Sorry for those of you whose offspring are lollygagging and dillydallying. Ours did his 4 EA in plenty of time. He’s thinking about applying to a couple RD, but those are on him. We’ll punch in the credit card number of need be.
We don’t really do wrapped gifts, but we usually take a vacation that we consider our family gift to each other. This year it is skiing in Utah. S may get an extra travel gift too. He just attended Fall State in Austin for Junior State of America (for those who haven’t heard of that, it’s a non-partisan political debate club). He had such a great time that he wants to go to some winter JSA convention in Washington D.C. and we will send him if the dates don’t conflict with our long-planned ski trip.
Welcome @momofone9! And congratulations - sounds like your DD18 is a strong, confident woman ready to take off in this world.
@MPT3D I would absolutely think you can tweak anything you’ve written. DD’s Common App essay was inspired in part by an essay she had to write about something else.
DS is away at college. I insisted he call home on Sundays as he is very far from home and only came home when the campus dorms closed.
He was very good about it the first year, not so much the second year, now in the third, I usually call him!
Our senior HS daughter did not apply to any colleges that required essays that impacted admissions or aid, which is a good thing because she hates writing on command. I do have a list of scholarships she should apply to that require essays, however, and it has been a struggle to get her to produce anything.
So I have given her a couple of ideas on what would probably work for the prompts. I want them done this weekend, so it is going to require me to push it. She is the last one to go through this process, and I will be very glad to be done and just concentrate on her senior year.
Congrats on completion @Veronica02 !! Such a refief and you’re right, it is so great to see them able to relax into their senior year a bit now that this part is over.
Congrats @MACmiracle on the acceptance and scholarship invite to her #1! I hope it works out for her!
Welcome @momofone9!!
@Momma2018 and anyone else still struggling with a procrastinator, I send my warmest hugs and empathy! I was there, I can’t even believe some days we made it through to the other side, but we did! You will too. Hang in there!! >:D<
Yes @MPT3D I believe you can change the common app essay prior to submitting to other schools. My understanding is that it doesn’t change what has already been submitted to other schools however.
I don’t know how communication is going to be for us next year. Right now we text a lot, we do use snapchat, but not often, occasionally instagram. I’m guessing there will be lots of phone calls, possibly even skype. I don’t like to think about it too much because it makes me weepy :(( I’m going to miss this girl a lot and she’s going to miss us too, we’re pretty tight, and it’s likely she will be far away. :(( We have a complicating factor in that my H is considering a job opportunity that will move us across the country at the end of the school year. It will mean ALL of D’s schools will be plane rides away. I tried to convince her to apply to one closer to the new area “just in case” but she did not like any of the options. :-S
My D knows my username on here and though I’m 99% sure she never comes on, I don’t want to give away her awesome xmas gift yet
I do like the idea of luggage though, so that’s going in the mental file as a possible add-on!! I also love the lottery tickets in the stockings idea @3scoutsmom I always struggle with the stockings so I’m definitely stealing that one!!

We did the room cleaning procrastination before the November 1 deadline. Slow progress is being made on December 1 deadline too–but he tends to leave the ones he cares most about last. I don’t get it.
Welcome @momofone9!
@MPT3D, @1822mom is correct, the Common App essay can be changed even if you’ve already submitted it. The schools you’ve already sent it to get the original version and the revised version will go only the school(s) you sent it to after making the change.
My DD got a letter from WVU (West Virginia) with her scholarship offer: $15,000 a year for her GPA and SATs, plus another $5500 a year Engineering scholarship. This is getting hard to resist, lol, as WVU is very affordable to start with, even OOS.
DD is stressing because this is her first acceptance and the letter says to “Accept your scholarship!” I told her she can’t rush because she applied to other schools including UMD (Maryland), our state flagship that has been her first choice. She IS interested in WVU, but is in no way ready to make a decision.
Don’t they have time to decide after all the decisions come in? I know there is pressure for housing deposits, but I didn’t know there would be Scholarship pressure! Very exciting though!
When DS16 went off to school two falls ago, we barely heard anything from him and let him have his space, although it drove me crazy. After his first winter break, he was much better about it and still is. I try to text him a quick message each day, and he always replies back… It’s my way of knowing he’s ok

@Astro77 I found this information about accepting WVU scholarship in link above.
If you have any questions you can always follow up with the school.
@mommdc thanks so much!
I admit to feeling embarrassed that I didn’t think to look this up on their website! We weren’t clear what to do from the letter.
The information you need is not always on the website, but in this case it was.
My son also had something about accepting his scholarship in his letter (different school), but it said he just has to accept it before May 1.
It’s nice that at my D’s school scholarship and grant aid didn’t have to be accepted, just loans and work study.
@Booajo in some ways I think it’s good that your S is leaving the applications at his most desirable schools for last. II think that the kids really learn a lot about themselves during the application process with all of those soul-searching essays, and I also think the difference in maturity between the beginning of senior year and the end of the fall semester can be significant for some kids as they start mentally preparing themselves for their launch.
@melvin123 that could be very true, but will the work actually get done? It remains to be seen!
DD’18 got a letter from ASU today with a big scholarship (University President’s Scholarship). Happy Dance! That’s her in-state safety.
@glido Congratulations in the acceptance and scholarship!
@glido, that’s terrific! Congratulations!!!
@melvin123 completely agree - the evolution of my D’s essays has been pretty dramatic from the first round submitted in October, to now. They’ve improved quite a lot which is a good thing since her top schools were her last to be submitted. Some of them are barely recognizable from the first drafts this summer. Writing is such a process, I can’t even imagine being a novelist!
