How to convince my mom?

^^^ the extremely ironic thing about this situation is that your mother is a total Hotchkiss mom not a Lawrenceville mom. Lawrenceville allows such a greater degree of independence than Hotchkiss, and your mother sounds like a very determined hands-on sort.

@mhmm

What do you mean by a ‘Hotchkiss mom’?

Right now I just need to find a way to convince her that i’m not gonna get kidnapped, get into a car crash, break my leg, miss my flight etc. at my four years of boarding school…

I’d suggest calling or emailing Hotchkiss and asking about what assistance they provide students in getting to and from the airport at breaks. This is an easy question for them to answer.

This has been asked and answered. Hotchkiss provides a bus to the main airports for$30 or $35 depending on which airpot. It leaves usually around noon when the break starts and goes to the airport. there is no other assistance. kids are supposed to be responsible to get off the bus and make their flight. The timing often doesn’t match though as there is only one school arranged bus and your flight may be earlier or later. Some kids arrange their own rides (expensive cabs, go to NYC for a night, etc). Everyone arranges their own flights.

you have more chances of doing this at a school like Lawrenceville that has a larger day population and a larger population of kids regularly going to NYC on weekends than at Hotchkiss where you will pretty much stay on campus.
So as a " Lawrenceville mom" your mom will have to give you MUCH more independence and freedom of movement on weekends, and wont know where you are at times. As a “Hotchkiss mom” your mom will be assured that on most weekends you’re safely tucked into your own bed at the school.

meh. there is a main road that runs through Hotchkiss so more likely for car crashes at Hotchkiss. Also, there is more snow and ice in Lakeville so more chances to slip and fall and break a leg! Lawrenceville is a self-contained campus so you will be safer. Also, Hotchkiss is an open campus in the woods and hills, I don’t know if wildlife prowls through the campus at night!

Unless you have somehow been to both schools don’t guess about weekends. Lots of Hotchkiss kids go to NYC on weekends too. There are more kids from NYC than anywhere else. Esepcially since it gets old to be in the middle of nowhere every weekend and go to Millerton NY where there is one movie house and the bus times don’t work to see a movie usually. Most of the kids live only a few hours away so many go home or have parents coming up every weekend. Same at Choate by the way.

…and there’s a cemetery at Hotchkiss…GHOSTS!

Just kidding!

It really seems like your mom just loves you bunches and is really sad about you leaving. I can understand why she would want you closer to your aunt, especially if it is her sister. I would have a really hard time letting my children go around the world at 14and honestly, it would make me feel better to know that there was someone who loved them as only a relative can nearby. Try to be sympathetic towards what she’s going through. Tell her that you love her for being so concerned about you but that really, you’ll be fine at Hotchkiss too.

But don’t keep your CC friends hanging. Please let us know which school when the enrollment contract gets mailed in! :)

@vivsters, not sure why you feel so difficult to convince your mom. Simply let her know that there is a ghetto near Lawrenceville ,and you are so excited being able to do some research on teen gang culture.

not funny hoo too.

seriously people who don’t know a school should stop bashing it.

and the word ghetto is not exactly a nice one, nor is it applicable to lawrenceville nj which has spectacularly big huge houses and estates. now it might be more applicable to other schools oft discussed on this board, but not L-ville.

@hootoo: ROFL!

No thanks. My tip may very well work, as long as you don’t tell your mom someone on CC made it up.

Actually a quick Wikipedia search for Trenton, NJ pretty much covers the same material. As it turns out, Trenton is only about 2 miles further from Lville than is Princeton. Yikes!

@vivsters,

There was a snowstorm once and I was forced to leave on an earlier flight home or not at all. Throughout the entire process, everyone was more than accommodating in making sure that I got home safely: my dean excused me from the last few classes, and since I no longer had a shuttle, the director of transportation during breaks PERSONALLY DROVE me in his car to the airport, etc. All of the prep schools are fully prepared for any situations that might arise and will not just leave you out on your own.

Fyre, that was Choate right?

You won’t get that personal service everywhere, as airports are much further (ie Hotchkiss). L-ville and Choate are right near I-95 thus also making them more accessible and the roads plowed and cleared. Schools in the country do not have that same luxury though they do an excellent job of clearing roads in Mass/Ct

Trenton is the capital of NJ. Lawrenceville is a historic town. NJ Governor’s mansion is within walking distance of Lawrenceville. NJ has real beaches as opposed the so called “beaches” in CT. CT doesn’t have a “Statue of Liberty.” To top it Red is way cooler than Blue. :smiley: :D

“In 2005, there were 31 homicides in Trenton, the largest number in a single year in the city’s history, with 22 of the homicides believed to be gang related.[37] The city was named the 4th “Most Dangerous” in 2005 out of 129 cities with a population of 75,000 to 99,999 ranked nationwide.[38] In the 2006 survey, Trenton was ranked as the 14th most dangerous “city” overall out of 371 cities included nationwide in the 13th annual Morgan Quitno survey, and was again named as the fourth most dangerous “city” of 126 cities in the 75,000–99,999 population range.[39]”

Many historians mark the '68 riots as the last time Trenton was a commercial and residential hub. Historian Charles Webster puts it simply: “The riots that killed Trenton.”

The New Jersey State Prison (formerly Trenton State Prison), which has two maximum security units, is located in Trenton. The prison houses some of the state’s most dangerous individuals, which included New Jersey’s Death Row population until the state banned capital punishment in 2007.

Sorry for I have to move you forward in time, this is 2011. Well, people in some states live in the past. Google some nice towns in CT like Danbury, Hartford.

I had to skip the 2010 Wikipedia references because they were so unsavory, sorry! Chris Christie does seem to be helping, but there’s no doubt Trenton is a blighted area. Lville is, in fact, equidistant from Trenton and Princeton, so if you tout one you have to claim the other. I actually have no horse in this race, but many NYers have a dim view of Trenton without having actually read up on the topic. Sadly, research seems to confirm the bias. Alas!

Meanwhile…it’s not NYC, but at least it’s safe. ;)
