My daughter’s friend got the Buckeye scholarship $13,500. OOS, test optional, 3.7 gpa, no AP or honors courses, minimal rigor. Admitted in the first wave in December. I’m thrilled for her, but astounded! She doesn’t even want to go to OSU, but she doesn’t really have any other viable options, and the price sure is right now!
We called there (again) today and they said it’s random how they are rolling out.
Said it could go until end of March. Yikes! No AP and got the Buckeye? Good for them. I think my kid has 17 honors and AP’s with a 4.7 and we have seen zilch so far. Still keeping hope for them.
You do know that housing deposits at colleges are nonrefundable? That’s because you commit and accept admission when you do so. Some colleges allow you to choose your dorm and/or room. Some are a first come first serve where you get to pick your dorm. Some are randomly done where the date you pay your deposit doesn’t matter, and some you choose the LLC and you have no idea what dorm you’ll get (like my 3rd year daughter at another university). It was between OSU and the college my daughter is at now when she was deciding, and now OSU is one of the top 3 my son is deciding on now. Technically, the right thing to do is also let the colleges know that you’re not accepting their admission offer when your student knows. This way they can offer other students admission where they may have been waitlisted or rejected. My son has already not accepted a few of the colleges he was admitted to. I don’t hate the player or the game, i just respect what is the right thing to do.
You do know that not all schools make you put down a deposit? A big state school here does not make you put down money or commit. The earlier you apply the better lottery chance you get but you can withdraw and there is no charge. The same goes for plenty of other large colleges there are some that refund before May 1. I wouldn’t feel bad choosing another school and giving up the deposit. They know it’s going to happen when they make you sign up in February and all scholarships and financial aid aren’t even out. It’s not a loss for the college because they are keeping the deposit… which is why the push for housing so early. It’s a money maker for many I’m sure.
If your student completed and submitted the Common Application when applying to schools, they had to sign to affirm several bullet points. Their signature affirms the following:
*I affirm that I will send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to only one institution; sending multiple deposits (or equivalent) may result in the withdrawal of my admission offers from all institutions. [Note: students may send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to a second institution where they have been admitted from the waitlist, provided that they inform the first institution that they will no longer be enrolling.]
I wouldn’t do it, or put my student in jeopardy. Universities chat with one another. I’m not telling anyone what to do, just giving some friendly advice.
Which again is why osu does it poorly. Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa to name a few…you do not need to accept enrollment to put in your housing. You merely need to fill out the housing contract and put in the deposit. I’ve had his Illinois deposit in for certified private housing in since December and decisions didn’t come out until last week. Luckily he didn’t apply to Illinois on the common app so he signed no such thing.
My daughter is the same as your. Zilch so far. Tons of honors and AP and good stats. She was accepted in December. I’m nervously “trusting the process” at this point.
Yep, that’s how we feel. Lol
Got snail mail notification yesterday of Buckeye. Grateful to have gotten it but was really hoping for a Maximus as well. Daughter is OOS, 4.0 weighted, 1410 SAT, NHS, 20 AP credits (by graduation). Think we’ll have any luck with an appeal?
Out of curiosity, did your daughter go test optional? Mine did.
My daughter had similar stats OOS but with a 1510 and 44 AP credits and only got $2000 more.
Just out of curiosity, how can a HS student have 44 AP credits. Our public high school doesn’t even half close to half of that amount. That’s impressive!
Typically its the credit value for the AP course they took. So an APUSH course could be given 3-4 credits depending on the university. Also some count dual enrollment classes.
Hey, I am new to this thread, I understand that osu releases decisions in waves, so does anyone know when the next wave could be?
Yes. She went test optional. Now I wish she wouldn’t have.
Missed the key word “credit”! Regardless super impressive!
I know ! I feel like the people we know who got the awards so far submitted tests. Mine did not think their score matched the GPA or class rigor.
My son submitted scores as well. He got his merit about two weeks after his acceptance in December.
Yes, plus OSU is generous with AP credit. For instance Calc BC gives you credit or Calc 1 and 2 which are 5 credits each. That’s 10 credits for one AP test.
Has anyone’s child gotten significant Merit test optional yet?
