Is the game over for MD School, 2015

" I think schools may require up to $100 to hold a seat but AAMC recommends if they withdraw by April 30 deposit should be refundable."

$100? Try $2,000 non-refundable deposit! Inflation hits! That is what Touro COM is asking. We told her go ahead to put it down any way, consider the $300K COA, that is a small price to pay.

^ Yikes, that made me gasp! $2,000 non refundable? That is rediculous!

AND the deposit is in two weeks, they won’t even take a personal check or credit card. MO, Cashier’s check or wire transfers ONLY… What, do you think I am an scam artist writing bad checks all over?

Wow- that’s incredible-- is it refundable at all? The 2K is quite a deposit. D was lucky that her school didn’t require a deposit. But, like you, we would have paid it if they required it-- they have you and they know it. Congrats on the acceptance.

It might be because touro is an osteopathic school. Never heard of such a large deposit for an allopathic school.

Congratulations on the acceptance! As long as the deposit goes toward tuition, that would make it less painful.

2000? That is crazy. Does any of it get applied to tuition?

It’s almost unfortunate that that acceptance was an early one. Sounds like they want to “lock up” their acceptees and protect their yield.

The problem is the email that requested the deposit did not say if the deposit will be counted for future tuition, and I don’t even want to ask. We just have to view it as a contribution to the “Process”.

With no MD school IIs we have no choice but to put down the money.

I just don’t want to put down ANOTHER 2000, because she is coming to the CA campus of Touro for interview. The first request is from the NYC campus.

Also, just realized this is another reason to definitely get the MSAR when applying. It lists the amount of the deposit and whether or not it’s refundable for every school.

The MSAR would not help with D.O. schools. For those, check out their website http://www.aacom.org/

Since you are already putting down a non-refundable deposit, shouldn’t your D withdraw from all remaining D.O. schools, in order to save the $?

We prefer Touro CA over NYC because its close to home and I might have a place for her to live near by.

You don’t think she will make it to CA since she already made it to NYC?

I certainly hope she does. I am picking her up tomorrow at the airport.

Are the two schools related? Would they transfer your deposit if she gets in?

Touro CA, NYC, Middletown, NV and NY Medical College (MD) are all under one roof. I don’t know if the deposits are transferable, I hope so, but prepared for the worst.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s crazy for this applicant to not have any II’s from any MD schools? I realize that an II can still be coming. She has good stats and isn’t she a UChicago student?

Is she a senior or has she already graduated?

Yes, she is from Uchicago, she has graduated and is in a glide year. She applied over 30 schools.
I hope the MD school IIs are coming, but we have to take care of the bird in hand instead of the bunch in the bushes.

As M2ck said “It is unfortunate…”

The good thing is Touro is probably the most selective DO Schools in the bunch.

There still may be MD II coming, but the Touro acceptance is a very good alternative-- especially if she gets the CA spot closer to home. This is a very competitive cycle (maybe because of 2015 MCAT) and because of the AMCAS delays last year, many more people applied very early. Adcoms on SDN have repeated that 80% of interviews have gone out already (ugh…).

There’s a on point thread on SDN with responses from 2 adcoms
<a href=“Potential for Interviews beyond today? (Week of 11/11) | Student Doctor Network”>http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/threads/potential-for-interviews-beyond-today-week-of-11-11.1107366/

OP background: I applied to 28 schools with strong stats (3.9/36 from a top Engineering University) with cookie-cutter ECs. So far I’ve had 5 IIs (1 acceptance, YAY) and 5 rejections. The rest of my schools are mostly top 40 schools but I haven’t heard back at all from them. At this point, should I call it and not really expect any more IIs,…

Goro responded: It depends upon your numbers relative to the other applicants, and how fast the Admissions staff can make their way down the pile to yours.

LizzyM resposned: You’ve had 5 interviews and have at least one acceptance. Acknowledge that the rest are silent rejections, not because there is anything wrong with you but that the schools just don’t have the resources (space, time, faculty) to interview every well qualified applicant and they need to make hard choices. Once you’ve accepted that you are done for the quarter, you may be pleasantly surprised by a few more interviews but you’ll enjoy life more if you just accept that your cycle is over and move on.

I interpret the above posts to mean there is still hope, but with the one acceptance, why torture oneself needlessly…

“I interpret the above posts to mean there is still hope, but with the one acceptance, why torture oneself needlessly…”

Yes, we are “hoping for the best”. :)

I am just bitching about the $2,000 non-refundable “contribution”.
