellent and possibly also part Targaryen which the books hint at. I loved when he told his story to the two dragons and they apparently listened. Jaquen Hagar and his wonderful face…

“I prefer being an only child.” Yikes.
I think the actor that plays Ramsey is absolutely excellent. He conveys so much just in his expressions and mannerisms alone. The epitome of evil…
and yes…Yea!
Finally caught up, and now participating in real time watching. yay!
We don’t yet know how Jon will be “back”. (Pet Sematary back? “Every time I am resurrected I lose a part of myself” back? )
I read a fan theory that the three heads of the dragon are Daeny, Jon and Tyrion. That all have Targaryen blood. The dragons reaction to Tyrion may be a clue.
Interesting.
I’m glad for the Yay moment but it was a bit anticlimactic. I thought it would tie into his warg-ness somehow or happen while he was on the pyre.
With the 3 leeches, there was another explanation besides magic of how the usurper kings died. Robb at the Red Wedding, Balon Greyjoy by falling (Euron), and Joffrey by poison. (Renly died by magic, but he didn’t get a leech.) It makes me wonder if there is another explanation for Jon’s resurrection besides Melisandre’s religion, like warging out of Ghost.
I also thought it would happen on the pyre as with Daenerys, but that would be too much of a duplication, perhaps. And Mirri Maz Duur was sacrificed on that pyre, so perhaps blood magic (not just burning hair) is required for that method.
I think the 3 heads of the dragon theory is a bit more supported in the book than in the show, because Tyrion has pale hair and two different eye colors, but that theory for Tyrion is certainly supported by his not being BBQed by the dragons and them seeming to understand him.
Tyrion would only have been an appetizer for the dragons. Hardly worth firing up the grill.
But there’s another fan theory that Varys also has Targaryen blood. In fact, he may have the characteristic Targaryen silver-blond hair, which he conceals by shaving his head. (Eunuchs don’t go bald.)
So you have four candidates, maybe.
