The cursor still is an issue.
@CC_MacKenzie the misplaced cursor is still an issue. Not consistently but most of the time…the cursor is not aligned with the type letters I’m typing. It’s halfway down to the next row.
As you can see from this thread, this has been an issue that was supposedly being addressed for a while. I’m hoping you can get it resolved.
Hi! I’ve been on Discourse trying to see what the path to a fix might be, if there is one. As @CC_ajenkins mentioned above, it’s an ongoing issue across several sites within Discourse and beyond. I’ll post any updates as I have them - rest assured that we are still looking into the issue.
Hi all - I’ve talked to the team over at Discourse and have a slight update. They have put through patches/fixes on the Discourse side since the issue was reported. However, they have put in as many patches as they can and, unfortunately for us, they don’t feel that there is much else they can do to mitigate the issue.
They suggested trying these workarounds: either rotate the screen to get the composer to repaint, or close the keyboard and reopen. Please let me know if these don’t work to get the cursor to move back/become useable.
Are people beyond @thumper1 still noticing it happening to them? And is it happening as frequently or less than before?
Yes! Happened to me twice today on my ipad.
It happened to me today on my Mac.
Yes, and it’s frequent.
On my IPad, when this happens…I do the following:
1.Tap the keyboard symbol in the lower left of my screen
2. Then hit discard
3. But when the option then comes up…I hit cancel.
The cursor is then aligned with the text.
@CC_MacKenzie send that procedure to the folks at Discourse. You can also tell them that this was not always the case on this forum…so clearly something happened on their end, as I know no one who has this misplaced cursor anywhere else when they are typing on their devices.
What I’m saying is…this is a Discourse issue that began well after they took over this site. There is something on their end that is off.
This is not a forum user issue.
At the beginning, we users were told the problem was on our end…clear the cache, restart the device, exit out of the application, etc. NONE of those things worked. Because it was not a problem we created.
I just happened to find the above “remedy” by accident myself one day. And I need to use it often.
ETA…these things do not work. “Close the keyboard”?? How do you close your keyboard on a mobile device?
I’ve talked to the team at Discourse and they’ll be able to look into the issue starting next week. I know it’s frustrating to continue experiencing the cursor issue - unfortunately, that’s the earliest they’ll be able to dedicate time to diving into it.
Hopefully, they’ll be able to find a fix for us! Appreciate everyone’s patience on this - keep me updated if you notice any changes.
@CC_MacKenzie update. The issue is still there. No change.
Its intermittent for me. I can’t figure out what triggers it.
Hi all! The Discourse team should be looking into it this week. I’d like to clarify that it’s not a user error or bug on the Discourse side. Unfortunately, it’s an iOS issue that we have minimal control over. The Discourse team has been trying to put in fixes to cover the issue but they won’t be able to correct the bug - that would need to happen on Apple’s side.
So…they are blaming Apple for this. That’s fine…but frankly, I don’t buy it.
If this were an Apple issue, this oddly placed cursor would come up in other places. I see this only on THIS site. No where else. I use my iPad for other applications. This issue only happens on college confidential.
Perhaps others will comment on whether this is something they are seeing in places other than College Cinfidential.
Hi @thumper1. Unfortunately, there are several documented users across other sites who do also experience this issue. It’s been plaguing different sites/users since at least Fall 2025 (likely earlier). The bug seems to affects many different sites around the web, not solely CollegeConfidential or even just Discourse.
Until Apple actually solves the issue, the Discourse team is trying to find a way to help mitigate the iOS bug. For anyone experiencing the cursor issue, I would recommend also lodging a complaint with Apple support on their feedback page! Perhaps if they hear from more users about it, they’ll dedicate further resources towards fixing the root issue.
Curious if any iOS users experience this on any other sites? I don’t.
I’m also only experiencing the cursor issue on CC.
This is something you folks and Discourse should be doing. This is not a user issue. It’s likely a coding issue.
I’ve been on this site since about 2006 and this only recently began to happen. What update was done. Perhaps that is working at cross purposes with Apple. But that is your issue, not mine (as a user).
I figured out a work around which I can use (posted above).
I worry that new users (and many people use Apple products) will just turn away if this is a problem for them. It makes responding, and making corrections just about impossible…when it happens.
I’m on IOS on my iphone and my computer and literally have never seen what y’all are talking about on College Confidential or any other site. Seems like a weird one!
If you’d like to hear from more Apple users I suggest changing the subject of this thread to something like ‘Apple users, have you experienced an oddly placed cursor?’ I have seen this thread for months but never clicked on it because I wasn’t having any problems. I think inly the people like Thumper who are having issues are posting here and people like me don’t even open the thread.
